Found this pic in an old Ford advert today while going through some old mags.I think that says Sonning on the cab door ,but I could be mistaken.

That’s one of Jack Dance’s fine truck’s, his yard was at the Wee Waif restuarant at Charvil, Sonning phone number, and he had one of the best tipper fleet’s around. Mostly Bedford, but he had a Ford or two. I actually attended his daughter Jackies wedding back in the early 70’s.

Most likley he did Boyze, though there were also gravel pits at Waingels Copse and Tippings Lane which were owned by Hall and Co/Ham River but they closed around the late 60’s/ early 70’s. Jack had a son I think, did he carry the business on I wonder?
Pete.
Does anyone know anything about Moodies transport of Mapledurham? I keep seeing their 8 wheel Leyland Log wagon about (Y reg) but never to get a picture. Wonder why such an old wagon was still in regular use? Last time I saw it was on A4 near Burghfield turn last Friday…
Moodies at Chazey Heath (is that still Berkshire?) were a largish concern when I lived in Reading Nathan, a good many years ago now, and had a few dropside Bedford’s and other makes but I can’t recall what they carried. Their yard still appeared to have an odd vehicle or two in there, some vintage machinery and tractor’s as well I think, but I haven’t been past for a year or so.
Pete.
I’ve seen a Foden 4000 series (M reg or similar age judging from the cab bonnet) of theirs pulling a powder tanker aswell but I see the Leyland a few times a month and it’s in surprisingly good condition. Someone mentioned Hall and Co having a pit, was that the one near Padworth oil terminal, entrance near the lifting canal bridge?
I’ve been in that one a couple of times, Harleyford gravels I think it was last called-was an RMC pit but was sold off following Cemex take-over as it’s output wasn’t high enough apparently. I get into the new Grundon gravel pit at Colthrop quite a bit too-it’s only about 2 years old and is built on the old paper mill site…
While I remember, the Lafarge pit (was Redland) at Woolhampton; it’s finished now but I was one of the last of our drivers to get a load out of there, towards the end the plant was demolished and Raymond Brown put a portable washer in there for about 4 months a year or so while the old haul roads were dug out…
If you mean the Hall and Co pit that I mentioned a couple of posts back they were near Twyford. Turn off of the A4 at the Wee Waif island at Charvil towards Twyford, turn right for Woodley and Land’s End and the pit was on the left by the railway bridge. Their other pit was by Woodley Aerodrome, it was a refuse tip but is now a Country Park.
Pete.
The Padworth one must’ve been a replacement one then Pete. grundons had a pit at Aldermaston Wharf (although called Padworth) that was closed and re-opened for a while but John Stacey used to haul the as dug in from another site;that was where we used to get our “golden flint” from now replaced by Colthrop but this produces what Smiths call “Oxford Blue Flint”…Fancy names for fancy prices

ploughmaster65.Be nice to see them photo`s mate. Bruce is still pulling the pigs with a Scania Topline still in cream and red but I know its only him now. I remember Joe Gray with his fleet of brown cattle trucks had a big yard between Arborfield and Eversley and used to own Fleet Hill Farm. His old yard is still there and Colemans Building Supplies are in there now…
When you say a fleet of Brown cattle trucks, one of them wouldn’t have been a Leyland Octopus & Drag would it? I recall one coming to our sale back in 1966, it was a dark brown 8 wheeler & drag & it sounded lovely. It’d be great to get a photo of that lorry, it was lovely.

A little bit before my time to answer honestly about the Leyland Octopus Wagon and Drag… I remember him having Ergomatic cab and Lad cab Leylands as well as some F88 artics so the chance are it was one of his earlier models.

Fishers - A lot of Blue D series tippers and tar sprayers - Carried out a lot of road surface dressing/chippings - came from The Hanger Station Rd Theale - Same place as M&T finished up and Reading Freight started from.
Also home to Wilson Plant - Green D series and JCB 3cs - did “utility” work before anyone called it “utilities”
Steve
I seem to recall a FISHER from Burghfield who ran grey coloured trucks, perhaps working for the council? That would be in the 1950/60 period though, so maybe the one in Theale was a later version of the same company?
Pete.

Thank’s for that Toshboy, could have been an Amey takeover at some time in the past. My mother has an old Kellys directory of Reading at home dating from the 1956 period, I will have to take a look when I next see her as there will be a few old names lurking there!
Pete.
