ARE YOU STILL LOCAL ?
Yes have seen your colours around Wantage a time or two !
Didn’t realise this thread was on here about BRS Depots, a fascinating read, and priceless information too.
All a bit of a trip down memory lane for me as I drove for Midlands BRS in the seventies out of Walsall and then Wolverhampton, where we mostly had Guys being so close to the factory at Park Lane Wolverhampton.
BRS Walsall, which was by Junction 10. M6, behind the Lane Arms boozer, and I drove a Big J artic as a tramp driver on general haulage and it was a great, if hard, job, but back in those days we only had log books which were the biggest works of fiction since French Marriage Vows .
Sadly Walsall depot was closed and all the old guys were made redundant and us young ones where transferred to BRS Wolverhampton, Jenner street, where I continued tramping, much to the disgust of the gaffer Ernie Downing who was all about contract work with the likes of Goodyear at Wolverhampton.
Eventually I went shunting and loading trailers for our few remaining general haulage lads in Goodyear at Chase Terrace until I became poacher turned gamekeeper and went into management with a garden tool firm in Wednesfield where I ended up as Logistics manager.
I used to have a document in my old brown BRS drivers folder that gave every BRS depot address in the UK together with the depot fleet initials but like most things it got lost over the years, I can’t even remember what Walsall or Wolverhampton fleet refs were, oh the joys of getting old, lol.
Still got my keys to my old guy Big J though, and a tax disc, lord knows why
Hi TIDDERSON, have you any pics of Hereford depot ? Think it was near the old football ground with an allocation of mainly AECs and Bristols , thanks regards Keith .
What was Herefords main traffic ? , in the late 80s to early 90s , about five of there general haulage lads with very nice clean Scania 112 or 113 were sent to Oxford depot to do the work for HABITAT Wallingford , they use to park the wagons at Wallingford , but travelled to us on a Monday and slept in the wagons all week in the yard , not sure if they got paid over nights though as most of the runs were days runs except Scotland and York ,Harrogate and Leeds .
I know they were very keen to use the power wash in the evenings .

Hiya,
When tramping for BRS Blackburn I got into Hereford occasionally and the return loads
I have had were loaded out of Bulmer’s cider usually handball for Liverpool docks and I
once or twice got loaded with pylon parts for Scotland out of Painters the structural
steel people the pylons were by far the best job always being crane on crane off. This
would have been in the 60s only ever used them for fuel after that
thanks harry, long retired.

anyone remember the Castleford brs depot, it was only small, the other one nearby was knottingley,
Hi royhebb2,
yes I remember Castleford , a small one with a workshops , running late down from scotch on a Saturday night I had a blowout on the A1 with a well loaded trailer and so into a layby for the night so had to cab it .early next morning crawled down to Castleford and found the depot open and one fitter brewing up and so joined him along with a bacon sandwich . and soon was on my way to London after fitting a new tyre–never forgot the northern hospitality !!

Hi JAKEY , they did a lot for Bulmers cider , and Painter bros structeral engineers , as well as tin plate out of Ebbw Vale , in fact a lot of steel from S Wales
Did you ever encounter BRS Ross depot , hauled out of Pressed steel Llanelli ? , they did mostly Longbridge but may be Cowley as well . regards Keith
Keith I know our lads use to do the Llanelii as a regular run day and nights , plus Adr Chris who was working on British Leyland own transport were on it day and night , not sure if I ever saw another depot tipping apart from Swindon boys with there Leyland roadtrains .

Hi Jakey , that llanneli run was in 1950s run by the welsh end of BRS to Osberton radiators using mainly 6 ton Thorneycroft Sturdeys, drivers had day in digs Abingdon rd. we used to shunt for them , later using Seddon artics from each end and changing trailers in a layby near Raglan nightly keeping our own units which pleased the drivers .
Hi TOSHBOY , Ivor parry did nights and Bernard Woodwoods did days on a Scania 112 A399MHO which came from HEREFORD DEPOT in that pooey brown colour ,before we had time to paint it in white , Geoff Phipps turned it over on to its drivers side , one night when Ivor was on holiday , Geoff lived but Ivor was not happy having to use a Marathon whilst his Scania was rebuilt .
When Ivor retired in about 96 he had 37 years service , Bernard did 49 years service and retired about 97 .
