Are you supposed to take your digicard . .

. . . out when parked up overnight?

Or do you leave it in?

What is good practise?

I have always left mine in, but have recently been told I should take it out, but not sure why.

Leave it in, just remember to switch the mode to break when you park up! I always left mine in as it also counts up your daily rest and it never did any damage to my card c

If you are leaving it don’t forget to make end of duty and start of duty entries. Apart from that it doesn’t matter.

So what happens if you don’t, I used to but stopped doing it know it has never thrown up an infringement
Never been told I am doing it wrong, although my firm told me not to leave it in overnight, but I ignored there request.

Same here, I don’t do many nights out but when I do I just switch it to bed when i’m done for the day and nothing has ever been flagged up about it and my company are strict on doing things right.

I take mine out so it clearly shows end of shift etc.

Never been asked by my tacho for this on a daily rest - only when I put it back in after the weekend break
cheers

I don’t know. Could be a DHL thing. Nights out are rare for us but they say either take the card out or make sure you end the day and start the new one with entries. I don’t know what the penalties are for not doing so are if there are any. I just thought could be useful advice for the OP.

There are no penalties.

I always do Start/End of day entries. Although it’s not worried about here, I bet it is in France or Belgium . Takes a second, no hassle really. I also leave the card in all week and come Monday morning, add an hour other work to end of shift Friday and to the start of the shift Monday morning for Kitting/De-Kitting.

VOSA love to see complete records and leaving your card in all the time is an excellent way of getting a complete record, as they can see what you’re not up to when the tacho is “out”, so to speak (I.E. not swapping trailers/driving to the chinky etc etc  )

i have always left it in on a night out. showing 9 hours on rest is a clear indication of you daily rest anyway so it shouldnt be a problem

On my limited experience of digital tachos, I’ve always left it in from a Sunday night/Monday morning until I finish on Friday or Saturday. When I’ve finished for the day I let it run for a few minutes on ‘other work’ before setting it to rest and then in the morning set it back to ‘other work’ for 5 minutes or so before driving off. I think its all nonsense though, how I love my paper log books here.

I always leave card in apart from when I leave truck for service.I have been checked and nothing said,I did point out that I am the only driver of the vehicle.

one of the reasons for the introduction of digi cards was the fact that they could record 24/7. I know analogue charts showed 24 hours, but it wasn’t always practical to leave them in overnight.
the origional VOSA advice was to leave it in.
the start and end shift thing isn’t an issue unless you are crossing borders. don’t worry about it.

There is a requirement in the regs to record country for end and start of shift. It takes about 20 seconds to do and should really be done if you are leaving the card in.

Taking the card out is the easier way as it records this by default.

I have never seen this picked up as an infringement but it does appear to be listed in the graduated fixed penalties book

LEVEL 1 £30.00 fixed penalty
Fail to enter in the recording equipment the symbols of the countries in which driver begins and ends his journey
Section 97(1)(a) (iii) of the Transport Act 1968
Art. 15(5a)/Regulation 3821/85 (EEC)

The way to show your shift periods is manually enter “End Country” and “Begin Country” it’s very quick and easy, I’ll try and remember, go into the menu, scroll through select “entry driver 1” then you normally see “Begin Country UK” (or whatever Country was last selected) Enter for start of shift, of scroll to “End Country UK” for end of shift. If you’re double manning then do the same for “Entry Driver 2”.
Might of made it sound far more complicated than it sounds, it’s actually quicker than taking the card out and putting it back in next shift.

There is no problem leaving the card in, in fact as has been said it could be considered better as it shows a continuous record. I always leave it in when I’m working.
Don’t know why drivers who are sleeping in the truck would be asked to take it out, unless they’ve had a lot of problems with them being left on other work. Of course if I was working days then I’d remove it when the truck was in the yard in case somebody else used it.

This may be of interest to some of you

it states “failure to enter the symbols of the country where the daily work starts OR ends”.
so when you put your digi card in on monday morning, it will ask you what country you’re in (you may state UK). and that’s all you need to do, because unless you tell it otherwise, then you havn’t finished a shift outside of the country in which you began.

Surly though, if its an infringement it should flag up on analysis!
When I do a print out it shows I am in the UK.
It’s probably one of those trumped up offences VOSA like to make up.
