I ran with Barney mid 70âs when he lived in Holland, were you with him when he had battery probs: in the Londra on the way home ? I was helping him out and he finally got sorted at Aidens, on that trip we stopped for a nosh somewhere before Kapic and he was parked behind me and having a cook-up when this Arab appeared at my cab and asked if I knew Barney, it took me a while to realise that it was him donned up in his Arab attire and I fell for it although I donât suppose I was the first or the last
I met up with him a few times after that and that is the way that our job went, you seem to meet up with the same faces almost every trip, the last time I rubbed shoulders with him was in the Belgrade National, it was soon after that that I heard that he had disappeared off of the face of the earth so where are you Snipe â â Regards Fred
Hi Fred.No it wasnât me.I first met Barney in early 74 in Italy.Strangely we were both tipping ex ME,him for Collintors,me for Astrans. He was with the 'âbossâ'Jason Vick,he had a F88,Jason had a Scania[i think 140]so he was the man.In about 1977 i was surprised to meet him in Rotterdam when we were loading for ME.I was working for Afghan int and Barney was also driving a Dutch motor[i think it was a daf, blue white and red]He always talked about going to USA,so i also asked on the expats site,to no avail. As i have said on different occasions it would be nice to know where people are now and how their life has gone.Mike

Jimmy and I were good mates and go back along way .At one time he had neither an Hgv OR an O licence and ran on GLP s .After a falling out with GLP he ran on ours and worked out of our yard at Radcliffe near Bury my wife Susan found his loads and did his paperwork. Popularly known as Jimmy the Wig amongst his mates this is a tragedy not only have we lost Susan but now Jimmy as well life can be cruel .Ah well just keep going with your head down regards Crow

Well Geoff, I am really baffled now as to where I took that photo, itâs defo not Greece and the road and houses look too good for Yugo.
I think we can rule out Italy and Besses Of The Barn so it might of been somewhere in France, who knows, I donât .
Regards Steve.
You are correct mushroomman it most definitely is not Besses o th Barn you must be a local lad to know where that is . I can only think that it is somewhere in France possibly across the road from the world famous Bakehouse iwould have come thru the Blanc if you were not transitting France then i m at a loss maybe me bruv Tony can thrw some light on it or my only o0ther friend Al Z Heimer// cROW
Well done Sherlock I can see where you are coming from. The view across the road from The Bakehouse looks very similar if not spot on. Maybe thats why I took the photo in the first place as it seemed to be unusual to see a low loader on itâs way back from The Middle East with a Middle East Minerals unit on the back.

Now Mr Crow can you solve another 24 year old mystery for me .
Back in 1988 I remember seeing parked up in a small yard in Ramsbottom a unit and trailer with a belly tank and side lockers which was livered up ZIRCON INTERNATIONAL or ZIRCON MIDDLE EAST.
I had never heard of or ever saw it again but hopefully somebody on here might of seen it or know something about it.
Come on guys put your thinking caps on.
B.T.W. Geoff, seeing the names Corrigan and Chamberlain in the same sentence really made me chuckle for some reason .
Regards Steve.

the ZIRCON unit and trailer .
was it deffo ramsbottom it was parked up in ?
i remember seeing an F88/9 parked with trailer in a yard that look like a small holding type of place but it was more haslingden than rammy , you know over the top road through holcombe brook .
dont remember the zircon name though .
Hello Bowser, yep it was in Rammy. In fact I have just done a Google Earth search to see if the yard is still there and surprise, surprise, it just happens funny enough to be on Crow Lane .
With the equipment that they have got now it looks like they might be running to the South Pole .
Mushroomman I remember Zircon they only did Italy Zircon as a learned man like you will know is asemiprecious stone and i seem to think they imported fairground type junk from Italy ithink the owners name was Frank something they had 1 scania and the driver was another Geoff not me he lived in Edenfield which is where they operatea from on the top road to Rochdale via Owd Betts hopr this helps Crow
Hello Geoff, I donât suppose that you could fossick around and find the name of the Greek/Cypriot guy from Prestwich who had a few trucks running down to the Middle East in the seventies/ early eighties. I asked this question a few years ago and nobody came back with an answer, I do remember that Dave Hammond did a couple of trips for him in the early eighties.
Regards Steve.

freshir wrote :-Now there is a name from the past Alan Altug wow, he operated from the old Isleworth film studios near Twickenham and another old mate of mine Frank Willis (RIP) used to pull for him - Frank had two DAFâs 28 a 22 (yuck) and the 22 was driven by Pete Burgess, now that should nudge a few memories for the older jockeyâs, Regards Fred
Freddy Noble used to talk to Me about Alan Altug. I think Mickey Willis is Frank Willisâs son, He still has a lorry as does F Noble esquire.
This is Fred. I think Mrs Fly sheet fancies Him deep downâŚ
