When my poor dad was suffering from dementia and could no longer drive , he’d get the bus to town every day-he lost his poxy bus pass every other day!
The bus driver’s obviously knew him and let him on without it ,and would drop him right outside his house(luckily on the bus route).
They gave him a little bit more of a life for a little bit longer-fair play to them, it really did make a difference to my wonderful father that ended up with this [zb] disease.
Contrast that with the [zb] bag that shut the doors on this poor woman-I hope he [zb] suffers in prison.

Same here.

Let’s see how this most likely occurred…

Cliff spots Joan and tells her to ■■■■ off, no free travel today. Closes the doors then checks his offside mirror to check it’s clear to pull away. Unknown to him she has tried to force her way onto the bus and got snarled up in the doors. His only mistake was not doing that final nearside mirror check before pulling away but tbh that’s easily done when you’re focused on the offside mirror pulling into a live lane of traffic.

Speaking as a former bus driver, what this report fails to mention is that this freeloader probably does this everyday day, free travel without a pass.

“early stages of Alzheimer’s” so wtf is she doing travelling on the buses on her own? The drivers are not mental health workers.

With the number of routes and driver turnover at most companies it’s probably quite rare for her to see the same driver at any regular frequency.

Unless you have had the misfortune of being a bus driver and witnessing the sheer ignorance of the majority of the general public you really cannot imagine how stupid some people can be.

Don’t get me wrong, Cliff sounds like one of those bus drivers that hates dealing with the public, which is quite ironic considering his chosen job, but bus drivers have to deal with just as much ■■■■ and us lorry drivers and we all know how quickly “blame the driver” comes into action.

27 months for not checking his nearside mirror when pulling away from a bus stop…

27 months for not checking his nearside mirror when pulling away from a bus stop…

But…

Checking his nearside mirror is exactly what he’s paid for. It’s his responsibility to ensure the safety of his passengers and other road users.
I get it, Joe Public is the most annoying and tedious group of people on the planet but, someone ending up losing both legs because of a grumpy, inattentive driver isn’t on.

The handle from her walking aid got stuck in the door.

It’s most likely that the cameras on the bus tell the real story. Again we are in one of those positions where a company has rules and procedures that have to be followed. A driver has the right not to allow a person onto a public service vehicle if they so wish or deem it to be an issue to them or other passengers.

No doubt that the bus company will have rules about fare discount cards and free travel etc. But I am only surprised they haven’t publicly lambasted the driver in this case like they normally would in this sort of case as a PR exercise. In these sorts of events, normally they will come out with “the driver should have let this lady on the bus, and we have retrained our drivers” to make themselves look good and try and undo the damage that has been done.

Bottom line it seems from the article at least, he thought she was a previous person who did not have her card. He did not check the doors were properly closed, he did not do a left mirror check when pulling away.

It’s a sad world we live in sometimes, and yes I get old people can be problematic especially if dementia is involved, but what about compassion and care for the elderly? Most bus drivers are decent people who will wait until elderly people are seated etc and even help them on and off a bus where possible.

But again it’s often the failures of the companies that go unnoticed. Rigid rules for some things don’t work in a dynamic environment, and the threats of disciplinary action for minor issues makes these kinds of situations worse as drivers fear being taken to task and losing their jobs over trivial matters.

This was an old lady trying to get on a bus, at 6pm an odd time for an elderly lady to be catching a bus into town. Not a scenario of some freeloader trying to get a free ride.

Sorry but in my opinion any company rules would go out the window and I’d deal with it the way I feel best at the time and circumstances. Potential disciplinary action or not by the company.

But having said all that the main reason I would never be a bus driver is having to deal with people every day. I can see how hard it must be for bus drivers, but to do the job you need to enjoy meeting new people and dealing with the general public. Another reason for not allowing any Joe public to become a bus driver, it’s not a job for everyone it takes a certain kind of person, and also if these companies paid drivers their worth they would not struggle to retain drivers, and also wouldn’t need to take absolutely anyone on, who thinks that isn’t bad I can earn more money for just driving around in a bus.

Blame on all sides as usual but the driver it seem did wrong and is paying for it big style.

Twenty-seven months! It should have been years, his actions are unforgivable. I bet the bully’s not feeling so tough now.
In my experience, being a bus driver, the inspectors/management caused more grief than the public or traffic.

I have done some service bus work, most passengers are pleasant to deal with. NOT ALL. You have theinspectors who want to check tickets etc. Some of them are on a power trip, you also have your own office bods(think ar%%ey fork lift driver) for context. They want to match up every concession pass with your way bill. If only we could all use some courtesy and common sense.

So you think people with early Alzheimer’s should have no independence at all?

An extremely ignorant attitude displayed in your statement above.
She’s in her 80’s and forgot her bus pass but you call her a freeloader ffs.

And on another note a bit of kindness

You’d only get this in Ireland! The amazing moment of kindness has gone viral.
An Irish bus driver made headlines worldwide for a simple act of kindness that went a very long way.

The Cork bus driver, stopped his bus to make sure that an elderly woman didn’t trip on her shoelace.

The driver, William Harris, was in control of the 205 bus in Cork City (from the Cork Institute of Technology to the city centre). It was on this route that he noticed an elderly lady getting off the bus with her shoelaces untied. As her arthritis was preventing her from doing it up herself Harris stepped out of the bus, got down on his knee, and gave her a hel⁷ping hand.

The woman had bad arthritis which prevented her from doing it up herself, so Harris stepped out of the bus, bent down and gave the lady a helping hand.

Try reading the full article rather than making assumptions.

The driver claimed he thought she was a passenger who previously didn’t have her bus pass. She didn’t even get on the bus so how would he know she didn’t have her bus pass? Is he a Clairvoyant?

He didn’t do the checks he should have, he closed the doors on her instead of dealing with it properly based upon an assumption it seems. Had he not shut the doors on her she would have got on the bus and he would have found out if she had her bus pass on her or not. And simply would have done as said sorry no bus pass you will have to pay the full fare or get back off the bus.

I hope for his sake it’s a wind up as if serious he’s a bit of an arse hole

As with the dark humour of soldiers, emergency workers, doctors, etc, it can come across as incredibly insensitive and crass to those on the outside. Most bus drivers will see this, and instantly recognise the situation. I did. The passenger sticking the walking stick between the doors, might just as easily try to jab you with it. I was once tripped up by an elderly passenger, when I was hurrying along the outside of the bus stands, trying to get to the toilet between my two runs. He stuck his walking stick out, and tripped me up. I turned around, and was about to RIP him a new arshole, when I spotted the inspector looking. You see, on the buses, the passengers are always right, and they know it… i had to bite my tongue. And that constant “drip drip” of [zb] passengers treating you like ■■■■, and management treating you like ■■■■, and biting your tongue, wears you down.

He has to live with that stupid stupid mistake for the rest of his life, I don’t know what’s worse him thinking he was a little hilter or not checking the doors and mirrors.
Common sense was all that was needed, hes the type that would leave a kid stranded in the middle of nowhere for not having the fare
He should have got 5 years at least

“Stupid Mistake” - my arse! - It was a deliberate act of Evil - There was no upside for anyone in the way he behaved, not even the potential of extra revenue raised for the firm, that ultimate “Jobsworth’s” explanation of their “I woz only obeying orders” excuse.

“Jailed” was the correct result for Justice here.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the old dear has since died, with losing both legs likely a contributing factor… :frowning:

The guy’s ability to drive his bus correctly - doesn’t actually come into it.

Not going to go down the ‘hope she doesn’t try to sue the bus company, she wouldn’t have a leg to stand on’ route 'cos it would be such bad taste.
Sorry mods  :frowning:

Act of evil I don’t think so, he was just a begrudgingly git who had a chip on his shoulder from probably not getting promoted to inspector or something like that
You have them people in all professions and they take there rejection out on anyone or anything they can
It was neglect and uncaring and not doing his job properly, hopefully he spends the rest of his life being reminded of it and he gets a dogs life in prison
He will soon probably know what the real word evil means

My father has dementia and there is no way in hell I or anyone in my family would allow him to travel unaccompanied on a bus which is why I am questioning WTF the family was doing?

Not once did I state I agreed with the actions of the driver, just playing devil’s advocate and trying to figure out how this most likely happened. There are always two sides to every story but by all means just blindly follow sensationalised “click-bait” articles if you so wish. I personally don’t believe a thing I read in the media and question everything.

I had the misfortune of being in the bus industry for around 20 years, unlike Cliff I really didn’t give a ■■■■ who travelled on my bus. I would have let her on for free and probably got the ramp out for her if she had mobility issues. The company I worked for was too tight to employ ticket inspectors and I didn’t get paid enough to “enforce” the rules.

Yes it’s an afwul situation, another bus driver who hates his job / dealing with the public (you’d be suprised how comon it is) The big opperators dont give a ■■■■ who they employ as long as the drivers seat is filled.
