Does anyone happen to have a list of depot codes ?. I have the BRS Book “The Early Years 1948 - 1953” but it seems they changed them after this time.
I’m trying to sort out photos and match them to depots, but I am struggling. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

hiya,
Tufnell Park anybody?? used it regularly but can’t remember depot code.
thanks harry, long retired.

I used Mile End for fuel & subs when in London but I can only remember the code for my home depot. Whatever happened to that leaflet with all the depots on it?

Are those codes the ones used for fleet nbers?

I only ask,as when working at peterborough, they seemed to use the code KY,
The vehicle workshop being KYE,Rental being KYR,and contracts being KYC,
unless this was purely a local/internal designation?

Depends on how old that list is, they changed it quite often over the years, I think the last change would have been in the 70’s when it was split up into regions. I know my branch codes at Oldbury and Wolverhampton were originally EJ & ED but when it became Midlands BRS it was changed to MJ & MD the change to M denoting Midlands. You are right about the additional letter on the end of a fleet number, E was engineering R was rental division and C denoted the vehicle was on a dedicated contract often in the customers livery.

As the list says , Oxford was MA ,when it was under Midlands but just after I started in the early 80s it came under the Western group, and the fleet code was TA, I know as it was me going round at 16 changing the fleet codes :unamused: ,bloody boring when you had to wipe the dirt of the cab to see it .

Now don’t go trying to persuade us that you were Oxford’s ace signwriter. We all remember those galvanised stencils!

Hi rof, no we were tight and used the stickey number plate letters, but I think some wagons on the fleet were sign written .

Maybe it was considered easier, quicker & cheaper to use the awful stencils when BRS took us over. The fitter would load a brush up with white paint, hold the stencil against the bodywork and dab paint through the gaps. Yuk!
I didn’t let them near my pride and joy with the things, preferring to use the stencils to outline the figures in pencil then paint them in properly.

For some reason or other our’s had the fleet number also painted on the inside of the passenger door, never figured why

Maybe it was to remind trampers where “home” was

These were the codes given to each depot in 1964. I will try to download the 1972 codes later

Rootes Group cars in Cowley? Bet that was popular!

Hi ROF ,it was Pressed Steel Fisher at both Cowley and Swindon that produced pressings for BMC and the Rootes group .
BRS at Swindon had Commer 2 strokes on that contract . regards Keith

Cowley made pressing for Rootes group/ Chrysler right up to 1980’s, I use to run body panels from Cowley to Linwood in the late 70’s also we took panels to the National Bus in Workington from Cowley.

I can’t remember which factory they put the rust in the panels.
