This is on the subject of motorways/trunk roads being coned off, down to one lane.
I would like to know why they absolutely have to do this !■■ Apart from it being extremely annoying,it causes totally unnecessary hold ups/delays. I mean,at the least little opportunity, they will cone off a motorway down to one lane, even if they are just cutting the grass on the hard shoulder borders! Plus a lot of the time, you can go through one of these ‘events’,without seeing ANY activity whatsoever…where are they !■■
Example…Last week,I went down to the PRDC depot,on the north circular in London (Royal Mail) and with the D/D trailers,we have to go in via the M25/M40/A40 up to hanger lane. Now,on my way back out,I gets to thejunction where you come off the M40 to go M25 northbound…What had they done ■■..Completely closed that junction (unnecessarily)…So,I had to go further west on the M40,to the next junction, the return eastbound, back to the M25… Entry to the M25 north was closed from that side too !! Aaargh ! …So,then I had to go M25 southbound, down to next junction and return on northbound side only to find the they’d coned the M25 down to one lane ,from right under the M40/M25 junction, where I wanted to get on in the first place. This went on for about 4/5 miles (causing chaos) and I saw absolutely NO work going on !!
That performance cost me at least 30 minutes that I could ill afford, being 4 hours from base anyway ! So…I’d like to know which ■■■■■■■ muppets/morons thinks that it’s a good idea/clever to automatically closed major routes down to one lane, especially when a lot of the time,it’s simply not necessary !■■
Who’s responsible for the roads these days ■■ Who do I call to give them a blasting !■■ This is happening all over the country and it’s extremely annoying and is sheer stupidity,in my view !
Given that the only quiet time on the roads these days is 03:05 to 03:10 - perhaps we can invent teleportation so the road workers can zonk the cones all into place at 03:04:59 and then magic them away again at 03:10:01
I’ve been getting stuck of late when they keep closing down J11-J10 anticlockwise on the M25, starting earlier and earlier. I think I get a reprieve tonight though at least, as I understand that roadworks have been discontinued across the august bank holiday weekend.
Somtimes it seems as if all these workers are doing is changing lightbulbs in the gantry, and re-aligning the downward-facing flash cameras that probably got knocked off-alignment in the first place by objecting motorists throwing bricks at them.
It goes along the lines of lets make use of the roads to get anywhere as unattractive as possible so that people switch to using rail either for freight or passenger traffic.
Well, you and the white van man I had the misfortune to follow last week. He vented his frustration by taking out half a dozen, scattering them across the carriageway & leaving me to flatten them in his wake!
Or the bellend was just on the phone and not paying attention…

op said he was delayed for AT LEAST half an hour . big deal, get a reality check.
Well excuse me for saying so,but that’s a stupid unthinking response ! Try reading the post again… some of us have to work with the drivers hours regs !
While I understand the need to protect the workers sometimes it just isn’t necessary to reduce to one lane. The concrete works that were being done on the M25 between 10 and 8 for example. There was only work carried out on one carriageway at a time on a 4 lane + H/S section. No reason that they can’t use 3 lanes and reduce the running lanes to 2 instead of one. The potential for an accident when traffic is backed up at 1am when not expected must surely be increased therefore making an extra threat to the workers.

we all have to work within the drivers hours regs, .me to. but in real life ■■■■ happens, half an hour is hardly the end of the world, and vosa would see it that way too. common sense is good
unless you work for these companies that want to MAX your hours every shift. but the op said it was a 4 hour drive. so he had drive time to spare, so whats the problem

half an hour is hardly the end of the world, and vosa would see it that way too. I wouldn’t want to put that theory to the test ! common sense is good
Pity these road works lot don’t use a bit more of it then,eh ■■
Yet again a load of bloody lorry drivers who reckon they know best how to do someone else’s job. How do they feel I wonder when Joe Soap advises them how best to do their job…?

i dont work for these road works lot. im a truck /lorry driver. and i use common sense,
if im diverted by road works ,and it will take me over my driving time, i will do my shift and take a printout
explaining why im over, within reason of course.but i repeat op said 4 hour drive, 30 min delay ,so whats the problem
James the cat:
They’ll stop coning off when we and car drivers stop squashing their workers like nine pins.
Even for grass cutting
And how often does that happen ?
only needs to happen once, and someones dead.
op said he was delayed for AT LEAST half an hour . big deal, get a reality check.
Take that half an hour, and multiply it by the thousands of motorists held up by this illogical operation.
For example, say 20,000 people are held up for half an hour per day due to poorly designed/OTT roadworks restrictions (it WILL be more than this), that is over a YEAR of lost man hours per day.
If we assume the average person lives to 80, so long as we’re not squashing a roadworker more than once every couple of months or so, we’re quids in. Net productivity remains unchanged, and in fact probably increases slightly as the average motorist (and even lorry driver) is more productive than your run of the mill, lazy, luminescent, knuckle dragging moron having a ■■■ on the job at the side of the road instead of doing the bloody job we pay them to do.
Let’s lose the cones (and 90% of the HSE), reapply Darwinism, pay people more money to work on the side of the road without protection on the understanding that it’s a dangerous job and it’s your choice to do it.
Each and every person alive who’s been stuck in an unnecessary traffic jam for an hour - is an hour closer to their death at the end of it than when they first got stuck.
