Theres no exam as such to pass or fail, its just to say you’ve attended the required time of training  .

The one question that cannot be answered -
How many attending that course can be certain that they have assimilated the knowledge correctly ?

And one other point - how do we KNOW that the info being given by the trainer is correct when the governing body (JAUPT) does not check the validity of the course content  :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

who gives a [zb], as long as they do 35hours all good … over here in Australia you dont even have to have a medical to drive a class one just a MC which is 2 trailers.

The thread is 3 years old and ROG still manages to be contentious lol

JAUPT do check the course content (didn’t use to). Just lately it’s become a right pain to get courses approved. Apparently they have ‘specialists’ on their books now.

Rog says

If your employer is paying for the time you are on the course then it’s other work
If your employer just pays for the course then it’s not other work.

You are wrong again Rog and Zippy is right

As a DCPC trainer I was approached by a local firm to run courses at their premises for their drivers.
They wanted to do them at the end of a shift for 7 hours or on a Friday afternoon after finishing a shift for 3.5 hours and complete the other 3.5 hours early on Saturday morning.
The Firm were paying me for the training but the drivers were NOT being paid for their time.

I was uncomfortable about the legality of this and it took me almost a fortnight to get the definitive answer.
I emailed JAUPT…no reply.
I phoned JAUPT…they said email the DSA
I emailed the DSA…they said ring the CPC Hotline.
I rang the CPC Hotline…they said email VOSA .
I emailed Vosa…no reply.
I phoned VOSA…they wasn’t sure in the office, but gave me the mobile numbers of 2 enforcement officers to ring for the definitive answer.
I rang the enforcement officer and Hallelujah, he gave me an answer.

Because the firm is expecting the drivers to take advantage of the training, and because it is on the same premises that they are employed, IT IS CLASSED AS OTHER WORK

I tried all the ‘yes but’ arguments all to no avail, and there was no doubt in their minds that it would be classed as other work.

Hope this helps.

Pat

It doesn’t help because all you have there is the opinion of one man in VOSA - and they are often wrong.

Paid for and a day in lieu :grimacing:

Good !
It might get trainers to have the correct information to hand for the courses they are training on. What’s the point of a training course on say Hours Rules and Tachograph Regulations for LGV Divers, when the trainer on this course doesn’t know the Hours Rules and Tachograph Regulations for LGV Divers. As a result of not knowing the subject the trainer gives incorrect information. A driver could then fall foul of the law due to complying with the rules as erroneously explained by a useless trainer.
Surely the whole point of this training is to improve drivers knowledge.

When I did mine my trainer, said on the day while doing paper work before the course started that if any one hear is been paid to be here and the firm is paping then its counted as othere work, one of the trainees said, what if your not but you have to attened, he said if your employer is making you take the course is other work even if your not been paid, he asked him how he knows this well he says it was brought up at a meeting with RTITB the consortium put it to vosa

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has had any success in asking their workplace to contribute or pay for the CPC training?

I can just about pay the bills, and being asked, I mean told, to pay £116 for 1 day course to take on my day off leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Cheers

Our boss will pay for the course, but the drivers have to do it in their own time - a reasonable compromise methinks

That a good compromise.

No, that isn’t a good compromise. No proper “professional”- a nurse or teacher for example, would be expected to attend a compulsory course in their own time.

Unless they do pay I dont think there will be many who will stump up and do it on their own in their own time , mind you there are enough drivers who work 70 hours a week they may do it,…what a waste of valuble time and money

Same here.

Where I was working the company will be paying for it and it will be done in work time, I think that is the only acceptable ‘compromise’ for employees.
