BRS DEPOTS

I have added another moving photo in my video post…

Just been looking at that terrific Gloucester video again.
I had forgotten how many Seddons (pre Sed-Ak) there were on general haulage in those days. Also the S-type Bedfords and Commers. The latter with those fairings on the mirror arms. Did you spot the Standard Atlas van, and those strange Nash Metropolitans on the transporter?
But the shot of Westgate Bridge drew my attention. Where were those awful digs in relation to the bridge?
And where is that little lad waving to the camera now - on here perhaps? Watching from his comfortable armchair in his slippers? :unamused:
Fascinating.

Those Nash cars were built by BMC under licence for export back to the USA, probably heading for Avonmouth Docks.

Spardo. Those awful digs and The Westgate Cafe was on the left just out of the picture. The picture probably includes the lorry park which was between the cafe and the bridge.

sorry to be a pooper but this thread is about brs depots, sorry

To get back on thread, IIRC the BRS depot in Bridgwater in the 70’s was in Colley Lane near Wellworthy’s factory and the code was RH.

There used to be a small BRS depot in Bilton, Rugby. They used to run 3 Grimsby Fish motors from there, also Redland Tiles, i think my Brother who was on the Fish run may have some photos i will ask him.

It is now a housing estate.

The BRS Depot in Queensferry, North Wales was on Chester Road, the site is now occupied by B&Q, Lidl and Pizza Hut next to Deeside Leisure Centre.

I’ve just recalled an old BRS Depot - which could be seen just alongside the southbound side of the M6 just after passing J15 at Hanchurch Crossroads, Newcastle-under-Lyme. The yard is currently occupied by James Irlam.

Is that the one were p&o used to be.

yes thats the one.in an earlier posting somebody said that tradeteams yard on the A500 was a brs yard.why would they have two depots so close together ?

hiya,
in the early days of road transport nationalisation many small towns had several depots and in big cities they seemed to be on every street although it wasn’t very long before they got organised and what had been lots of small firms merged together into proper depots, happy days the whole caboose should have stayed british road srevices a better job for everybody thanks harry long retired.

st helens depot is now a tanker yard,at the end of the link rd from m62 opp mcdonalds.warrington depot became maynes bus depot, now that and the whole rylands site nxt to it gone, houses there now.the depot on great howard st lpool is still there, tho dont know whats in it now?
think itd be easier to say what depots are still there?

Just found this tonight. As an ex BRS driver I have to say it was one of the two best jobs I ever had!
The Glasgow depots are as follows:-
BA, Lister St. The main Glasgow Branch. Now John Lewis’s depot.
BB, Douglas Group, Townsend St. Closed way back (I worked there) The yard is still there as it was all those years ago.
BG, Argyll Group, Warroch St, Anderston, long gone.
BRS Parcels. Originally Portman St Kinning Park, moved to Dixons Blazes estate (my brother drove there). Closed a long time ago.
Hawthorn St. This was the Caledonian depot, used by their haulage and warehousing arms. Later became the BRS depot but only by default. The red fleet never operated out of there. BRS Truck Rental operated there, as did the Contracts. No BRS haulage vehicles were ever based there.
Similary, Granton (Edinburgh) was Bells old depot, same set-up as Hawthorn St.
BF, Edinburgh was based at Seafield next to a hospital who’s name escapes me, on the A1 into ‘Auld Reekie’.
Dundee was in East Dock St, only the parcels shed remains and is used as part of a small trading estate, cant remember the code for D/Dee.
Aberdeen, I think was BR. Based at Virginia St down by the docks. Just down the street was Mary’s Cafe popular with lorry drivers.
Kirkcaldy was, I think, in the Mitchelston Estate.
Alva was on the eastern side of the village,on the main st to the right, heading to Tillicoultry.
I can find where most of the depots were in Forfar, Inverness, Oban, Ayr and Ardrossan, Grangemouth, dont ask for directions, though!
Elgin, I cant remember where the depot was.
Hope all this helps.
Alex

where was the depot in forfar located

The 1950 Listing of Depots shows Forfar as being under 21B Angus Group with a depot in Robert Street. Traffic was General, Agricultural and Tipping.

Other Depots in Angus Group were:-

Arbroath; Ladyloan
Alyth; New Road
Brechin; Commerce Street
also Montrose (No further detail)

Also at 1953; Angus (Forfar): Miegle; Montrose.

Re:- Alexsaville’s posting re:- Elgin, this came under 2B - Old Ford Road (Aberdeen) Group with a Depot at Panspot Street.

r gem.where did you obtain this information ?

Hi curnock, I got the info from the book “BRS The Early Years” by Arthur Ingram and Gordon Mustoe which contains an appendix entitled “Listing of BRS Undertakings 1950” which gives details of all the Divisions, Districts, Groups, Depots etc.

I have that book, good read, great photos.

Finally got round to taking a picture of the old BRS offices in bromford Lane Erdington
