Birmingham and black country firms

Chris Webb:
Apologies if I’ve put this photo on here before, but I do remember Cameron and Gibbon from Smethwick. It was taken at Aberdeen and the AEC MK3 MM was loaded with shotblast for back home. The driver looks well chuffed and so he should,AECs got a rad blind, only one wiper though but that won’t matter, and he’s got a ■■■ going, ready to set off back home. Two days to get back to Smethwick if it’s got a 6-speed box, three days if a five speed, and (sorry  ) if it was a BRS contract motor with a red and rust driver maybe four days ---------------over to Norm and Harry
One of my favourite pics…

hiya,
Chris five days which would include the obligotary dodgy but possibly manage it in four if you had a pup on the back that would get you down the banks that bit quicker.
thanks harry long retired.

You lot have me “crying” in 'ma dram!!How could I keep track of all the “strokes” you lot pulled? You’d have the Archangel Gabriel swearing if he’d been the Transport manager!!Come on lads which one of you has the “bottle” to start a thread called “All you need to know about Dodgy’s”

Different world then Dennis   , I very often had a dodgy from Scotland as I lived 30mls north of my base and of course I had free parking rights at the Sunset across the road. One night I stopped at the village chippy before I parked up and whilst in the queue in strolls the boss :open_mouth: :open_mouth: " thought you was on a night out tonight Trev" I replied " I am" he just laughed and said no problem just book off anywhere other than your home adress and do us a local in the morning.
I don’t think you’d get that attitude today !

Here are some old firm i use to drive for they was called starr roadways see pic and T Baker and sons.

Found this one on Bubb’s Scrapbook thread, don’t think it has been on before.

Great thread lads… I remember a lot of these old firms…
I remember tipping groupage at Haniel International transport, just off the aston expressway,
also used to tip steel at a firm called Fullers transport in oldbury,
And used to tip steel on the docks at liverpool a lot and always used to see one of Frank Smiths from gomer st, willenhall, red ERFs, think they’re long gone now…

Loving this thread… grew up in (and still live in) Dudley…

Did my work experience from school at Hingleys in 1990, then went straight onto the spanners for Priests in Woodside in 1991. I went over to Adam Jones when they bought out Priests in 1992… didn’t stay long though. Moved to William Round after for a short period before deciding that I didn’t like getting me hands dirty!! Came out of transport for a few years, but returned on agency driver’s mate work and then into the office at ACS&T in Wolves… stayed for 7 years before going off on other projects (running my own tippers etc)… now back in the office for N.R.Evans in Aldridge…

Companys I remember seeing locally…

A. Hingley, Highfield Haulage, Hayward, A.R.Davies (Kingswinford - green/red Scania + DAF flats), JHC (Pensnett - blue Volvo F88’s + Scania with brick trailers), Male and Son (Pensnett - red Leyland tippers - loads of them too!), D.J.Leddington (Pensnett - blue/red Sedd Atki + coiler) T.R.Mitchell (Hartshill/Brierley Hill - red Scania 110 with coal/coke trailer), Barry Birch +J.B. (Hartshill/Brierley Hill - purple F10’s + F86’s), Timmins (Hartshill/Brierley Hill - white motors, DAFs etc), Hudsons (Hartshill/Brierley Hill - black/red Scania heavy haulage), William Round (Hartshill/Brierley Hill - red/white Bedfords, Leylands, Mercs, Dodge furniture vans), R.W. Priest (Woodside - red/yellow/blue Scanias with flats on steel), C.Brown Steel (Woodside - light blue Leyland, Guy, Seddon Atki on steel), W.J.Daniels (Brierley Hill - red/white/blue ERF with curtain trailers), H.Hancox (Thornleigh Trading Estate - two tone green Ford D series tipper, Volvo powder tanks), Round Oak Motor Services (Gornal - red/green Scanias, flats, skips), Robinsons Steel (Brierley Hill - dark blue Daf 2800/Guy Big J4/ Fiat tractors and flats), Jenkins (Tipton - dark blue Leylands etc flats)…

There are loads more that I can remember… will have to put another list together… and some of my photos up!!

Three more which I used to see regularly which still really stand out are Applebys of Wolverhampton… I used to wait on the Pedmore Road to see these pass… 'Mississippi Showboat" was a Scania 141 usually with a bulk tipper in tow. The there was the Danish Bacon Scania fridges that used to always look like they were speeding!! Finally there was a company with a number of yellow and and blue Scanias, 111’s, 112’s etc based on the Thornleigh Trading Estate, their name escapes me right now, but they used to tug brick trailers with cranes on… ring any bells with anyone?

Anybody remember Hickinbottoms off Rolling Mill Street Walsall? I used to backload off them in the 60s,usually out of District Iron and Steel near West Brom’s ground on Holyhead Road, was it Brasshouse Lane? T.Bakers were in there all the time and think they are still going? I think they had some Scania-Vabis units around '67-69.Not that I was jealous as I had a Reiver…
Funny thing is I never saw any of Hickinbottoms wagons running about. We just to ring them when tipped from Sheffield so I don’t know whether they had a fleet or not.

her are some more photos for ya

hiya,
Chris wasn’t Hickinbottoms just a clearing house operation with a bit of warehousing going on i seem to remember a four wheeler doing a bit of collection and delivery but at the time you mention my trips to the Black Country was as rare as hens teeth, but do recall backloading from them used to pull a trombone trailer a lot in those days and was able to manage longish stuff back, always useful.
thanks harry long retired.
