You might not have anything to prove but there are those that do need to prove themselves when it comes to this.
I would rather autos too.I might even get an automatic car, next car I get
It’s not about proving anything. I personally prefer manual over automatic because of familiarity and manuals have far better engine braking in conjunction with Jake brakes. Jakes make exhaust brakes feel as effective as holding your hankie out of the window.
I haven’t owned a manual car for over twenty years, manuals are now a deal breaker.

Why would they need to prove anything nowadays?
When around 90+% of trucks are autos.
Star down under.:
Yeah mate, we’ve got autos and the same problems, they attract “drivers” or drovers who would otherwise never get a foot in the door.
I recently drove an automated manual Volvo. I was told that drivers reported better performance if driven manually. My experience was that in manual mode, I could make it use more fuel and make more noise, but I couldn’t make it go any better.
My issues with auto/man is that they are adaptive, a PIA if running out with 100 tonne of fuel, then coming home empty.
A slight deviation from the subject. Apparently I’m not allowed to state the nationality of substandard drivers over here, carving up the job and back stabbing good, established drivers, so I’ll refer to them as martions.
The martions are only steering wheel attendants, with no loading or securing abilities, so are infesting the linehaul sector. They are notorious for not speaking or replying to Australian drivers on the UHF.
One Aussie driver called another truck three or four times without answer. Aussie number 2 chimes in with, he must be a martion. Number one said “Nah, he’s in a Kenworth.” Number two came back with “Ya can get them with automatics, now.”
One of the (very few).ambitions I still have concerning trucks is to have a go in one if those big Yank conventional Kenworths or Peterbilts.
I’d be like a kid in a sweet shop, and embarrass my own kids when I rocked up to drive it in a pair of 501s, cowboy boots, and my truckers cap.and shades, while calling everybody ‘good buddy’ on the CB a la Kristofferson and Sonny Pruitt.
I hate to admit it but that was one of the things that made me want to be a trucker as a young lad.
‘‘Will.and Sonny…jamming gears has got to be a fever’’

I had learned on a Magirius Deutz with another owner driver mate, which had a much easier box as far as I recall…could even have been syncro.
On the Maggies the 232 had a crash box but if you were lucky and drove the 310 it was synchro - yes, I worked in a dealership in 1978.
Yep first artic I ever drove.
It was deffo a 310, brand new in 79 on.a T plate. pulling a tipper trailer.
Excellent motor ahead of it’s time complete with twin bunk sleeper…and a night heater
Unheard of at that time.
Like this for anybody who ait seen a one.

I dont know, you tell me,its condascending to others,I think thats the word, but really,we need to move on.My apprentice,he passed his class one.As far as Im concerned ,he is now a lorry driver. He will probably only ever drive automatics. It doesnt make him any less of a trucker. But you just reminded me of those mercs that were semi automatic. They werent too bad,but going back to the roundabout problem,if I remember, you touched this button on the “gear stick” and it would automatically jump into the right gear.Yes,they were a bit of a pain but much better than the eatons
The touching the button on the gearstick, was that the Mercedes with the EPS box, as I vaguely remember driving something that you are eluding to and how easy it was?

How tf can I tell you?
It was you who made the statement that I asked you to clarify.
I have not been condescending,.nor did I ever say that those who had no experience on constant mesh boxes were less of a trucker…on the contrary in fact,.I clearly stated there were a lot of good modern drivers about.
So don’t put words that I have never said into my mouth…and then we’ll '‘move on’.

Passing the test is only the start of the learning curve.

We used to sell a lot of eight wheeler tippers to the demolition boys - they used to put “greedy boards” around the top of the box and still couldn’t break them.
The 310 had a V10 engine - as you say they were really quite something in their day.
