Hiya,
Didn’t know this thread existed, what a cracking read loads of stuff
I remember but some outfits long gone and obviously forgotten are
not mentioned who remembers Darwen Dispatch then there was
Deans of Watery Lane Darwen, or Kings motors they had a yard at
the back of Blackburn railway station now a car park they did a lot
of hanging meat from Preston dock to all points South they had a
fleet of rigid Seddons, anybody !!!
thanks harry, long retired.

Hiya Harry,

I remember spending many hours salivating over ‘Commercial Motor’ adverts of 4wheeler Seddons in 1969 (sad, qui moi?) which had a carrying capacity of 10 tons! They just looked so modern.

Money was the problem! The LAD Leyland (seven years old) which I did buy, could legally carry nine. Not sure if you remember, but that era equivalent of VOSA used to haunt a particularly large lay by on the A6 a few miles south of Carlisle. As I crested the hill before it I saw them. Luckily, there was another lay by at the top of the hill. I pulled in and sat and ate my sandwiches and drank from my flask.

I carried round timber which always looked massive - remember Charnley’s of Longtown? Their Guy big J’s looked brilliant to me - but I guess like a magnet to the ‘Monastry’.

I waited until they had filled the lay by with trucks then set off - every man on that lay by watched me go by!

The coppers were dying to pull me in, but it was full!

When I got to Riding and Anderton’s in Wigan I was more than a ton overloaded!

The small victories are the best!

John

Hiya,
Another well established firm that became part of the Gilbraith
group and ran a lot of four wheeler ERFs was Jacks Motors.

the hydrogen peroxide round hairdressers just about everywhere.

Hi All

Were Gilbraith Transport & Gilbraith Tankers different companies? One was taken over by Imperial Tankers & the other by Pollocks.

Gilbraith (TS) is a well established transport and storage company based in Blackburn in the North West of England which can trace its roots back to 1920 recently taken over by Pollocks as you say amerindo

So who were the Gilbraith that were taken over by Imperial Tankers, part of the same group?

Gilbraiths of Accrington where a group of companies who were Leyland distributers with depots in Accrington & Botany Bay{Chorley} a British Leyland car dealership,Road & Tipper haulage & Tanker haulage, they were gradually hived off over the years until finally became non existant last year. :frowning:

That was Gilbraith Tankers from Clayton-le-Moors, latterly part of the Simon Engineering group. Jack’s Motors in Blackburn had been a subsidiary of Gilbraith Tankers

They also had both Ford and Vauxhall dealerships in Accrington, under different names. I’m not sure what has become of Accrington Garages, for instance, the Vauxhall dealership on Burnley Road

Not quite Blackburn but can anybody remember Shopfitters from Darwin whose vans could be seen parked up for the night on lorry parks all over England, Scotland and Wales. Have you got any photos Paul and John.

Shopfitters were from Qswaldtwistle Mushroom ,they ran a lot of Bedfords and Fords at one time, they went bust 20 years or so ago, their old mill is still there with parts of it still painted in their blue colour.

Not sure this picture belongs in the Blackburn thread but saw this the other day and snapped it…Blackburn?..Lancashire?..close enough for jazz !!

“Close enough for jazz” sounds like a Stan Freberg quotation!
