Butlers quarry,Maltby

Hi Gloves, having trouble sending a private message.I did see the Volvo when looking at Amberhill pics sorry I did not reply.A410 ETO belonged to Alan Gilberthorpe not sure if they had A409 ETO never seen a pics.Regards Paul.

I remember Butler’s wagons firing up late 70s when I was at MFS Maltby next door to their yard, bags of clag on a cold winter’s morning
Paul, did Kenny Barr have his own wagon do you know,I know he worked there at one time,he was a warehouse supervisor at MFS when I started in 1978.

Hi Chris,Ken was driving this when I went with him.He left before Tarmac took over in 1978 all drivers before this date were company drivers. It was bloody red hot in summer & chuffin freezing in winter.

That’s a cracking AEC Marshal Paul,I knew Ken very well as you know but I never knew he worked for Butlers never mind about driving an AEC.

Chris, after the AEC Ken drove a 6 wheeler Albion Reiver from new HWT 886J when it was off the road he drove a Foden S36 8 legger with the black top as shown in this pic.The top was painted black because of all the tar from filling up with the blackstuff.Regards Paul.

Paul, what was the history behind Amberhill? Were they a consortium that bought out Tarmac’s fleet after they decided to sell up? The livery is strikingly similar the last one used by Butlers before Tarmac took over.

Hi Bonkey,I will try to find out for you this week.Regards Paul.

Laying the blackstuff at Doncaster Racecourse using Tarmac from Butler’s own plant at Holme Hall Quarry.

Love the Holmes F7, Brings back memories.

The following pics are of the storage bins collapsing, luckily the driver escaped without any injuries.

This was taken in Mattersey sand quarry that Butlers also owned.

Preparing for blasting.

Butlers bought 3 of these second hand.

Shovels at rest after a hard day.

Before onboard weighers, internal weighbridge to check weight, before getting to the main weighbridge.Hopefully saved on shovelling.

It never seemed to be working properly whenever I used it Paul, which wasn’t often admittedly! A lot of those bridges needed regular cleaning out underneath the plate or accuracy wasn’t good, the one at Ballidon was the same. Handy when working OK though as both Holme Hall and Ballidon had a trek to the ‘proper’ weighbridge and when loading tarmac (at Ballidon) we often had to guess load it, as did the powder tankers of course.

Pete.
