Aye Harry they were the days Eh, Can remember Bull Hill CafƩ opposite side to Walshs, It was owned by Jim Westerman, He had a couple of wagons he used to load us back with wallpaper form a mill in Darwen, And Baxters who I worked for used to load himback with Danish bacon for Tatersalls in St.Peter Street,& Ayton & Hunter Provisions, Happy long gone days Im afraid to say, Regards Larry.

Walsh family still there Larry, but caravan storage and auto electrics now,the cafƩ was bought out by Little chef but now another restaurant of some sort.

Not quite Blackburn but you’ve nudged my memory. On Pritchetts we used to load cardboard carpet cores from an old mill factory, right next to the M62 at Rochdale. Eddie Heaton may remember it. Absolute flying loads. Quick to load and about 5 tons. Nae bother, even for the Mastiff.

John

Hiya,
Larry’s answered your Question, and up to arriving in the North East about 44
years ago I didn’t know what the netty was either but if I hadn’t found out I’d
certainly be crossing my legs by now, very educational this eh’ John.

Hiya,
Is there anyone on here who remembers Deans of Darwen a little four wagon firm
three rigid’s and one Atki borderer artic bought because I had the only class one
licence at the time, I know the Guvnor Geoff Catlow passed away not all that long
ago and I’ve spoken via Trucknet to the lad who now owns Deans garage which is
a repair centre for commercial vehicles in Watery lane Darwen , Did Deans have
to shut shop with the demise of Courtaulds their main and only customer I never
carried anything else other than when he got me the artic and I took it on tramp
finding my own return loads, I think the Courtaulds work was subbied via Nuttall’s
then in Heywood at least the work was sorted out through ā€œNuttie’sā€ shunter who
was based at Greenfield works North Wales.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi Harry,

Been reading these threads for a while and now might be able to add my twopennerth.

Deans of Darwen or S. Dean & Son as we called them. We sold them a few Seddon 13/4’s and 16/4’s in 1969 and 1970. Got their reg no’s as well.

Geoff Catlow, if I recall, also had an off licence business. When times were good he would buy a new truck and just store it until needed.

Met another x-Deans driver who now has a airgun business in Preesall but just can’t recall his name. Must put more water in it.

Peter.

Hiya,
Thanks Peter when I first worked for Deans it would be around 1970 and he then
had four motors, two Seddon six wheelers a Seddon four wheeler and a four
wheeled Dodge the oldest motor, which I drove me being the most junior driver
Geoff did swap the Dodge for a new Atki Borderer with a thirty three foot trailer
I didn’t know about the off-licence side of things, unfortunately I can’t recall any
of the drivers names I’ve lived in the County Durham area for over forty years,
I remember Geoff had been a commissioned officer in the Royal Artillery I was in
the same regiment much later of course but as a very junior rank, I was a decent
mechanic in those days and Geoff used to pay me a bit extra to do maintenance
jobs over the weekend Oh’ can remember the drivers Christian names, David,
Norman and an older guy who we all called Old Jimmy, no surnames though.

I remember John Hindle didn’t he have a sister a television actress,? there’s a
lot of the old drivers gone now Fred, The Ghost, Terry Tuckwell, Nobby Clark,
I did see Terry’s son also Terry had passed away I don’t think he ever became
a driver but I remember him coming to the yard to meet his dad, after work,
and of course our old pal Stan Hindle a true gent, I remember Stan and me we
had spent the weekend boozing in the pubs of Accrington and we was going to
London on the Sunday I had my car so I brought us both to the yard we were
still drunk and of course had to meet Harold Newlove both skint and in need
of funds from the tin box if we’d have breathed on Harold we’d have both got
the sack, happy day’s though Fred.
