Astran / Middle East Drivers

Not taking the mick Geoff, if you know anything different about any of the topics on this thread over the last six and a half years and one hundred and fifty two pages then why dont you tell us about it. If people dont post anything then there is nothing to read.
Good luck with the move.

Gule Gule.

On the topic of engine transpants when I drove for MAT we had a 110 with a Perkins V8 lump. It could not pull a greasy stick out of a cows a*** but the thing went like a rocket but at times during slow manouvers the engine would stall resulting in a mad lunge for the started button. It was on a contract from Perkins to Belgrade with built up engines and returned with cast engine blocks. We also had a Leyland Boxer with a V6 Perkins as well, it would not pull your cap off.

Bloody ell Steve lighten up I m talking about fictious transit times and fictious destinations. Hans Christian Anderson wrote better tales than some of these, go and have a few 4xxxx mate catch you later.Carlc remember meeting quite a few of your lads at Fernetti all with non sleeper cab Scanias but at least you had couchettes. regards Crow.

Oh yea Geoff, I still donā€™t believe how those two F Troop drivers got to the Moon before that Dutchman  .

Hullo Steve,
I heard about that too. When they got there before the Dutchman got there, there was a Brit already parked up. He couldā€™nt get tipped because he hadā€™nt got a Permit. It was a Prat of a place anyway, what with all those bloody Angels sitting on the clouds and strumming away on them Harps all night long, you got no kip at allā€¦
Cheers, Archie.

Hullo Geoff,
Yes there are. One day I was chatting to this Brit Driver that had been waiting for the Permit, he told me that one day when St.Peter came out for a walk around, he asked him that same question. St.Peter said, yes of course there are some of them here, you see that high brick wall over there ? well we keep them behind that. Why do you do that ? said this Brit Driver. St. Peter looked at him, smiled and said, Thats because they think theyā€™re the only f*****s up here.
Whoops! Iā€™ll get me coat on, shall I ?. Cheers, Archie.

A while ago on here I asked if anyone knew of Kights of Old on the middle east run as a very good friend of mine was on for them in the 70s, Ive just had a trip back to the UK last month and met up with my old friend, sadly on the day I returned to Canada he passed away after a short illness. His name was Bill Sallis if any of you old timers remember him, he lived in Liverpool.
I got talking about an article on Chris Hooper from a mag in the early 90s, to which he said he used to run the middle east himself, a few weeks later he brought all his old pics in for me to see, Id asked him a few years ago for them to post em on here but he couldnt find them, his son has since found them and has sent me a few to post on here (cheers Hughie) for you all to see. Bill was a top bloke and Im proud to of had him as a close friend for the last 20 yrs, who helped me no end at the start of my driving career, even though he was ill he made the effort to have the afternoon out for a few beers and it was just as much entertainment as it was 20 yrs ago  there was never a dull moment being in his company. A loving husband, dad, grandad & great grandad who will be very much missed indeed by all who knew him.
RIP Old Pal.

Bills F89

He was doing some internal work moving 3 caravans, only 2 would fit in the trailer so just hook the 3rd onto the back of the trailer

The rear caravan decided to go its own way somewhere out in the desert  so Bill had to go and find someone to weld the tow ball all back up.
His son does have more pics of this being done along with some others which I`ll post on here when I get them.

Anyone know any of these chaps in this pic ?

Many Thanks again Hughie for sending me the pics for all to see on here.
Cheers
Neal

Iā€™ll resize the pics once I get internet on my laptop, canā€™t work this phone properly yet or feel free to do it for me if any of you know how

The Scania looks ex Promotor?

Hello Neal, I am sure that like myself there are a few lads on here who send their condolences to Hughie and the rest of Bills family. Although I never knew Bill itā€™s always sad when I hear that yet another one of the older fellows has passed away, you canā€™t remember all the peoples names who you met over thirty years ago but seeing one of Bills photos does start the old grey matter to thaw out a bit. So thanks to you and to Hughie for posting them and lets hope that you can find some more.

I did ask on the Old Sussex haulers thread a few years ago (on page one or two) if anybody knew a guy called Lawrence from Hastings. Well if I am not mistaken he is the guy on the left with black trousers and I think he drove that Brighton Van Hire Transcon. The guy next to him could well be Dave who drove for Eric Vick from Gloucester and the guy with the beard is somebody who I remember seeing a few times and might even be the Promotors driver. I wouldnā€™t be surprised if that photo was taken in 1981.

Regards Steve.

The Scania looks like M&C fleet coulors out of Tiptree then Braintree

No Allan, definately not, Mervynā€™s 111 and 141 never had headboards and were also the later model with the headlights cab mounted, not bumper, so i assume the one in the pic is either a 110 or 140 ?

Steve.

I would put my money on Pro-Motor

it says Pro Motor on the headboard.

Changing the subject slightly, when I was a kid I grew up near the whitetrux yard in Aylesham nr Canterbury,Their trucks always amazed me with the countries they went to written on the trailers. Our little gang used to sit for hours outside the gates waiting to see the trucks coming and going .
How did they compare to Astran ? As in What were they like to work for ? were they a smaller company than Astran ?
I"ve read long haul pioneers and watched destination Doha both absolutely brilliant !!!
