Hello Archie, I had quite forgotten about the photos and found them whilst packing up, have also found a load of french drivers strike ones so will post them probably on trucking in the eighties topic tomorrow.
Bullit I’m not sure what Bob’s doing now but last I heard of him from his cousin a few years ago he was driving a london bus and I’m not sure that I can disclose the truth about the diggers as the time frame for secrets probably has’nt elapsed yet.
chazzer
If we are talking about the same Bob Crane – last time I saw him he was driving for Pullens !!
Big Leggy, thanks for jogging the memory on that, your right Bob Crane was and probably still is driving for Pullens. Just out of interest does anyone know what happened to Bobby (little legs) Marino after he left as Mondials transport manager?
Bullit in answer to your question about a firm out of enfield running to cyprus the only one I’m aware of was Mondial as they had blue tilts pulled by cypriot reg dafs and they moved from Bow to the Enfield area but George had pretty well got Cyprus sewn up.

I used to get my P&O vouchers off Bobby Marino he worked for Transmec after Mondials, not sure what he’s up to now.
What was EHJ 562T like in its earlier years? I bought her off Bracknell boys in about 92 & had her for a few years I flogged it to Derrick Garrard around 95 he was selling Transcons to a Siberian geezer, twas a great motor never let me down really well it always got me down & back lets put it that way. It did however get me a £15000 bill off her majesty for road tax offences, I got caught creeping out of Dover with a load of Bulgy vino on in the daylight displaying PLG silly boy me!!!
I liked your picture of a young looking Les Phillips, I saw him a couple of weeks back at the Log Cabin near Thurrock he’s still doing Athens twice monthly for Intersped, Les sort of took me under his wing on my 1st trip & put me straight on how to do the job, what with him & Fred I was never short of advice as a young fella.
Its a great thread this I’ll try & get The Wife to put some of my pics on when she gets a chance.
fly sheet - I flagged this thread up with my dad earlier today as he was a previous owner of the transcon in chazzer’s pics. I will get him to post on here, but very briefly he owned it from 1982-86/87 after purchasing it from Newham Motors. It was a bog standard E320 until those nice chaps at ■■■■■■■ had a little play with it . It never missed a beat during the time that he owned it, but I will let him convey the rest.

I’ll bet she was a beauty back then Paul, does your Dad know her history before he bought her as she was a 79 model but I always thought she was a French 1 for some reason? it pulled like a train when I had it, It ended up in ■■■■■■■ for a tweak whilst in my care & that got her going a tad better, it seems like a lorry that had a long & interesting career, I thought I’d lost her once when there were huge floods in Greece & the water was above the headlamps but a few days in the sun sorted her out! Try & get some pictures of her up if you can I’m mithering the Wife now to do some for me but no joy tonight!! I

Strange how this thread has evolved ; it all started about greedy guts Mr.B.Hogg.
Hullo Harry,
Now come on mate, where have I said Boss Hogg was greedy ? He was obviously in the right place at the right time. He had a good crowd of us subbing for him. he paid as good as any of the other companies, and through Theo Vianelli he always had a good backload for his vehicles. Obviously not your opinion though. Never mind we all have to have something to moan about eh?
Cheers, Archie.
Churchyboy, thanks for the info on EHJ just to throw some earlier data up I actually bought the transcon from Derek Garrard about 1987/88 after he had bought it from some one in Dagenham whose name escapes me, Derek ran it for a couple of years but was into low loaders and sold it to me so that he could buy a 6 wheel F12 unit. It was’nt till Derek rang me today that I found out that he had bought it back and sold it to some russians where as far as he knows its still running around Moscow. When I packed in as an owner driver in 1990 I sold it to Dennis the Rat aka one of the bracknell boys and then saw it again at the bottom of the Blanc in january 1993 when I worked for the US air force on my way to Italy. They had closed the tunnel due to heavy snow and EHJ and driver were parked up in the total garage along with the rest of us waiting to go up. I did introduce myself as a previous owner and the only trouble I had with it was a broken valve seat (luckily 5 miles from home) resulting in an exchange head and turbo, otherwise so long as the valve clearances were checked regularly it pulled like a train, lovely 13 speed gearbox but apparently had a different rear axle fitted in its early life with no diff lock. Look forward to seeing some of your pics of the old girl and just so as not to hijack this thread too much I also used to do work for Brian Hogg of Anglo Greek in the early eighties until I found better paying and lighter work.It certainly was one of those trucks that had character to it, a bit of a one off.
Chazzer
I also apologise for hijacking this thread, it was just nice to see some pics of one of dad’s old motors.
My dad sold the vehicle to Mick Kelly, so I can only presume that this was the chap who you are referring to?
These unfortunately are the only pics that we could find!

Archie ,I had the dubious honour of being Oggies first driver to Pireaus . I will be brief ; I left UK ,tipped Athens .Reloaded lemons for Rotterdam . Picked a trailer up in the Hook for Athens . Broke down in Lubianna in December for a week ,slept in the truck sub-zero & no heat.Sorted it out myself . Met Oggie on the way down driving his MG Midget . I was asked to give it day & night for a £30 bonus. Just made it home for Xmas .And then the tight b-terd not only knocked me for dosh but accused me of stealing ! Fond memories of a total C-word . On top of that he slagged me off to my mate who took over the job who when hearing the BS from Oggy really turned him over. Yeah ,Oggy is a great guy.The words ■■■■ & on fire come to mind. LOL
Hullo Harry,
Yes I saw your earlier posting saying the same thing, I thought at the time when I read it that it was perhaps just sour grapes and an inflamed memory, but yes I can fully understand that if you were treated like that, how you must feel and I know for certain that I would feel exactly the same way, in fact I do feel the same way about that little Greek ■■■■ George Atiba. (Mondial)
Hullo Flysheet,
Great pictures mate, I’m sure somewhere I have a photo of that Transcon when Mick Kelly had it. Can’t recognise anybody realy in the photo of the lads (and lass), I do recognise Derek Rance in the middle, I seem to have a recolection of the chap on the left, with the lass, and I also have a feeling I’ve met the guy on the far right before. When I subbed for Hoggy he was up in Silvertown, then he moved down to Becton, pretty soon after that I packed in. The Renaults like the one in the picture came later I believe. But still great photos, thanks.
Cheers, Archie.

Me too, the one on the left is Lindsey (Speak). I recognise the one on the right too but names escape me.
Were the Ford Transcons from the New Holland / Ford tractor factory. I remember that there were some well maintained Fords for sale with very little mileage on them.
Churchyboy, your right Derek Garrard did EHJ from Mick Kelly the first time round and it was Derek who filled in the windows, I insulated the cab with behind the paneling with fibreglass wool as per loft insulation cos there was’nt anything between panels and steel which made it warmer in the winter. Typical Derek Rance pose in Flysheet’s pic and the only other driver I recognize was Lyndsey but I can’t remember where from, but nice to see some pics of EHJ after I sold it. The only fault with it was typical transcon wedge brakes, bloody useless, unless you used the small lever on the dash then it tried to throw you through the screen especially unit only as it was either off or full braking no matter how gently you tried to pull the lever back. Still it was one of those trucks you were sorry to sell and if I’d stayed an owner driver I would have kept it for quite a few more years.

Hiya Archie, only just learnt how to put piccies on here glad you liked them, I dont know Mick Kelly but was really pleased to see Churchyboys pics of it, if you get a chance lets see what it looked like when MK had it. Did a few loads for Hoggy £700 up front but you got £690 £10 to him for his trouble. I only remember him being @ Becton cos I’m young!!! I remember doing a load to NATO base in Crete for him & being around 2 weeks late thanks to the French drivers striking for a change, Apostolis blood pressure was through the roof over that job, anyway I’ll not bore yhou any longer 10 10

I had all them troubles & more with it Chazzer, in the end a Greek brake man plumbed the auxillary air tank into the footbrake circuit & it helped the job no end, I was sorry to see it go but the 4x2 tax thing kind of sealed its fate, that & the poxy electrics they had, most of your insulation had dropped to the bottom of the cab I reckon cos it was bloody freezing in the bad weather!!!
