I used to see a firm from - I think - Erdington running down the A1 at night when I was on trunk. For the life of me I can’t recall the name, they ran four-wheeled Scanias and I think they were a brown colour. It may have said “North East-Birmingham” on the back of the motors, and they never flew about, very steady.
Might have been Sutton Coldfield.
Chris that description sounds like Turnbulls they was on the Tyburn rd in erdington, right next to junction 6

Thanks for that Andy.Yes it was Turnbulls,I don’t reckon they travelled fast enough to go up North-East and back in a shift.

Arthur Turnbull was the name on the door, the lorries didn’t go fast but iirc the son that ran the business was a racing driver !
One of Turnbull’s Scania 80, 4 wheelers was pictured in Pat Kennett’s book on Scania, the caption said it had over 1,000,000 miles on it at the time of writing. The lorry was very dirty and an old boy with a jacket and flat cap was either just getting in or maybe out of it.iirc.
r slicker:
here is a blast from the past for you.i worked at stokes drums in west brom. are they still going ?. 2 ford cargo tractor units all steel drums handball on handball off. thats how i honed my crown green bowling skills rolling them off.
Hi slicker I worked there in about 1976.Parked the cargo on a hill turned round and it had rolled away.

Hi Wagsie, nice to see you posting again, seen you’ve been looking in, hope you are keeping ok. That’s a fair old list of firms there! some I remember some I don’t, but It got me thinking. I remember a couple of chaps I came across at R.H.A. meetings, that quite impressed me at the time. One, a fine upstanding fellow, who’s name, I believe was Bert Neeley, and traded as Neeley Transport. I heard some years later that his company had folded, being caught up in a lot of bad dept, (which came as a shock to me, as he seemed very professional and rock solid,) however I could never get this substantiated. Another was a chap of slight statue, but very articulate, and IIRC was manager of Chambers & Cook. I think his name was Pat, could have been Blackburn, but not too sure on that. He was into speedboat racing in a big way and was a Champion at some level but I can’t remember what! He later had a big accident from which he took a long time to recover, but I was told he did fully in the course of time. I seem to remember hearing that his son followed in his footsteps, but again I am a bit vague on that" Funny what comes into your head isn’t it, but was just wondering, does anyone remember either of these guys.
Hi all, anyone remember Maxi(Caledonian Carriers).Used to share a w/house with chambers + Cook on Fryers Lane,Bloxwich. That’s where my journey began circa 1976

Heres some pics of Birds,D.J Ponsonby and Frans Maas trucks which i took photos of whilst doing my apprenticeship at Keltruck West Bromwich, happy days indeed!!,and also whilst driving for Birds.
e630son my old moter went like a train
Hi Graham did you take that 1 (E630) to the M/E as a seller ?
I’ve often wondered what happened to any of Dockers old motors cos they were cracking tools.
no mate i used to do syria and turkey in it last i saw of it was parked up in birmingham fruit and veg market. spoke to docker 2 weeks ago he only just retiered old bugger. graham

Hi PanchoI worked for them for about 3 years as well, When i started i drove a 142 D668 NOX. Tony did drive E630 SON but i used it a couple of times when hols / service etc. I later drove an Iveco after the scannies had gone, i got lots of photos and as soon as i get them scanned i’ll put them on this thread.
pancho:
Hi bloxotrixIt is a good pic of MSI’s 142, it also brought back some memories for me as i worked for Docker for 3 years.
E630 SON used to be Bobby Shucks motor until Bob had his new 143. I think Tony Whittaker had it after Bob but could be wrong on that ( been a few years ago now). She was a beast, she pulled like a train that 1.
My 142 was D463 OON until i had my 143. I have some photo’s some where of being weekended, normally the Bakehouse or Jayat in France and the picadilly at Santhia or Carrisio in Italy.
How long did you work for Dennis ?
i worked for dennis when he sold all the scanias except e630son doing dts work to turkey good bloke dennis and yes e630son it was a beast nothing could keep up with it i loved the old moter he had a couple of renos and ivecos at the time thay were new but bags of crap regards graham

I remember my motor was in for service so I took E630 to load Sillica sand up near Talke, and it was bound for Porto Marghera near Venice.
What a puller that 142 was, it pulled like a train @ 40 + ton, even better than the 143 450,s best motor on the fleet.
I spoke to Dennis in December about a job doing Spain & Morrocco for Davies Turner but it never happened and the next I heard he had sold up and retired.

Yeh Joe, its good to find a few of the lads you used to work with on here. The Last time I saw you was at Alan’s funeral I think, is it 5 years ago now and have recently been speaking with Blox.(Graham) who I worked with at MSI and had’nt seen him in 20 odd years.
I was in STC about 3 months ago delivering the packaging for the eggs after picking up the trailer from Birkenhead. I’m on for Woodsides now, been there about 2 years but the same as you (time for a change) so looking to see whats about.
If you happen to see Trish remember me to her and see if ya can beg, steel or borrow any of those photos, would be great to see them. Speak lata Joe, pubs calling !!! lol.
Hi Mate. Congrats on the birth of the babb, hope all is fine.
If i remember right, the night Bob and me were in Congorezzo there was some kind of roller skating event going on and you couldn’t walk out of a boozer without nearly getting run over by someone doing about 40 on roller skates.
