Hi ROF, the red & rust phrase you mentioned was lacking the RUBBISH bit, Hence the initials RRR, I know a lot of drivers made a good living driving BRS motors, But at the end of the day IMOO, It was a total waste of tax payers money, And I must say that I didn’t allways do things to the book when I ran our family haulage Co, But how many successful hauliers who are still trading to-day did not bend the rules, After all there was plenty of BRS drivers who didn’t mind doing it with their dodgey nights out, Regards Larry.

How dare you cast such a cruel and unfounded slur on that wonderful group of lorry drivers, none of whom would have condoned any hint of “dodgy” practices.

Ostensibly.

Oxford Dictionary------ Ostensibly-------“apparent,seeming,pretend” but as far as you and ROF are concerned “H” it should be termed “allegedly” quickly followed by “bang to rights” :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:       Cheers Judge Rinder!

Well ROF,You know the old saying He Who Dares Wins, Ha Ha, Regards Larry.

My boredom is starting to lighten up Dennis, Ive just opened another bottle of Glenmorangie, Im pleased that the BRS lot is long gone from the past, When I think about all the dodgey night money that they paid out to drivers who parked up close to base & who have had plenty of time to get back but just hung about in cafes & wasted time to get money under false pretences its little wonder they Denationolised part of it in 1953, Im pleased they did otherwise I might not of had the chance to have my own small family haulage Co, I never made my fortune but my two sons & the drivers we had helped us to make a good living and salt a few bob away for our later years, Regards Larry.

There’s a tale about this BRS motor and driver in a Bob Tuck book IIRC,the shot is taken at DEC Workington and the driver’s nick name was “Blossom”(he had worked with horses on the timber job),I believe the Octopus was based at either Bradford or maybe Scunny but apparently when there was some heavy castings to load at Workington the local BRS depot at Howgate,Whitehaven would get this particular motor up to W.■■■■■■■ because of it’s strong flat and IIRC something to do with it’s wheels/tyre sizes, maybe it was the only BRS motor with legal tyres !!! Cheers Dennis.

I must admit to “daring” to hand in some fairly fictitious expense forms on a Saturday morning in my time!

Hiya,
Ah’ at least mine were all genuine I wrote them myself and the car/lorry park tickets
I personally printed them on an Adana printing gadget and they must have been the
bee’s knee’s I never had one rejected Ah’ and Op’s 6 was a bit like giving a pig peaches.
thanks harry, long retired.

We had a driver at our depot who did a bit of part-time printing. He would sell a book of fifty half crown parking tickets for ten bob! Did a roaring trade and nobody in the traffic office questioned why so many identical tickets were handed in.

Is that a confession ROF…twice cos of the guilt building up after all these years?

Now why is it no surprise BRS got shut down eventually, had it not for the regular “financial bail outs” they received from government they would have disappeared before 1950 :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

the only time i worked for brs was on brs contracts . a dozen or so brand new aec tractors with insulated dump trailers . what a farce ! started on the appointed monday , one motor in the yard , " we are waiting for the others to come , and anyway the depot is on strike today , go home and we’ ll pay you anyway " the waiting continued as the lorries trickled in one by one and the end of the second week we all got one . the trailers were useless on barber greens , going back to neville’s for umpteen modifications . they were to be night loaded so a shunt unit was sent ( another brand new aec ) with hydraulic pickup on the turntable . ah , a snag the turntable pivots in the centre ( as all turntables do ), the rubbing plate on the trailer also pivots in the centre , so they had to scrap the hydraulics . the whole thing was a comedy of errors . i felt sorry for the depot manager , a great bloke , ex driver who had it all foisted on him by those above . dave
