Brand new Scammell Routemans all ready to go.
boyzee, what was the company in thatcham i think red units james ■■?
daf3300.
You got me with that one mate… The only red trucks I can remember are:
Eggletons. (before they were took over by Raymond Brown)
C & B Haulage. ( after they moved from Hermitage)
James Cook. (he is now in Fleet with cream & red trucks).
There were quite a few owner drivers who used to park over there who were on for Thermilites and Marleys so it may have been one of them.
Mo (mad cabbage) used to live in Thatcham and used to leave his old Meakins F10 over there but that was red & white.
hello boyzee the name JAMES CLARK came to me ?
boyzee you know dave meakins who was the ugley big fitter he had
Ha Ha… That would be butch then!!! I cant remember his real name but he was Daves missis brother.. I dunno what happened to old Butch when Dave wound the transport up, I know Dave and his boy Richard still work out of the the old workshop doing a bit of fitting.. Next time I see Dave I
ll ask him… All the other boys if you remember any of them:
Mo… Moved to South Wales and started working for W.F Halls out of Pembroke.
Bob Coventry… Followed Mo to South Wales a couple of years after Mo.
Kenny Smith… Went on for Courages at Thatcham.
Dusty Miller… Went on for Johnny Mould.
Me… Went back on for James & Son out of Reading Brewery…
BUTCH thats him and i know ken worked with him on jwq, and ernie white , , he had to drag me out of the forcourt one when i was on burmah , did bob coventry have a brother that worked on m&t,
Old Kenny was a good old boy, always moaning bless him, if he was out on tautliner he wanted to pull the tipper and when on the tipper wanted the tautliner!!
Ernie White was a name I had forgotten about I remember he had that white Daf 2800 and was pulling hoggin out of Redlands, Caversham and running to Walton on Thames with us… Do you remember Rosco who had the 8 wheeler 2500 Daf who was good mates with Ernie??
That was Bob`s cousin, Martin I think his name was, who worked on M & T. He ended up driving a pale blue livestock transporter out of somewhere near Andover… A Merc wagon & drag with a number plate on the front with Pig Pen on it!!!
HELLO THERE, firstly thanks very much for setting up this forum, ref. BERKSHIRE COMPANIES. Well, the one i can’t see is J.W.Q. Transport. I and my dad worked there,(Terry and Pete Lewis), they had 3 depots, Reading, Sheerness and Swindon. I’ll post a few pics on this forum A little later, but if anyone would like to see more, put JWQ TRANSPORT in the forums search engine and there’s 6 pages of JWQ.
When Dave Meakin packed up he got Butch a job at TLS - he’s now at the Iveco dealer Grays at Theale.
Steve
TautlinerTerry.
Hello Terry I have been reading the JWQ Transport thread and there are some great pictures on there and if you want to post some on here as well your more than welcome. I never really had any dealings with JWQ but remember seeing the motors (always liked the Dafs) and remember them moving into Woodley about the time I was pulling trailers for Lin-Pac and doing the odd bit for Nelhams… There was a bloke who came onto Hadleys who said he had worked for JWQ called Colin Ockwell but I could`nt tell you when or for how long he was on there.

Good to hear that old Butch is still about… That ground TLS are on belongs to Dave aswell as the diner… Fancy Iveco taking Butch on, he was always good with a spanner but was always chasing parts girls about!!!

Our paths must have crossed a few times over the years then as Sunday dinnertime in the Royal Oak was a must back in the day when Mick Fry was the landlord, there where more wagon drivers in there than Lymm Truckstop!! Some names you may remember from the pub:
Micky Dance (tipper operator) Frankie Cracknell (Hadley skip driver) Mick Bailey (Marks & Spencer driver) Lucky John (Thermilite then Parcelforce) Peter Coff (tipper operator) Steve & Mark Raymond (Foster Yeomans tippers) Jake ? (Mouldies then got his own mixer)
There was always a good bunch in the oak and I spent far to much time in there after work and at the weekends, spending the missis housekeeping… Good days!!
Last time I saw Ernie was when I picked up the Crane barrel body bulker that Dave bought off him back in the ninties!!! Rosco could well be his son in law, his first missis used to drive the lorry as well but I never knew her that well.
I cant recall Graham Chiverton… Where his trucks painted dark & light blue??
Grahams Renaults were white with a blue band and red chassis - chrome wheel trims & bull bars - pulled out of Blackbushe metals quite a lot
I think he lived in Yateley before moving - i never saw him without his cap on - i think his boy drove as well
Mick Dance runs his brother Steve’s transfer station at Sonning eye - he was in charge of the yard at Meakins builders merchants for quite a while.
I know Frank Cracknell from Hadleys - bit of a miserable b###er i always thought
Steve
