Ammonia Fumes - How to deal with this

Hello everyone,

Had a ammonia leak in my trailer.

Anything Incan do?

Carillion are in severe trouble. Not only in construction but also in buildings maintenance. You could make a contribution by using your ammonia fumes to disinfect hospital toilets. Society will thank you for that. We thank you for your first post.

Trailers do not use ammonia as a refrigerant.!!!

Perhaps he has a tautliner or a euroliner or even an ordinary box trailer and had a spill from a container/package.

Is it me■■? Is this a fishing exercise !!!

No, it is just that the fumes made me slightly dizzy and i couldn’t get the smell out of my nose for like three days. And if i am going to be doing this full time, i was wondering if anyone had come across something like this before and has a solution.

no,i wouldnt think its you…id just think its yet another attempt at pishy trolling with some backup to valididate it replies…it never ends…

UKtramp would know.Where is he when you need him?

Freezers don’t use ammonia either. Ammonia is used in blast freezing warehouses. Not in domestic freezers.

Must try harder.

Also ammonia is potentially fatal we had a driver loading a trailer at a freezer warehouse, they had an ammonia leak from the ammonia plant whilst he was there. A cloud of ammonia filled the trailer with him in it. Within a few minutes he could hardly breathe and they immediately rushed him to Kingsmill hospital in a work car didn’t even waste time calling an ambulance.

He was in hospital for a few days and they said he was lucky as it could have easily killed him.

Amonia is very dangerous stuff.

If you have any cigarettes in your pocket give them away, oh how we laughed!

Nope he is talking rubbish, ammonia is not transported in this way. He would have been dead not on here typing this rubbish.

Ooops,I missed that.Sorry.

I tipped at DHL Wetherspoons a few weeks back. Security guard goes through all the crap of “have you been here before” etc so I said no to spice it up even though I’ve worked there before.

Anyways he starts saying if I hear a fire alarm I go outside but if I hear the ammonia alarm I must go inside. So I asked him what they sound like, is there a difference and which one is which and he couldn’t answer which was helpful

Hello again,

Why would i phish, when i am not asking for any personal information.

But more importantly, my day went something like this.

A few months ago, i obtained my class 2 licence after a few failed attempts, and a couple fails by an extremely dickish examiner.

I worked for another company, got let go because i was trying to cut my teeth on a vehicle in the 18tonne range, rather than starting in the 7.5 tonne range.

I have done some agency work, and this company offered me a trial run, as they are looking for drivers.

The job entails driving (with a porter) to tips, picking up freezers, washing machines, microwaves and other sundry electronic equipment. We then drive it to another site, where they properly dispose of it.

On the last run, we took onboard some freezers, filling roughly half of the trailer. When we arrived at the disposal site, we opened up the back, and a terrible smell hit us in the face. It smelled like chlorine, but nastier, and less sharp but more dense.

I have never done this type of work before.

My porter told me that they were ammonia fumes (no colouration, just a smell, no liquids either).

We had to leave the shutter up to try and air out the fumes.

Now, if you could please assume that I am not a troll or a phisherman, what would these fumes be, what could i do to either neutralise them, or can i wear a mask, and if so, what kind.

If someone could make a suggestion from prior experience or technical know-how, i would be much appreciative. Alternatively, if someone could direct me to a thread where something of this nature has already been addressed.

Also, no phiserman would go this this much trouble to write so lengthy a reply, or to try to use as much effort to spell correctly or use proper grammar, excepting those parts where my finger has caught the wrong key whilst typing this reply. Phisers are lazy.

Thank you,
TjStorm88

You could do worse than carry one of these…they keep out Rusky nerve agent apparently,I daresay new canisters can be obtained…and no,I’m not taking the pee

Hello Baggie,

Thank you very much for the reply. I don’t suppose if you know of a mask that would be something like a mouth and nose only mask. Like what you might use spray painting, or an externinator?

Would something like a JSP Force8 mask work? Link below:

What’s a class 2 licence? What trailer are you pulling with your class 2 licence?
What did they say and do at the site that “properly disposes of freezers” when you tipped there 3 days ago?
What induction into this site did you receive?

And well done. Your using a spell checker that seams to be working write.

Hello Franglais,

A skeptic, i read. Spell checkers, other than types like grammarly, will not pick up alot of bad english, although they may be technically correct, they are not contextually correct.

My class 2 entitkes me to drive a rigid lorry, not articulayed. I had to pass a 100 question exam, a cpc exam and a hazard awareness exam. The cpc has to be renewed every five years, totalling a totalog 35 hours, plus get another medical exam.

At the site, they disn’t say anything. I had to get my truck weighed. Then at a warehouse, a forklift came to the back, and picked up three appliances at a time, then takes them away, unless they have decomposing biological waste, then itis taken directly to the shredder/crusher. Then glass has to be taken out and thrown into a skip.

Hello,

I was transporting freezers from a tip to a disposal facility, and one of the freezer units had cracked, leaking ammonia fumes.

I was just wondering if masks would help and if so, what type (if suggestions are available).

Thanks

You should have had an induction which covers eventualities such as this. If your porter recognised the smell of ammonia, maybe they know the appropriate measures to take. Failing that, a phone call to head office for guidance would be in order. If you’re new to the game, the company should be understanding and happy to help. If not, go do something else.
