Here we have Geoff Frost posing on route to Iran with his “beloved” AEC which he drove JHW of Camberley.
He later went to work for Astran driving a V8 Scania. No comparison really…
The bumper and the mirrors on this Mandator don’t match the number plate. Is it a ringer?

Its comments like this that add fuel to the fire in our house about my wifes view
s on looking at old pics of lorries, so please stop it
My wife regards this site as nothing less than TRUCK ■■■■!
Could be worse I suppose.
Emmerson2
What pics are u looking at I can assure you they are the same truck unless Jeff took a pot of paint to Tehran with him
Roger
Bestbooties, my good lady describes it as Truck ■■■■ as well but then she’s always looking at Horse ■■■■ (dressage and showjumping websites).

You’ve lost me - they’re exactly the same from what I can see.
How do you mean?

Hiya looking for the ten diffrences all i can see is the drivers mirror has turned round.
the bumper!! no particular spec on the bumper some had crome then there was heavy duty or the one
fitted wich was standard on the albion and leyland beaver…times may have been hard, any bumper lying
around in the yard may have been bolted on… this happened at adams butter if it fitted it went on.
not like nowadays only one part fits and thats that.

ok didnt know we were being picky about whether the truck was fitted with factory parts ,all I can tell u is the two pics of the truck are the same vehicle whether it had a mirror facing upside down or back to front and the bumper is inside out its the same vehicle I should know my spanners have worked on this truck if you check the righthand door you can see my fingerprint a dirty greasy mark never washed of by Jeff who only knew how to sit in the driving seat and move the steering wheel
Roger
Roger.Did you take any photos at the funeral of John Bruce for those of us that were unable to attend. You are our main source of info now.Mike
I’m not disputing that they’re the same lorry! On an M plate lorry, the bumper wouldm have been deeper, and painted white or chrome, and the mirrors would have been mounted on the doors. That style bumper was only used up to K reg, I think.
I don’t want to start WW3, it was just an observation.

Surely, the finish on a bumper would be down to the owner? The bumper on the pictures was a stock item - one of a few that could be specified at the time. If (as was the case at the time) the owners ran several similar vehicles over a period of years, the bumper could’ve been held in store and fitted latterly.
AEC relocated the mirror arms to where they are on this Mandator as a subtle design change in the late sixties - they were initially located on the doors when the Ergomatic cab was launched in 1965.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but in future it might be wise to read-up on something before posting in a contentious way. There are a few members of these forums who are subject matter experts and have written books which cover things you’ve mentioned. One such book includes information about the point you raised about the mirror arms - as well as nearly everything else to do with post-war AECs: AEC Lorries in the Post-War Years 1945-1979 by Graham Edge - ISBN 1 871565 21 9.

World War 3-and-a-bit duly started! Tin hats and flak jackets at the ready! Here are some '75 Ergos I borrowed from a site:
They have mirrors on the A-post, although I did see some others with them mounted on the doors. ■■■■- Marky has beat me to the post. Never mind. I’ll look for some pre-'68 ones now. Here’s some:

Hey sinbin i was on your side…its the other guy picking fault about the bumpers…he still claims AEC fitted
differant bumpers on in various years, total crap…you could have a chrome bumper on any model or the heavy bumper fitted.
i think the only standard heavy bumper was on the marshall major. go and look at my AEC and tell me whats right with it.
John
There is one on page 79 of the BRS thread which is currently next on the index page it is a “D” reg. with door mounted mirrors . We do have to remember that things are done differently nowadays and everything as to match whereas we looked at it if it fitted it was fine, you hardly ever see a wagon with different doors on and in a completely different livery and all different coloured wheels.
cheers Johnnie
