Hi, !! my early days 59/60, of driving started with BRS Parcels,Managed by Mr Marriot. located in the top of Newcastle rd Basford, then later moved to top yard of the freight depot at Wheildon rd Stoke,Managed by Mr Sherrif, and I had mates driving from the Tunstall depot , all buildings are still there at both depots, but other owners now, Its Tunstall depot was next to the old Berrisfords Transport, who used to do a lot of continental work, also the Tate an Lyle sugar depot next to it, hope this is interesting to others.
Canterbury BRS depot in Wincheap is now a Quick-Fit tyre centre.
Dover’s one, in the old Priory Goods Yard became EVR Traction’s depot in the 1990s, I worked for them for a bit in 1997. It’s been empty for years and is falling slowly into disrepair/dereliction. I think it’s scheduled to come down soon.
I pass them both regularly (the Dover one daily, but not always in daylight!), I’ll try and get a couple of pictures the next time I pass by and remember!

If i remember correctly the Bedford depot was in Ampthill Rd on the left as you headed out of town. Dont know whats there now but as a kid i used to bike there from home [ 7 miles ] to collect the fleet numbers. In 1970 i drove a Noddy van on parcels for a few months then long distance work beckoned. The parcels depot was on the left as you had passed Wilmers Corner but i cant remember the street name. Wasnt the National Freight Corporation which was the successor to BRS based in St Peters Sreet?Hi Eric the pensions office is still there " The Merton Centre 45 St. Peters Street Bedford " though it is DHL which send me money now
and I never worked for them
but they have since they took over Exel.
cheers JohnnieYes Johnnie and I’m still working hard for them to keep your pension topped up !

Sorry I’m late replying to this post, But I worked at Bedford FH in the first half of the 60s. I reckon most BRS trampers used to avoid the depot like the plague because they all knew 90% of the back loads they would get out of the depot would be bricks, bricks and more bloody bricks.
As a young driver, I fell for the line from our traffic clerk, “When you’re empty, Bedford depot has a nice full load for you”.
More bloody bricks, indeed!

I didn’t think BRS was formed until 1947 Keith. Casey must have been getting on then
Cheers Dave.
When I was a lad folks had more respect for their elders!
And don’t get me started on polishing the horses’ brasses before work. When we got our first lorry we thought we would have less work to do but we soon realised that we had to get up an hour earlier to clean out the Foden’s ash pan and get the steam up!

And you try telling that to kids today!

Hi,
The Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph has just published some photo,s of buildings being demolished in their yard on Station Road Scunthorpe.
If memory serves me right this yard on Station Rd opposite Cole street, was the original BRS depot for Scunthorpe.
More transport history in the footings of another regeneration project.
