Hullo,
I’ve been trying to think of the bloke from Knaresborough, was on for Whittles (long before I was) he had a few motors, he used to go by the name of Bostumus. If I am not mistaken there was a write up about him in one of the Rags, he was one of the first to buy a magirus deutch ? Later in life I met his son, he moved to France and was running a French motor. Come on Malcolm, you must know. :smiley:
Cheers, Archie.

Hi Archie,i think the guy your thinking of was Alec Grieve who traded as Butomas. I first met him in teheran at the start of the revolution. He was parked at the side of the street near the customs with his maggie d whilst most of the other brits were in Davies turners Compound. I think he was there for over a month. It was one of his trucks that went on fire down the tapline a couple of years later with a Whittle load on,there was talk of a delivery of brass valves having dissapeared from the trailer. It was being driven by a red haired scotsman who previously worked for OHS.
Regards Jamie.

Hullo Jamie,
Wow ! :open_mouth: Sorry mate I read the post and without really looking I thought it was Steve (dog) so I answered him, he’s just brought it to my notice. Yes of course it was Alec Greaves, I just couldn’t think of his name. I don’t know what he’s doing now, the old yard of his was empty when I last past through there. Probably a new Housing Estate now. I also remember Ginger Jock, I wasn’t there when he went off the road but he spent the whole night telling me about it on the train when I saw him. Well mate I hope everything is going well for you down in the Valleys, though it might still be a bit cold down there eh? Thanks for the answer to my question, all the best.
Cheers, Archie.

Anglo Continental had the sister to this one;

Here it is in Tehran 1975 attending the Tehran Motor Fair. Ray Scutts (Astran driver) posing and then loading a Triumph TR7(?) up those “precarious” ramps!

Check out the “truly luxurious” interior! Luv those camp curtains :confused: Bet those plastic seats were comfortable in the sweltering desert heat!

Due to the Triumph roadster having no external boot hinges, it is actually a TR6 and it looks crap on painted steelies :stuck_out_tongue:

Surely the the angle of the ramps is too great and the Triumph will ground on the back edge of the trailer :exclamation:

I have seen several Spaniards loading cars like that, they were prototype test cars from Nissan Renault in Mantes, and the Spaniards put blind faith in planks of wood and an effigy on the dashboard :stuck_out_tongue:

Nice pic Ash, but that is not the interior of a V8 sleeper !

yep aec v8 = flat floor a space cab compared to that pic. :slight_smile:

Oh! :blush: Its the interior of this one Bill;

Is RKR 283G and 284G (Anglo Continental) V8’s then? Cuz I cant tell the difference between a V8 and a non V8 looking from the outside. Apart from badge at the top of the grille. Am I missing something Bill? :confused:

Yes mate there are quite a few differences not all immediatly apparent though.
Dont want to hi jack the thread with a list!

Come on Ash, that’s nothing like a TR7, more like a TR5 or because it’s a left ■■■■■■ could be a TR 250 which was the American spec one, or a TR 4a irs, I’ve loaded cars at the Brussels Motor Show like that.

Here we have Geoff Frost posing on route to Iran with his “beloved” AEC which he drove JHW of Camberley.
He later went to work for Astran driving a V8 Scania. No comparison really…

Oviously you meant the Mandator was much the superior :wink: how many trips did he do with it before he moved on , i bet it overheated a few times in those high temperatures,just noticed ,is that another AEC behind it?

Looking at the AEC with the high roof sleeper I would say that in its day this would have been a good cab and well ahead of its time, the V8 topliner of the early 70’s.
Looking at early sleeper cabs the Scammell Crusader sleeper must have been one of the biggest available at the time, there is loads of space and no high engine hump in them.

The only wagon I can recall with more room than the Crusader would be the MAN 16.232 as that had a column change and a flat floor but the best one was the Bussing but not many over here that was early 70s

Only ever met Geoff once when we ran down through the Commie block together and we got on like a house on fire with us both being ex guardsmen.
That was when he drove for Astran,(I think he was an o/d ?)

ANGLO CONTINENTAL TRANSPORT ?

Hi does TruckerAsh or Wheelnut know any history of Anglo Continental Transport ?

I remember around 1971/72, a very well educated type (far to posh to be in the transport world) Richard Sheppard-Baron with his Coutts & Co cheque book etc etc, running those AEC and Crane Frehuaf opentops to Europe.

Then it was difficult to get the Coutts cheques to work and I think he may have run into trouble and got taken over, to end up operating to middle-east - would be interested if anyone know who by ?

On the subject of AEC do any of you lads remember a bloke called Jim O Conner from Bradford .He ran a Mandator in the 70s a sleeper cab painted white with a red strip it had a sun visor and roof rack and i remember the sleeper windows and the windows at the top of the door were blacked out Jim was an ex ww2 paratrooper about 20 stone with a patch over one eye .I meet him once at Birkenhead when he came up to me read the name on the cab door and asked me how my dad was .We got talking and he told he ran m/e this was about 1978/79.Ishould have had a camera with me.
