Chris Webb:
Anybody remember Hickinbottoms off Rolling Mill Street Walsall? I used to backload off them in the 60s,usually out of District Iron and Steel near West Brom’s ground on Holyhead Road, was it Brasshouse Lane? T.Bakers were in there all the time and think they are still going? I think they had some Scania-Vabis units around '67-69.Not that I was jealous as I had a Reiver…
Funny thing is I never saw any of Hickinbottoms wagons running about. We just to ring them when tipped from Sheffield so I don’t know whether they had a fleet or not.
hiya,
Chris wasn’t Hickinbottoms just a clearing house operation with a bit of warehousing going on i seem to remember a four wheeler doing a bit of collection and delivery but at the time you mention my trips to the Black Country was as rare as hens teeth, but do recall backloading from them used to pull a trombone trailer a lot in those days and was able to manage longish stuff back, always useful.
thanks harry long retired.
I reckon it must have been Harry.I used them a lot for backloading into Sheffield/Yorks area,Flathers,Dunlop and Ranken,Miles Druce and a steel stockholder in Dewsbury whose name I can’t remember - was it James summat or other?
hiya,
Don’t know the Dewsbury Co but recall once getting a load of 52ft rubber lined pipes “the trailer opened up to about 55ft” i’m sure that was got via a phone call to Hickinbottoms, the load was for that "Chernobyl place"up in ■■■■■■■ it was the 1960s and i still glow in the dark.
thanks harry long retired.

I don’t know Howells RubberD but I remember Electric Avenue at Witton in the 60s.I think Yorkshire Imperial Metals were there or it may have been an extrusion company whose name I can’t recall.
Anybody know what happened to Yorks Imperial Metals, they had their own wagons,I’m sure it was originally called Imperial Metal Industries and they made, amongst a host of other things, shotgun cartridges.

my grandad on my moms side drove a bedford tk artic for IMI out of the Kynoch works in Witton, used to remember him parking his wagon out side his house of a night for a dodgy night out even though he lived up in Stockland Green 5 mins from the factory
GEC were on Electric avenue they run yellow black motors iirc , howells rings abell but cant remember where their yard was
just though both British Leyland/Landrover and Jaguar run their own fleets around Birmingham aswell think they were ergomatic cabbed motors, then went over to the T45 cabbed motors, my dads neighbour used to drive for jaguar between Castle Bromwich and Coventry
i picked up 5 tons of blank shotgun cartridges from yorkshire imperial in 1967 for the i c i quarry in buxton . the only precaution was " keep em dry driver " . i wonder how many lights , notices , escorts you would need now , oh and elf & safety as well . rigsby

Howells transport are still operating from Inkerman st. off Duddeston mill road.
IMI yorkshire metals had works all over the country and ran a large fleet of Seddon Atkinsons, the head office and main works was at Stourton Leeds nr. the container base, at one time I used to collect copper and brass scrap from there and from Kirkby, Dundee and James bridge at Walsall, the Kynoch works at Witton was also one of their big sites.
