Become a lorry driver they said

If you earn £8.91,you would need to work 78 hours to get £700 or 62 hours if he is paying time and a half after 45 hours.
Its all very well but someone working at mcdonalds could do the same.

Yep…who tf in their right minds want to work 78 hours a week in this day and age…especially at same rate right through. :unamused:
Answer…Those who constantly tell us they are on ‘‘good money’’ without thinking about it.:unamused:

This is from 2017 , £8.90 ph , £700 pw = £35 k , so fougers 11 .14 ph must be £40k + , is £40’k +’a bad wage , I guess a lot of factory workers on 20 k ( I’ve looked lately & seems average ) would think twice there wage was good

I was a factory worker in the late 90s, on forklifts. That’s precisely why I did my HGV. Plus I was sick of being out getting ■■■■ wet through tipping people, while looking at a long queue of wagons, all with the night heaters on and tellies on the dash. More money for less work, right?

Then I found out about the 15 hours on with 9 hours off thing, and how to “save time” by tipping off the card etc etc etc. Oh dear.

Minimum wage going up to £10.42 (9.7% rise from 2022) shortly.

Oh dear, 2 steps up the ladder then we land on a snake. Might be time for the weak spine crew to start saying no…

We should be on 40k for 40 hours old bean, you are the problem not the cure.

two ways of looking at all this. 1) compare hourly rate at the same shift 2) ease of job.

back in 2017 to use dozy’s wage slip i was on the same hourly rate working in a morrisons rdc picking ambient goods. we had to pick 180 items an hour with all the crap that went with the voice operated picking system. thats 1 item every 20 seconds. would i rather be sitting in a warm lorry looking at my phone or driving from point a to b you bet your bottom dollar.

And another one who’s alright Jack thank you very much.

And this is why things will never change, when you take the same rate as a picker so you can sit on your arse all day knocking out 15 hours.

The funny thing is with a bit of skin in the game, if I had to take the same rate of £8.90 as per your example and I can do 0600-1400 in one job or in the other example 0600 until god knows when, I’d take the guaranteed finish time of 1400, you bet your bottom dollar.

Your suggesting trampers park up for 16 hrs a day , that’s just daft

No I would suggest that they get paid more after their 40 hours a week.

actualy if you read my post you would of realised that i was working in the warehouse not driving a lorry. The point i was making was that its what motivated me to get off my arse and get my class 2 and get a 7.5 tonne job at alot better money. Then when i got confident with that i went for a class 2 job at even better money then got my class 1 and now earn nigh on 50k a year doing 4 12 hour shifts.

thing with the morrisons work was they had flex time so you might be down to do a 9 hour shift but they could make you work another 2 provided they gave you 4 hours notice. plus i was on a 6 on 2 off contract so i could effectivly do 12 days straight with out a day off which happened alot.

Our company had a retention bonus. Everyone thought it had been scrapped as the paperwork for it was taken down yet they renewed it for another year which was a surprise. They also revamped the self tip bonus so anything that requires me to use a pump truck is extra. This is a big firm so they are obviously still wanting to keep drivers.

The shortage in these kind of jobs will only get worse as time goes on. You can see it with all the strikes. All essential jobs but so many lazy people just want WFH jobs. Eventually essential jobs will go up and up till demand is met. It is fine handing out licences but how many of those people will stick at it.

Lorry driving isn’t for everyone. The agency rates dropping has got nothing to do with new drivers but more to do with the incoming recession. I deliver food and there is no shortage of work in that area.

The pay I get is actually fantastic if the hours were sociable. Like today I did a 10 hour shift. Only ten minutes delay on the 25 today and all tips were fast and efficient. Go back to yesterday and I had a 13 hour day because I had to wait 1 hour for paperwork to be signed and lost 1 hour on the M25 and Erith because I got caught up in rush hour traffic.

If the government got on top of tip times especially at RDC’s everyone would be happy. Make it mandatory for drivers to be tipped in a certain time frame. Hold companies responsible. 4+ hours to unload a trailer is unacceptable.

There is, and never has been, a shortage of lorry drivers. There’s only ever been a shortage of good lorry drivers willing to work for minimum wage.

So what were these drivers who refuse to work for this rate doing ? If they were sat at home twiddling there fingers refusing to do the jobs your right , but I suspect they were out working , so there was a shortage of drivers to do those jobs
I stand to be corrected but I’m sure tesco were offering retention / joining bonuses , pay rises , yet toonsy says he on 52k pa ,40 odd hours

Tesco offered a “driver retention bonus” of approx £50/week gross for about a year,
finished Summer 2022.
FT agency drivers got it too.

Thought so, only been there delivering in a van so could throw most of the stuff off to hurry them up, but have heard they can be a real nightmare unloading trailers.

That’s my neck of the woods, I’m about half an hour away, deep in the Rhondda
