Do the job it was designed for, but if you could stretch to a 520/530/540, 720/30/40, or 920/30/40 you could then put truck maps / navcore on and it’d be better for the job.

It’s not for truck use, just general use. Years ago I was firmly against satnavs but that was when they were mostly used by idiots and cost silly money. My box of maps did the job just fine. But they’re pretty cheap now for basic models and I have to admit, they are a useful tool and there’s been a couple of times recently where I wish I had one. Seen both the above models advertised locally for £60, both apparently in full working order with clamp, charger and latest UK & ROI maps + post codes. Does that sound about right? Just had a gander on feebay and they seem to go for around that mark. Anything to check/watch out for on them? I haven’t got a bloody clue. :open_mouth:

XL one is a reliable basic TomTom with a bigger screen, have mine (Europe version) already for a few years and use the SD card slot for my Canada and USA maps when I drive over there.
Touch wood never let me down, update it regular and never made a nasty surprise
It’s not the dogs wobbly bits, with a zillion extra option but basic and reliable.
You can upload bridges and weight restrictions on it to make it truck compatible.

Send from my I-pad 2 which is a pain in the lower backside, refusing to use tapatalk etc.

Thanks, basic use is all I need it for. Punch in a post code and it to show me a close up of the area so I know where I’m going when I get to the town. I can get to towns okay without, it’s just finding the sites that are a problem. I’d rather have one with an option to turn off the voice direction thingy though. I don’t want a blow by blow account as I’m driving along.

I won’t buy Tom Tom anymore. Everyone crashed within a year. And I had 3. Garmin is yer’ man!

I have an XL One for sale with screen protector. If interested PM me.

I’ve completely had it with TomToms. Had an XL Live which was rubbish, that stopped working so giving them the benefit of the doubt I went for another TomTom. An all singing all dancing 1005 Live. It’s awful. Slow and with a very unresponsive touch screen, maps take ages to load, no more limited speed planning option. Basically just a pile of crap and my last TomTom. It’s a shame, they used to make such great devices.

Off on a tangent here but you use tapatalk with your iPad? I use it on the phone but I much prefer using the full site with the large screen on the iPad.

I purchased the TT 7000 Truck and am very happy with it which is the only reason I am parting with the One XL

What does one recommend then for someone that just wants the basic stuff as per my post above?

I’d be tempted to go for a Garmin next time. Or if you have an iPhone or Android phone and if your not going to need the satnav to be on all the time I’d get one of the good satnav apps.

If you have an iPhone Rob!! Try Nav Free app! It’s great and don’t cost you nothing! 69p buys you the speed cameras on the map!

@ Luke thx. Looking at a nuvi 200w now, well a 205w actually, dunno if there’s a difference. Seem to be a bit cheaper than Tomtom ONE XL for doing the same job, at least the job I want it for anyway.

@ dessy, no I don’t have any of that [zb]. My 6300 suffices for speaking to people and texting. Just out of interest, what sort of price could I get one for which would take my current sim and run this satnav app you’re on about. I’m just thinking there’s probably about £35-40 in the 6300 if I flogged it and a Garmin or Tomtom is gonna be £40-60 so how much would an iFone or Android thing be with that app?

Just going off on a tangent, is there any free downloadable map app or program for Windows? I always have one of my lappys with me and could look up where I want to go on that. A bit ■■■■■■■■■■ but it’d do the job and not cost owt if such a thing exists ? ? ? I don’t want to have to rely on an internet connection as this is a real PITA when you’re on the move, hence why I’ve been considering satnavs.

Tapatalk is a nuisance on the I-pad.
Keep it standard with the normal keyboard and it’s ok-ish
Must say if it was not for portability I prefer my netbook above anything else.

Auto-route / Map point by Microsoft are ‘available’ and very good for what you want.

The one XL is actualy one of the “old style” TomTom basic, fast enough and very good.
The problem with the new satnavs is that they can do to much, bleu tooth, speakerphone, live update, live traffic cameras, music and so on
This actualy slow the process, and ask for much higher processors, memory and graphics causing more trouble than you need to have.

had tom/tom one for years, very rarely use it as prefer maps[daughter uses it now],in what must be 5/6 yrs [it seems that long],all ive had to do is replace a couple of power cables[just chucked in bag],nothing else has ever gone wrong, maybe the latest one arnt so well built, too complicated,if it does go wrong and my girl wanted another id have no second thoughts over buying another tom/tom.
as for how good they are,i struggled to get on with it,girl uses it all the time as she has to go to different hospitals, unies ,she has no problem geting anywhere, city, town, she finds it straight away,
