Birmingham and black country firms

Hello All
Hughie Jones here, I used to work for Overland many moons ago, Tommy Reid, Ware Transport, Jeavons, have seen my name mentioned on here some time ago…just wondered if anyone is from the old gang is on here? I’m retired still driving my motorhome around Europe, keeps me young at 72!

Hello Hughie, your name rings a bell, I worked for Richard Ford and Bickenhill Transport Services which was Wares & Fordies European set up , I knew all the Ware guys on europe, Nudger, Smakie, Keith Williams, Arthur, Tony Berril, John Adams and a few I’ve no doubt forgot. Cliff.

Hello, no that was Phil the Fireman, is he still there, I keep thinking I see him. Did you work for Wares or Fordie?

What a great thread this has turned into. I remember seeing most of the companies mentioned. One company I looked for was Tipton Transport who provided me with a lot of beer money in the late 70’s.

Me and a mate used to backload from them when the days of handwritten invoices and cash was rife :stuck_out_tongue: We could always manage to find a load back to East Yorkshire without the boss ever knowing. All our outbound work was through my Mother so she could be sweet talked into a late start if we couldn’t get tipped the same day. It could have gone wrong, it never did.

The mention of LOBO and Landfast International still interests me. There was a young lad on Landfast who had a canary yellow Iveco around the same time that Neil had his own Iveco. Neil went on to work for Landfast and was last seen about 5 years ago driving an open transporter for Carlson in Telford.

Can anyone remember who David was? They called him Little David but he was built like a brick vestibule. I think his father may have bought him the truck when he was about 22 and he did Greece with it… When I say young lad, he wasn’t much younger than me :stuck_out_tongue:

You may have run in to ginger Phil then or ratchet gob as he was known, I think he may be doing Garanor now (spelling) you certainly knew if he was on the boat, even if you were shipping Calais and he was in Zeebrugger.

This is the first truck that i got after just passing my class one aged 21 in 1982…

Great pics. lads, keep 'em coming. :sunglasses: I’m loving every minute!
