Back from Afghan?

It seems every time i go down the A34 or along the M27 i see a convoy of either military or civilian low loaders with armoured vehicles on, which i presume are being brought back from Afghanistan. Anybody know where they are all going ?. There must be a hell of a lot of them somewhere.

Before each vehicle is shipped back to the UK or flown back,it takes 24 hours to clean each vehicle.
There are bacteria, pathogens and disease in Afghan that can decimated UK agriculture.
They can pick up seeds and berries while operating out there.Animal blood from road kill.
When you see the convoys in the UK,you would think a war has started.

I don’t know where there going but I bet America wishes it had brought all it armoured vehicles back now that the Iraq insurgents are using them.

They used to store a lot of kit at Ashchurch nr Tewksbury, dont know if they still do .
Went in there on a school trip once in the mid 70s and there was everything from motorbikes to tanks, quite an interesting
place.

Ashchurch still has loads of vehicles there. Used to pick up new vehicles from there in 90s and went passed it yesterday. Still a lot in there

Short answer would be all over the place!

The vehicles get shipped back over and then either low loaded or driven back to their home units.

Can be like ‘Wacky Races’ when the boat pulls in with green kit flying everywhere!

Chattin to a guy that picked up at Ashchurch he did say a lot of the newkit gets shipped out to Canada and the USA where they have and do a lot of training old stuff get stripped and a fair whack gets sold in bulk to other countries that cant afford new kit much like our ships and aircraft.

MOD at Bicester, the logistics depot there does a lot with vehicles returning from overseas.

They dismantled camp bastion which was, wait for it…

I thought it was Reading

They hide it in various places as they don’t like the public seeing just how much has been spent/deployed on it. As above the phrase I heard for Camp Bastion was a tent city the size of Bath.

Allegedly after the first Gulf War they pushed loads into the sea but they aren’t allowed to do that any longer and even something like an empty ammo box is viewed as military kit and isn’t allowed to be left with a scrap metal dealer out there without being crushed first.

They do dispose of it in job lots through the surplus outfits but they quickly saturate the market. Bear in mind vehicles themselves are the tip of the iceberg there will be insane amounts of other kit too.

When the first Gulf War kicked off I was in the TA and we loaded a hell of a lot of gear from Marchwood and after the kick off we unloaded masses of it too, we took some photos (film in them days lol) and out of hundreds only about twenty photos turned out, we had our own conspiracy theories :open_mouth:
Most as shipped in and out of the port on trains.

I have noticed a lot of military convoys the last week or two, and all in green so not Gulf stuff…more conspiracy theories… :open_mouth:

I have to say the last week

I presume a lot of the vehicles used over there wouldn’t necessarily be of much use in other environments so I wonder what they will do with it all.

It’s amazing given his other ■■■■ ups that Gordy Brown ever signed the cheques for this stuff! He was pretty tight with other items such as helicopters I believe…

In other news our shiny new super carrier is being launched next week, something for the UK to be proud of.

Arr but he’s got no planes…?..

Indeed.

Well, nowt a well placed thermonuclear device wouldn’t sort out that is.

Haha , hardwick is a nice place

our armed forces went into afghanistan as one of the worst equipped ground forces, but they are coming back as well equiped as the americans (infact better as a lot of the kit is american based but modified to be better by the british  )

All the yanks left in iraq was the humvees which were being replaced by the new up armoured vehicles anyway.

The yanks even shipped back to the states the up armoured international units we used for convoys out the with kbr. Also some of the merc actros and volvo’s they fitted up armour kits to are back in the states and ther using them at some big training area nr california.
