i think if it was breedon they would just take your contracts on,they seem to be going down the owner driver route.when they took us over from ennstone there were about 77 company drivers, now its down to 30 odd, they seem to be a very ambitious company and have got the right sort of people in charge.peter tom his the top man who was in charge of ai when they sold out to holcim followed by simon vivian who ran hanson.tim hall is in charge of the english division who used to be in charge of tarmac western, hes desperate for more plants especially in the western area.

I worked under Tim Hall for 7 years at Western. In fact, I bought one of my Tarmac Merc mixers that he got at auction in 2003. Very fair to work under, straight to the point, visited plants and was very approachable. Believe me, there are a few Tarmac managers that are twitching now with this take over hoping its Breedon because they worked under Tim Hall when we were Western, hoping he will keep them. If there is anybody that will want to "bite" Tarmac back its him especially in Western. Hes from Kington, was based there, where Tarmac have one of the biggest quarries in the region.

Are breedon big enough to take on big 30,000/100,000 meter jobs or are they your housing site type company?

they did a big 45,000 meter job last year at castle donington near derby from there cloud hill site 10 miles away, and had a back up plant at the quarry.went there to help them out a few times and i think they were supplying about 600 meters a day on many occasions.the trouble is most of there plants are too far apart and lacking back up thats why they are desperate for plants in the west.we are 45 miles away from our nearest plant at leinthall

Hed better get used to Renaults if he takes us over because Tarmac are selling them as fast as they can to O/Ds before this buyout goes through.
Maybe somebody should tell him Renault is Volvo. Got his phone number??

I’m honestly thinking of buying a new truck as I think these offers are to good to turn down and with the new euro 6 being 10K more expensive it’s a bargain.

My only concern is what happens with the “merger”

They have basically said the drivers should be ok because both Tarmac/lafarge and the new company will obviously need drivers.

They ain’t told us anything “concrete” yet but they think we will go with the plants but I’ve got a horrible feeling all in contract drivers will go with Tarmac/lafarge

We thought they would be looking at plants in the north west as they have nothing round this way but if the rumours are true then ain’t

we have 2 stone quarries in the west with plants at both of them ,the quarry at leinthall is running nowhere near capacity and produces good con aggregate so the plants in the west like kington, hereford, wooferton, wellington and bayston fit perfectly.

unless there are aggregate sites to go with them then personally i think its very unlikeley but you never know.they might have to buy plants in an area they dont really want to get the ones they do want

The one plant Tim Hall would want that he managed to get into the Old Llanwern Corus steel works is staying with Tarmac/Lafarge.
There is a huge development starting there soon. It must be 20 square miles. They did try for an airport there to take some load off Heathrow as its only an hour or so away a couple of years back but couldn`t get it through Parliament.
Now there is a whole new town being built on it with hundreds of houses, cinemas, restaurants, retail outlets etc

have tarmac/lafarge chose the plants they are keeping or have they been told which ones they can keep.if its the former then they will probably keep the bigger, newer more efficient plants and where there is greater potential for work.
