glad you’re OK Rog, were you subjected to our finest West Mids HATO hospitality?
Yes, After my second 999 call as I waited about 45 mins and nowt happened so I rang again to be told that my original call had not been passed on to anyone
So about 1 hour after the incident occured a HATO van appeared and they stopped the trafic and tried to clear the stones - too late for lanes 1 & 2 as the lorries had ground them into the tarmac - resurfacing there soon me thinks.
Then a second HATO vehicle came and I recognised the guy in it as from the ‘Dead Dog Squad’ who featured on a TV prog a few years ago - It was the guy who has the ferrets that get rid of the vermine at the side of the motorway - now that leaves it open for a few comments
I’m glad you’re o.k.Rog.
I’ve just got back from France , done 1500 miles from Calais, Peripherique to Cahors and back without one sharp intake of breath or situation on the road
It doesn’t matter who’s driving what. When the roads are as crowded as ours are, then the smallest user is going to be the one that gets hurt the most when the biggest ones get out of line. If you’d have been on a bike…
It doesn’t surprise me no-one stopped …
I saw a big accident M1 southbound last year at about 3 in the morning .I was going Northbound and stopped to phone plod and offer assistance if no-one southbound stopped .No car stopped , they all picked their way around the carnage , only trucks going south stopped and helped out .The operator told me to move on now that people on the south were stopping.
Well, the delayed shock hit me last night about 10pm - was crying like a baby - took about 20 mins of cuddling from the Mrs before I came out of it.
What strange things our minds are - I had over 24 hours with no seeming obvious effect - sorting out this and that etc… then I go to bed and my mind starts replaying the incident and adds on the possible things that COULD have happened. I also found myself trying to fill in the ‘blank’ bits - like when the car was spinning but it seems that section of memory has decided to stay hidden.
Mike-C:
Ok, i’ll come clean. I was being sarcastic, as i’m sure many knew !! I think the idea that someone in lane two gets sideswiped and its their fault, whether they are advanced or not is total bollox.
I don’t agree. Tell me why you think this is instead of just writing it off as total bollox - that’s just bluster.
Mike-C:
You can leave or make space around you as much as you can, ,you can plan escape routes until they are coming out your ears. You can still be hit.
How does that work then? If you have sufficient space around you for it to be coming out of your ears what’s going to hit you.
Mike-C:
The question “what could he of done differently” still hasn’t been answered.
Just a few suggestions although I was trying to stay away from this as the question was asked of a particular person.
Don’t get into this position in the first place. Consider this the primary answer.
Try always to drive alongside a space, try never to make three abreast (unless your stuck in traffic or moving very slowly). Never accelerate into a closing space. Position yourself so you can see what’s occurring. Control the traffic around you, especially those behind using your position & speed. Ensure you have a bail-out plan. In heavy traffic consider moving to lane 1 earlier in the drive where you will have an escape route. There are loads of suggestions. How about some from you?
There are very few collisions which are complete accidents & 100% blameless. That’s why there is no such thing as an RTA anymore.
I would like to add my name to the list of members on here who have said that they are very glad that you got out of the situation without any (apparent) injuries, and sorry to hear that the car is so badly damaged. Two things spring to mind about your problems now, firstly, I am saddened to hear that no-one stopped to see if you were alright (you say you were in a line of trucks - surely one of those must have seen what happened and could have got the number of the offending truck!). Secondly it brings home the fact that you only know how good your insurance is when you need to make a claim - always make sure you have the cover you might need, cheapest is not always best. I too have found this out to my cost.
Dorry, Didn’t type what I meant, I meant you were overtaking a line of trucks. Did they all have blinkers on? Or were they too busy trying to avoid your spinning car. I still think it is a sad reflection on our society today that no-one stopped to help.

What about other traffic that moves into your space, or doesnt that happen in your perfect world?

Glad you made it OK Rog - as others have said you can replace the car.
I agree with other comments - get checked out as it can take a few days for things to show up.
Sometimes even Roadcraft can’t help, but at least your driving skill probably helped. Hope it’s all sorted and they nail the barsteward ASAP.
Been Docs - all OK
gardun - one for you to ponder as a fellow advanced driver…
I went forward, just passed the front of the artic when the traffic in lanes 2 & 3 slowed and I backed off to save tailgating the car in front. As the traffic in lane 1 did not slow this meant that the artic was, in effect, legally passing me on the nearside. On realising the danger that put me in, I was intending to increase speed to get too close to the car in front - that being the lesser of 2 evils - but I was not allowed enough time to do so. WHAT SHOULD I HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY
Rog - from your description of the scenario I can see little else that you could have done. Why was traffic slowing - was there any signage to warn of that possibility? Some people have suggested that you should not have got into the “no way out” position, but from what I can make out another vehicle would have filled the gap putting you back where you started. I much prefer the old Roadcraft which put much more emphasis on “consider use of the horn”. Probably not much use in the circumstaces but the only thing I can think of. As I said earlier - Roadcraft is not infallible, it just reduces the odds! Also, the perfect driver has not yet been born (although I’m trying to be the one!)
I can’t see anything you could have done differently appart from stay at home

Of course it does. but isn’t the whole idea of this to have the escape route for when this happens.
If you move into a space where there is potential for conflict - heavy traffic, lorry with blind spots, unknown lorry driver, potential block end, other vehicles alongside, everyone moving fast, intimate knowledge of motorway driving & alert for the possibility of heavy braking at any moment. Why would anyone want to think about going there, never mind actually going there. If something does happen, which it did, what will be the outcome? I bet ROG never gets into that situation again.
The thinking drivers/riders would not find themselves in this spot unless they had lapsed concentration or made a miscalculation.
