Sorry Larry, not wishing to put you off your Dram,I should have added " in any other livery but BRS" eh!Cheers Dennis.
This Freighter was based at Oxford depot ,and was on nights ,driven by Pete grimes ,he was the only Edmunds walker driver with a cb fitted .
This Two stroke comer was long gone ,but BJO 440D was retired from the fleet but was still in the yard in the middle 80s .

I’ll have to stop & think for a moment about that one, Keith, as it’s quite a long time ago! To the best of my memory, there was just the one Mercury artic from the James Smith fleet when I arrived at Merrin End, which stayed in it’s green livery, albeit with the sign writing painted over and the BRS fleet number applied. As far as I can remember, the only other ex-JS lorry still at the depot was the venerable 8-wheeler Atki, HJS30, also retaining it’s green colours. The rest of the English Bicknor fleet had been disposed of by then (1966/67) with the exception of a lone ERF artic which pulled a tipping trailer and had had a quick coat of “BRS Tipper Grey” applied. One odd Smith tipping trailer was retained which I had the use of for about six months, a single axle with a Ford 8 unit as a donkey engine.
I stand to be corrected on the above but that’s the extent of my recall at my advanced age!
Another from those days
HI, Tidderson , We had AEC 8 wheelers flats ,dark green ex brs Bristol area ,Think they must have been on Contract , reg nos ,224 /226 CFJ , can you through any light on them ,Cheers Barry
Tidderson,What memories you have awoken I have worked on that Comet.Dont you remember Andy Workmans AEC Mercury unit?
AS ex BRS BANBURY 1967,and MORTON’S DRIVER i have often wondered what sort of WAGE DEAL WAS STRUCK WITH THE DRIVERS WHO started the middle east work in the 1970s from NORTHAMPTON DEPOT as you all know at that time we were all 100% unionised ,running legal ,max 10 hours A DAY DUTY AND DRIVING or like that, so how did they do it ,did the top union men know ,■■?A SEPARATE WAGE DEAL someone will know if you are one of the ex drivers spill the beans.please.

My boredom is starting to lighten up Dennis, Ive just opened another bottle of Glenmorangie, Im pleased that the BRS lot is long gone from the past, When I think about all the dodgey night money that they paid out to drivers who parked up close to base & who have had plenty of time to get back but just hung about in cafes & wasted time to get money under false pretences its little wonder they Denationolised part of it in 1953, Im pleased they did otherwise I might not of had the chance to have my own small family haulage Co, I never made my fortune but my two sons & the drivers we had helped us to make a good living and salt a few bob away for our later years, Regards Larry.
