Now a change a 1950s o type i think 5 ton van of Quaker, we once had a driver called Quaker man who looked like that. Interesting the way the rear wheels have been enclosed

FS And EM Wood, local hauliers for local people!
Those AWD TL lookalikes are pig ugly
Where I was working in the 60s we had several S types and the one I had was only fitted with a short bumper, I don’t know if a full one was an “optional extra” but it was an early one that I drove,1953 model I think, petrol engined too.
I didn’t work for this bloke but he ran Bedfords of all shapes and sizes including a TK 6-wheel unit that pulled a tandem trailer. This was back in the late 60s, and when I tell some people this they don’t believe it. Anyway here’s one of his early S types.

Yeah I remember S Types with that short bumper, but the same as you I don’t know why.
One from the Isle of Man last year.
Didn’t quite know where to post this shot but I think this is the place! I would be about 14 when I took this photo of this Wearing Bros.S type which was parked off Castle St. in Kendal circa a Saturday 1961.It was driven by a pal of mine Arthur Wilson who would be about 22 at the time.He had just come down from Glasgow with these 2 heavy and wide plates ex McKelvie. They were for Walkers in Bolton and being on holiday the following week I went with him on the Monday,I remember we re-loaded at Tate & Lyle in Liverpool off Silver Roadways with 10 ton of sugar for a Wholesale grocer in Kendal.Wearings ran 3 or 4 motors on “A” licence mainly subbing for Robsons of Carlisle, they ran a number of quarry tippers also. They sold the “A” licence side of the firm in 1963 to Davy & Co Grange who traded as K.Fell & Co the firm I bought out in 1976 when I ran Bewick Transport, funny old world as they say!!! Back to the photo, the SType Bedford(or Big Bedford) had a Leyland 350 or 375 engine,4 speed G/box and an Eaton 2 speed axle. The motor just behind was one of James Croppers 6wheeler Seddon flats with a Leyland 400 engine and it would have been almost new when I took this shot.It was driven by another old friend of mine Colin Veevers who in 1968 got the first Steel cabbed 32/4 RR tractor that Croppers bought and he parked in the same place!

Very evocative picture there Dennis, a real working motor, no time to fix the missing bumper, temporary home for the number plate on the top grill, “A licence” work - always loaded. What about the tiny mirrors (I still have one somewhere) no indicaters, hand signals only. The one I had wasn’t even fitted with stoplights. Those entry steps behind the wheel soon rotted away and had to be replaced. I see it had a radio, sheer luxury, I made do with a Dansette portable transister but could only hear it whilst stationary.
I didnt realise that so much of ■■■■■■■ was part of Lancashire in those days (I googled it to find out), we were once Suffolk but became Norfolk around 1974, without moving house of course. Regards, Haddy.
On Gt.Yarmouth quay, taken by Mr. Jack Harrison. The timber sheds on the opposite side of the river are Jewsons.
Drove a few A & S types in my early days, but only ran this one when I was running my own. Bought it as a run about as it was getting on a bit, but it often got pushed into service down the road and performed very well. Only ever stopped once when engine suffered terminal decline! but stuck a second hand lump in and away she went again! (name on headboard of previous owner was painted out, but cheap paint peeled off!)

This was a “little gem” of a motor,a KE 10 ton GVW I bought new in March '70 for my 17year old brother to drive. We used to put 7/8ton onto its 17ft Ali platform! We had it specced up with Tecalemit autolube,5 speed box and 45 gal coach tank.It was shod on 8.25 X 17 Michelin X tyres,a cracking little motor, ran like a sewing machine the 330 engine!!and the 5 speed box just “geared” it up that bit more.
This is a shot of a TK we ran a number of years later, obviously at this time we were running circa 60/70 artics so this motor didn’t have a regular driver, just used as run about among the Big’uns,I used to drive it a bit my-self IIRC!!
This is a rear end shot of the TK and shows the Houghton Parkhouse 16ft platform in some detail.Houghtons were/are without doubt probably the finest builders of Cattle containers and platforms in the UK.I had quite a number of platforms and 3 horse boxes built by them over the years. All their bodies were built to their standard specs,no bodging or improvising with them, everything was thought through carefully and what you got was the “dogs” everytime!! You can tell at a glance if it is a Houghton cattle box as everything is just so,time and time again!
A couple more the Bedfords first a nice conversion on a ex military MK to a artic tractor for i think the Moscow state circus amd a nice shot of a A type tractor and semi trailr of Coward brothers
This one came from Kev Challenger who is a member on here, although I cross-linked it from a site about Collins Parcels in Walsall Wood
I didn’t know they ran these TKs.
