Steve

i came across the latest post to this thread via tapatalk on my mobile and thought i’d fire up the old pc for a proper look…well done Boyze, chuffing brilliant!! I remember the old UYC wagons very well as they were the 1st company i ever worked for after leaving school in '83…was driving them in '84 and was still doing the multi drop until 3 years ago. Wot is the reg of the wagon/do u know the driver’s name? We had (if i can remember them) GWS 280N,VGT 625W, EGO 402X,AGF 536W and a few newer ones like A 601/602/603 SGH and a few others that fail me! Some of the drivers that i worked with were Terry Maybanks,Kevin Lee,Tony Heath,Colin Spicer, Brian Wallace and Phil Bennet, who after leaving UYC, started up on his own with Bennets Beers & Minerals on that little trading estate on Hyde End Road that has long sincw been built on. Nice to see Sayers here, when i was a kid, we used to have a guy live a few doors down from us who drove for them and whenever he popped home in his wagon after a Eurorun, i would be stood on the corner dribbling over the shiny truck…James Toland (think surname is correct) was his name, think he still lives local but i’ll ask me mum cuz she knows everything/everybody!! Brian and I passed our class 1’s at a similar time and although i hung on for redundancy (89), he had moved on to work for M&T Haulage over at Theale (Sunnyside,by the pits) driving a 142m pulling a flat for all the steel they pulled for Steelstock at Colnbrook (I think they are now called Reading Freight (Thatcham?) but don’t know if Ralph still owns them) He later went to Marley Tiles (Beenham) driving a F10. Nice to see the Old Scammells as well as my old fella used to work for Shell when they were on the Wokingham Rd but bailed out when they went to Buncefield. Some of his mates were Mick Marks, Keith Hawkins, Jock McKenzie,John Rose and many more that i just cant remember. Used to love going out with him, think i’d have been about 8/10 at the time and remember thinking what a nice motor they were (kids eh,know nothing) until they started getting ERF’s with the Rolls Royce engines…luxury!! Me,well after UYC closed in '89,i went to the Abingdon depot and moved from this area but returned after divorceing 1st wife (who, incidentally worked for Nabisco (Jacobs) on Worton Grange before the Transport side moved to Wigston and the office bods went out to Suttons Park but the only driver i knew was Fran who may still be working for Transhield or wotever it’s called today), 6 years ago when, believe it or not,i am still working for the same company but these days it’s called 3663 and i drive an Actros Megaspace on night trunk to Cannock and our depot is on…Worton Grange where Nabisco used to be!! (i just had to come back home, being born n bred in Shinfield!!) Looks like (hopefully) i will be ending my driving days 100yds from where i started it!! Stobbies moved out from the old UYC place last year somtetime as the brewery work was drying up and as for Hollis Tpt,think they were bought out by K&N (maybe wrong) years ago and think JWQ just went to the wall. QTR do a fair bit for us as well. What about AG Nelhams (think) that were based around the back of Adwests or very nearby, could see the wagons from the bakery.I’m sure i’ve missed plenty out but i can’t type as fast as my brain remembers and by the time my typing has caught up,the thought has faded!!

Boyze:
Great pictures Steve… Didnt Zanya have the Vodaphone contract and was an off shot of Hollis Transport■■?? I remember Stuart Looby used to drive the Ford Cargo and Dean ? drove the Volvo... I drove a Daf 2800 for Hollis when Fraser Guy was on holiday and had a night out with Dean in Transmark... Nigel Bromham..... Didnt he have some tippers at some point with old Brian Prodbury (Hadleys)… Seem to remember Trevor Heath (Chesters son) driving one■■?

Hi Boyze - i’m not sure if Zanya were ■■■■■■■ with Hollis at the start but they certainly ended up in their yard - Podbury & Bronham - greeny yellow Freighter and Constructor(s)
As Actrosman mentioned Nabisco/Jacobs…

Steve

Great photos again Steve. The little Leyland Terrier… What a truck they were… I remember Staysures old one with the little Hiab on which they kept on the road until a few years back… I had a Clyesdale skip truck for Hadleys when I first started that used to fly but sadly never got any pictures of it… Went on the old Freighter after that but it wasn`t half the truck… Better cab but that was about it…
Actrosman.
Glad you like the photos and that it bought back some good memories for you… I dont know the reg as the photos where put on by neversweat1. I rememeber Bennets Beer & Minerals and all the old transport firms fro Hyde End Road are gone now. You are right, Reading Freight are now in Colthrop and I think Ralph (or Shaggy) is still running it. Im really surprized that no photos of M & T Haulage have made it on here because there wagons always stood out in the green and white colours and somebody somewhere is bound to have some in there loft!! Another company was Hunter & Parr that was in Toutley Road Wokingham that was one of the first to run Fiat artic units with flat trailers… Same old story though, nobody really carried cameras back then. I was asked earlier on about a James that used to park his lorry at Beenham or Thatcham and it could possibly be the James Toland that you talk of… Maybe daf3300 will remember. I remember the old shell place along the Wokingham Road and the only name I remember from there was the old foreman Mr .Foye who lived in Wokingham… Left the same time as your dad and ended up working his retirement out on the car park gate in Waitrose Wokingham. 3663 had a depot up Acre Rd and the only bloke I know there was Eddie Turner who I work with on the continent for North American if you remember him. I pulled a few trailers for AG Nelhams at about the time he was into the truck racing with his Ford Transcon… I think he just run out of money in the end and give it all up… Anyway… Good to have you back local again…

hello boyze
i am back in the swing of things not been to well , the only james i remember and i could be totally wrong didnt a james for grains park in a laybye at beenham ?,all those pictures steve keeps posting it no wonder they had a truck for 2 days to do a service on he should have had a spanner in his hands not a camera    , i may have mist this earlier but who was the mob with blue KM’S from near sutton seeds i have the name IDEAL in my head i may need more medication

Sorry to hear you’ve not been well Paul :frowning:
The KM’s wouldn’t be Ideal Casements would they ■■ Also from Suttons end of town was Lebus with demount TK’s.

Steve

thats the mob i was thinking of steve IDEAL CASEMENTS never could catch them i knew 3 of the drivers john parr his brother and his dad all worked there , and who could forget lebus from woodley with there sleeper tk,s    , in the early eighties we had about 6/7 drivers leave and they all went there , and the last time i saw a nelhams was about late nighties it was chris rigby he used to work at jwq

Hi Boyze, thats the wrong James, the one i knew actually worked for Sayers. I know ‘James for Grains’ had a few of the ERF’s based on (wot would now be) Hithercroft Ind Est in Wallingford at the old mill or granary or wotever it was!! As said, Ralph does run Reading Freight, was checking out their web site the other day, might give him a tinkle/mail-shot to see if he has any M&T pictures that he could pass on. My mates Scanny was a 142m with twin stacks, all the shiny stuff outside, frilly stuff inside. Another driver i forgot when i was at UYC was Tony Greenaway…last see him about 5/6 years ago, on for Hanson, loaded up with Tarmac on the A4 at Calcot but wasn’t in a position to stop n chat.

Was talking to one of our other night drivers y’day, mentioned this forum, asked a couple of questions and it turns out he used to work for Coff’s…any of u guys worked there or know anybody that remembers (or wishes not to be reminded of!!) a certain Brian Knight?? Worked there for about 5 and a half years. He did mention a few names and loads of problems that they had with the trucks but i’ve been asleep since then so i cant remember anything

daf3300.
Sorry to hear you aint been well mate… Hope all is well now buddy… The James for Grains lorries where mine and we were contracted out of Reading Brewery, Bristol Brewery, Mortlake and Ovaltine at Kings Langley… We used to park at Calcot which is built on now and then they let us park in Reading Brewery… I drove one, my brother on the other and Terry Westwood drove the eight wheeler… There were a few drivers who came and went but it was mostly us three… I will sort out some photos and put them on here to jog your memory…
Actrosman
The James lorries would have been us tipping at Paul Malt… Had quite a few nights out there… Would be good to see some of M & T pictures… At the start of the forum there is a picture of a Leyland Bison for Harry Coff and if you look closely im pretty sure that Brian is driving it… I have the original at home and he is more than welcome to a copy…

Great photos again Steve… Nice to see my old tipper when she was new… Jack Turner had 199 first and then went to Rocket Ron… I cant remember who had 198 before me but when I took over the artic Mick Preistley (vicar) had it… Where were they taken■■?

Not sure if you are interested to compair the old with the new as our yard (Cobleys) is next door to reading freight in Colthrop and obviously on the same plot as Hadleys. I could, when im there next (not sure when tho) get some pics… Sorry to intrude if not interested!

My old F10… Just loaded in Bristol Brewery.

Steve

Ref : Boyze’s post on page 2 about Simon Sayer Falkland Haulage… These are a few pictures i have from a mate of mine who used to drive for Syms of calne, of Simon Sayer when he used to sub for Syms…

Hello everyone and how are you?? At long last I’ve scanned in three pics of a Simonds ERF. This Lorry is a Tug and used to pull a drawbar trailer and it dates from the 1930’s era (I’m not sure exactly when). It was restored by Courages and sat in The Berkshire Brewery, Reading. I took these shots in 1993 and as now the brewery has shut I wonder what happened to it? Does anyone know?

hello terry long time no chat , nice pictures very professional black and white , i would say its about 36/37 as i have some pics of old man and his and that has same cab ,also could you p, m me your phone number as a lot as happened
