BRS DEPOTS

JAKEY:
Hi TOSHBOY , Ivor parry did nights and Bernard Woodwoods did days on a Scania 112 A399MHO which came from HEREFORD DEPOT in that pooey brown colour ,before we had time to paint it in white , Geoff Phipps turned it over on to its drivers side , one night when Ivor was on holiday , Geoff lived but Ivor was not happy having to use a Marathon whilst his Scania was rebuilt .

When Ivor retired in about 96 he had 37 years service , Bernard did 49 years service and retired about 97 .

Jakey, Those lads had some long service so BRS was not that bad despite what many have said ,personally in my relative short time in general haulage was very happy with BRS ,and only have good memories of them ,they certainly were the best in my book , proven by my experiences with subsequent employers after privatisation.

Hi Pete, yes it’s on 44 deck in Goodyears, the Bedford would be Goodyears own , the Guy a BRS contract motor. The bulk of the fleet were BRS contract motors but Goodyear always ran some lorries with their own drivers and they only ever bought second hand vehicles, which seemed strange for a multi national company.

Was this building the actual depot in leeds■■? Iv always wondered if it was.

Hi,Yorkshire terrier, this was in fact Leeds area regional office known as Templer House.it was used not as a depot but as the main admin office for the Leeds area.the depots in Leeds were parcels office on brown lane, general haulage depots on water lane and meadow lane.for pictures of these depots check out page 110 on the" British Road Service" trucknet site.

Thanks for that it fascinates me the old leeds industry especially the haulage scene.

Hi Yorshire Terrier, just thought that if you look through Trucknet "old time lorries, companies and drivers, you’ll find a site all about A1 transport from Leeds with some photo’s I believe.

BRS had repair depot in Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire. When they cleared most of their ageing fleet they were auctioned off at these repair depots. I was only a young lad in those days but luckily we did take some pictures. Some of these photographs have been seen before in Classic and Vintage Commercial magazine but thought they would be appreciated on here. Taken with an old 'Box Brownie camera the quality leaves a bit to be desired but it’s all I have. The old site is now a housing estate.
Does anyone remember the handbook which was issued to any new member of staff starting in the job?

Yes mate I remember the brs digs in wisbech.I used to load spillers dog food for l/pool on flats outside. If it rained the loading stopped,if this continued till 4.00pm a man used to ask who needed digs. They ran you round to the digs in a van and picked you up at 7.00am.You left your truck keys in the office along with your notes and if it stopped raining the night shift loaded the trl. and draped the sheets over. The digs were fantastic, good food[plenty of it]good toilet and washing facilities, warm beds spotless clean.Believe the woman who ran it the husband was a brs night trunker.Happy days.
