Just got back from the hospital in Winnipeg after visiting Bob the dog. Bob has been hospitalised since Sunday following a serious accident on his quad. Won’t go into any details of the accident but he was in a serious condition at one stage with a list of injuries including 5 or 6 cracked ribs, a seperated right shoulder, one collapsed lung and the other partially collapsed.
He was in very good spirits today up moving around, we even spent most of the morning sitting outside in the cool of the shade drinking coffee from a Tim Hortons located in the hospital.
He is still receiving morphine for the pain and has a drain to release fluid from his chest. The caphiter has been taken out but they are still monitoring his body fluids and both lungs seem to be back to normal. He is still in quite a bit of pain with his shoulder and ribs and it is going to be a tough road to get back to full strength.
He is hoping to get home in a couple of days, once the drain is removed and breathing normally.
We wish BTD all the best for a full and speedy recovery.
ps. Mrs BTD, just let us know if you need anything at all.
Sorry to hear of the accident BTD. Hope you make a speedy recovery, and will one day meet on the open road (when i eventually pass lol).
Your ribs are gonna ache for ages, I broke 2 or 3 (uncertain how many as the hospital didnt get me x-rayed, as not much they can do for ribs anyway) just over a year ago, and they still occasionally give me some trouble.
I hope Neil mends soon ;those quads are lethal ,probably better off with a motorbike for off-roading … CELEBRITIES Ozzy Osbourne and Rik Mayall were seriously hurt in quad bike accidents. Give him my best regards.
I broke 3 of my ribs two days before christmas and It was nothing near as serious as this case but it was agony for a month at least and even now after 6 months the cartilidge still hurts if I move suddenly.
I was lucky due to the fact that mine was a work related accident and the company I work for made sure I was paid fully for the month I was off, Bob’s accident was in his own time
I am glad you have managed to get through to see him Dave. I bet he appreciated seeing a friend. If i had known i would of asked you to pick some old British magazines we have at home. Old take a breaks and that. Hopefully i will be able to go myself when i get home. I am thinking of him and hope gets into a more comfortable condition soon because it sounds terrible.
Hi folks. Thanks for the kind wishes. I am home again, very sore and expecting to remain so for a while, but the lungs are stable now and the multiple rib fractures are just going to have to get better on their own. The shoulder is doing ok, although it still looks pretty ugly at the moment.
Luckily, when the quad landed on me, it landed on my legs and not my upper body.
I tell you what, when the other lung collapsed I really thought I was gone.
Glad to have you back ,Neil . You’ll be firing on all six cylinders before you know it . Maybe not the time to ask but did your insurance fully cover the treatment & time off…?
Not sure, how it will work, Harry. It depends how long I need to be off work a bit. The short term disability is not covered by the company and is done through the govt employment insurance office. I am going to look into that today. If it were game over then I think the company insurance would then cover my income for life.
As for the medical care, well the ambulance I may get billed for, but I can simply send the bill off to the insurers or the province. The hospital stay is covered by Manitoba and the drugs and surgical stuff is also fully covered. The prescriptions are covered under the company insurance, which entitles me to 80% rebate at source, so they are manageable enough.
If it had happened in the US, they would have looked for my wallet first, just to be sure I was insured. I used to make something of a joke about it, but this accident has made me realise just how unfunny that situation is…

Stop whining man, it was only your lungs FFS
Seems like your flatbedding days are over for a while, if you end up moving on & need an introduction give me a call, lots of miles at my place & you get a PROPER Peterbilt
All the best mate, you know where I am if you need anything.
Thanks Mark. KSW say they will put me on vans, and I am hoping they will come up with a nice regular run for me so I can go back sooner but still get back for the doctor regularly.
And it wasn’t only my lungs, it was the ribs and the shoulder that really hurt. The inability to breathe was just scary…
