I’ve completely had it with TomToms. Had an XL Live which was rubbish, that stopped working so giving them the benefit of the doubt I went for another TomTom. An all singing all dancing 1005 Live. It’s awful. Slow and with a very unresponsive touch screen, maps take ages to load, no more limited speed planning option. Basically just a pile of crap and my last TomTom. It’s a shame, they used to make such great devices.

The one XL is actualy one of the “old style” TomTom basic, fast enough and very good.
The problem with the new satnavs is that they can do to much, bleu tooth, speakerphone, live update, live traffic cameras, music and so on
This actualy slow the process, and ask for much higher processors, memory and graphics causing more trouble than you need to have.

Thing is all the problems I had with the XL are repeated with the 1005. Unresponsive touchscreen, slow map loading etc. Both rubbish.

I had a cheap satnav from Lidl as my first one (first under £200). Kept going wrong. It went back. TomTom next, Lost one. Got another. Got wet. Got another. First one sorted itself out. Got 2 now! Can’t see how anyone who goes anywhere regularly they are not familiar with can avoid it now unless they are a complete technophobe and by that I mean anyone who only uses technology before the industrial revolution and that is NO-ONE. Rob_K, they are so cheap, get a new one as fits your current needs, with maybe possibilities for expansion/enhancement. They simply take away the navigation aspect of driving and all that stress, leaving you to concentrate on the most important aspect of driving, avoiding accidents. TomTom for me, seems to be the European standard.

so how much would an iFone or Android thing be with that app?

I have an HTC Wildfire, it cost about 130 quid sim free. I have the google maps app, which is free and works very well. I have never been a massive fan of sat navs and I downloaded it purely out of curiosity as a friend had been raving about it. I have to admit it’s very good. I use it in the way you described i.e. just for finding the street/road/ building when I arrive at my destination area.

XL One did me for three years without serious problems, my mate uses it now on his pest control van and it always finds the minging restaurants and macdonalds so he is happy too.

The only fault it had was that it used to burn the small blade fuse in the charger about every 6 months

Ive got a tom tom one europe thats about 3 or 4 years old and still going strong. I also use google streets on the lappy with a dongle, its handy to see a photo of where your going.

Couldn’t get on with Autoroute in the end, so I’ve just bought a Garmin 205 for £30 locally.

The problem with sat nav’s is they are like mobile phones these days. You think you’ve got the latest model then another is released.

I’ve always been a TomTom person, always used the “GO” models which are the top end range. I’ve just upgraded from GO750 Live to a GO1005 Live which I’ll be putting to use next week.

Garmin have come on a long way especially with the NuLink range which give you real time live images of traffic and photographed lane guidance.

The 710 you mention is a fairly old model i.e. there’s been a 720, 730 and 750 model since. So unless the maps have been updated the maps on it are around 3-4 year old.
