British road Services

As far as I can remember, the rust was added before the steel left the steelworks!
On a related subject, a couple of us drivers got chatting to a bloke in Ford’s at Dagenham who turned out to be one of the bods in Ford’s purchasing department. He reckoned that it was cheaper to import steel coils from Japan than from Llanwern. Apparently the Japanese would quote up to 15% lower than British Steel, then absorb the shipping costs & the inevitable losses due to salt water damage.

Rootes Group cars in Cowley? Bet that was popular!

Hi ROF ,it was Pressed Steel Fisher at both Cowley and Swindon that produced pressings for BMC and the Rootes group .
BRS at Swindon had Commer 2 strokes on that contract . regards Keith

Cowley made pressing for Rootes group/ Chrysler right up to 1980’s, I use to run body panels from Cowley to Linwood in the late 70’s also we took panels to the National Bus in Workington from Cowley.

Was that for the Imps ? regards kk

hiya,
Not actually BRS related but was driving for them at the time, had a load
to deliver in the vicinity of the old Linwood car plant, there was cows in
the fenced areas feeding off the lawns and verges, the buildings were all
deserted and not a Hillman Imp in sight, must have been in the 70s.

Does anyone have recollections or photos of swansea depots AEC matador recovery lorry, colour of Bottogas lorries and colour ,signwriting and type of trailers pulled by BMC and Commer units on the Prescold contract Please.

Nice to see the old BRS thread is still going, I still get a pension from Norwich union for time servered from 1972 t0 78 a vast amount of £2, not heard from Frenchy who started this thread, he moved his house in france and was only on a few times after that.I don’t think he was in good health, if he has pasted on, I hope he is still looking a the red & rust era.

No KK, it was for the Hillman Hunter, the Imp was long finished by then, I can also remember getting a phone call from John Edden (JDR Birmingham) in 1980 asking me if I would like to do a quicky to Turin, to pick up the last 200 fuel pump assemblies for the Hunter, which a did in a Simca Van, left Wednesday night , back Saturday morning.

Saw this at a show recently & the Reg. No. caught my attention. The display board said it was ex BRS Oxford & the lad with it said it had been re cabbed in '82. He had a picture of another motor as original, single head lights etc. :sunglasses: Any of you ex red & rust boys remember this one?

Was new to Oxford fleet no. 4G554 then later MA127.

Ah! thanks for that Tidders, I see that one has the original type of cab on it. The newer type seems to be bigger, more beefy, if you know what I mean.

Only can find 2 records of Matadors in Swansea. FKG 167 ex WD to Cardiff insept 1950 fleet no. 2G398 then 1G276. Transfered to Swansea Apr 1979 on Trade plate 248 CY.
The other is an AEC 6x6 recovery transfered to Swansea in Dec 1954 as 20G648 then 2G137 in 1956 then GH29 in 1964
! think the Botogas lorries were maroon with cream wheels. Bodies fitted by Vickers in Portsmouth. Mainly based in the Oxford region but worked out of Swansea and Exeter as well
The BMC and Commers usually pulled single axle trailers with early curtainside held down with leather straps. All were light blue as were the tractor units. I can only find 1 photo of a BMC plus a model I made some time ago. They also were used to transport the car body shells

Ah! I well remember those Prestcold motors & the Commers on the Car Body job. Thanks for the pictures, I didn’t know you were a modeller Tidderson. I like the Commer with the sports car bodies on & a nice touch with the wraps. Was that just a way of mocking up some bodies, only I can’t recall seeing any like that, That’s not to say there wasn’t any, as I only saw them up & down the road (never actually worked on them) & it was a long time ago! I have had a model on the go for a long time now & managed to get a few Minix bodies off E bay, but still can’t bring myself to break some good ones to complete the load! What scale are your models in & are they scratch built? as mine are only in 1/76, so a bit fiddly!

They had those Commers at Swindon with the bodies under wrap , serving Cowley and Rootes at Coventry .regards kk

Many thanks for the information and photos re Swansea lorries very helpful as I am trying to make up a collection of models from Swansea and Carmarthen depots in 1-76 I can remember seeing them but just cannot remember all the vehicle details. Was the AEC ex army? Once again many thanks.

Tufnell Park would have to have been the worst BRS depot to park up in. If you were loaded, you had to check your sheets the next morning there was so much pilfering going on. If you were empty, it was likely that someone had nicked one of your sheets. Not only that, but the digs in the area were bloody disgusting.

hiya,
Tufnell Park anybody?? used it regularly but can’t remember depot code.
thanks harry, long retired.

hiya,
Tufnell park!!! you was lucky to be allowed to park in there, it was
always a case of fill up and try Hampstead which was another no no
none of the London depot’s had any time for the drivers from “away”
and you was usually directed to an “out of town” depot for any hope
of a return load.

Not a depot just an overnight stop. Blackburn Bros haulage yard in Meadrow Godalming. Digs 100yds up the road. Also used Pickfords depository up the road and the old Godalming Goods depot yard nearer the town.

Took my Albion out weekend
