Had a few loads but didn’t have the luxury of a hook- I always though they were reserved for dockers and Glaswegian lorry drivers! Almost as bad were the bales of cotton we hauled out of Liverpool Docks. They came out of the top of the warehouse on a “gravity line” and you had just the one chance to land the thundering great thing in the position you wanted it. Fork lift trucks were strictly reserved for moving pallets in those days.

Hi R o f, I aint Glaswegian did my driving days in Bradford, all Bradford wool drivers had a very shiny hand hook, did the montys out of the slings on Liverpool docks, where they dropped they stayed, first load I did should have had marker boards, wide berth on the East Lancs Road, happy days.

Yes, remember that method of loading with the gravity line. you soon had to get the hang of it or else the load looked a right dog’s breakfast. Happy days

no worries, it was on Carr Lane apparently and after a quick goole map search I’d say it was on the junction of Carr Lane and New Works Road. There is an old stone warehouse on the corner that has BRS red doors and paintwork.

Hi, BRS definitely had a depot in Legrams Lane in the 60s, I used to pass it every day when I worked at SPC on Shearbridge Rd cant remember when it closed.
Les.
Got this from a local history site…
British Road Services depot in Carr Lane opened February 4th 1967
Hi.
Worked out of Hull (DC) leads rd.Mid/late 60’s Was the Bradford yard entrance two Whale rib Bones ?.Had a great time with BRS Hull ,Forman,George Humphries, proper man!,Dennis Naggs.Bobby Beich?.Ben Nevis.Charlie Ozzi,Jockey Isley.Porky Ward.Appy Applegate ?.Boss,a Welsh chap Gareth Williams, top man. Rosemary in the office, and a new chap,“Tricky Dicky”.I was being ■■■■■■ about at a depot in East Anglia,it got to the stage where they rang Hull. Tricky asked me what the weather was like,i told him fine,he said,“Tell him to stick his load up his arse, its raining here and i don’t want you enjoying yourself, ring me when your halfway back”. The router, when told, said who was that,i said,“The man with the plan”,i was told never to go in there again, result. Tricky Dicky came to us from Ferry Masters, boss there Ben Bonner ? another good man.
Happy days while working in Hull, great blokes, super comeraderie ?,when i used to say how friendly the people were in Hull, someone said.“They have got to be friendly, the North sea one side, the River Humber along the bottom,if they fall out, there is no one else to speak to”.Hull, would i go back ?. YES ! BUT,surrounded with the same set of mates and drivers.Happy days.

Hi Ramone, I Google mapped it and on there the garage has still got the red doors. I knew a driver there that had a bad smash with a Smith Parkinson & Cole truck on the Addingham bypass caused by duck and ducklings crossing the road, he went out through the windscreen slit his neck, and lived our driver was unhurt, not the best callout we had, and to top it had to shovel the load of coal out into another truck.

Hi, Guy’s I found these pictures of Transport House Halifax being demolished. The building originally belonged to Holdsworth/Hanson group.it was transfered to BRS parcels and was used up until closure by Roadline in early 70’s.If you look in the book BRS parcels, you will see what it looked like in the early 1930’s.i was amazed to see the outside fire escape still in it’s original design.
Good photo, that.
Although I’m surprised that a couple of enterprising fitters didn’t take he gas axe to the fire escape & get it weighed in. They would have done at our depot!
BRS Northampton (kw)used to have loads of contracts in the 80’s , Trondex , Rest Assured , Brown Brothers , Blackwood Hodge , Travis & Arnold , Camping Gaz , Dana Spicer , Mothercare , Habitat - most were trunked on ‘A’ frame wagon n drag ray smith demounts & delivered by the rigid on days , 20 + years on the only one left is Travis Perkins ( run now by DHL of course )

Bromford Lane was were we used to go on ‘driver training’ ,fuel econ, defensive etc , had a sed ak 400 , Ron Tarbuck & Gerry were the instructors , Rons old Bristol was there (80’s ) Think we used to stop at Elsies? b&b
