IIRC both Blue Band Motors and Lockerbie Transport used to load their trunk motors back from London via J & W Watt’s London Colney office in the 60’s/70’s I think it was mainly Fruit and Veg from Covent Garden and Paddock Wood for Glasgow Market, well it was when I was about with my first motor at that time.Cheers Bewick.

When i was on for munro of aberdeen in east kilbride, they used to deliver tyres into us for onward delivery to orkney and shetland.Drivers name was stevie,no idea what his second name was.

hi,i worked for blue band motors in 2002,at the rushden dept, it was called bbx then, went in on a thursday morning, and the yard was all locked up,they had gone bust, it came as a bit of a shock as nothing was said on the wednesday evening when i finished my shift. by this time it was nothing to do with aileys transport cheers diesel

My second job driving an artic was for BBM in shepshed in 1990, i thought, nice, a merc, nice an easy to drive.
No ! I got a red A reg ERF with ■■■■■■■ 320  To be fair, it weren’t a bad motor !

Hi,

blue band had a depot near me in northamptonshire it closed down a few years ago i think the rest followed as well.

thanks ftdb team

I can remember Blue Band, in fact in 1971 when I was a drivers mate on Banbury Buildings , we had been upto Glasgow with a load, but we still had 3 garage doors to go to Newton Stewart, well we figured if we didn’t go to Newton Stewart we could get back that night, so we drove the old Albion Clydesdale round to Blue Band Motors in Lockerbie and they said they would deliver all 3 for 12/6d, which we did.

I think Blueband were bought out by Freightroute.

Blueband used to have a depot in Airth near Falkirk they sold up,I was told they run under the name Freightroute based in larbert near falkirk.

There was a Blue Band in Bradford that closed and there`s a Freightroute in Bradford they are based in Northamptonshire i think

they also had a depot in birstall think its nightfreight now

They merged with Aileys and became Ailey blue Band but they are no more, Freightroute was a spin off by one of the directors cant remember his name though, they were based at Irthlinborough

When I was running up and down to London with my first motor I remember that Blue Band Motors and Lockerbie Transport always re-loaded off J & W Watt, London Colney, for Scotland. They both ran trunks to London,LTL ran a lot of meat IIRC,don’t know what BBM ran but J. & W.s manager Harold Dunkley always re-loaded them.I think they were good friends of Watts.and were an integral part of the operation from the London end of Watts. Cheers Dennis.

well this is my take on things , LTL were ran by the smith family ,at one time the smith bros, had …farms, slaughter houses.ran livestock firm ,and a dairy .
A smith &sons ran albion clydesdale, rievers ,&a hippo based at priestdykes farm at what is oposite the creamery ,you could still see the (black shed)hanger & loading ramp,A frame for winching bodies off.
that was ran by alex, also the farm-----------applegarthtown farm ,bobby,(lochmaben area) ,beatock farm ,robert ,strathaven farm robert, grantshouse ,forrest, ,maxton farm ,forrest, annanbank farm forrest then craig (his son),craig also ran LTL.after the livestock side packed in in 1969-70…annanbank supplied the milk depot in lockerbie high st.(sold to mcghies dairy lochmaben early 70s…the slaughter house was ran by all the bros (shares ) they also ran the racks slaughter house for a while(dumfries).
blue band motors was owned by matt turnbull who was a related to the smiths cant quite remember how! :bulb: :bulb:
yup bewick was quite right about watts.v good friends…
At the end LTL had a long term contract hauling TVs from panasonic  haddington to london ,but loyalty meant nothing!! last time on TV was hauling …from lockerbie with Pan -am disaster stuff.
jimmy ex lockerbie boy ,my dad was a long time smiths employee.
