I was transporting freezers from a tip to a disposal facility, and one of the freezer units had cracked, leaking ammonia fumes.
I was just wondering if masks would help and if so, what type (if suggestions are available).
Thanks
You should have had an induction which covers eventualities such as this. If your porter recognised the smell of ammonia, maybe they know the appropriate measures to take. Failing that, a phone call to head office for guidance would be in order. If you’re new to the game, the company should be understanding and happy to help. If not, go do something else.
This is NOT ammonia for a start off, any freeze equipment that would have held ammonia would have been de -commissioned and pumped down prior to transportation. I am an ammonia trained and licenced fridge engineer so I know this is not correct. If any traces of ammonia were present then let off a CO2 fire extinguisher as the CO2 will eat up the smell.

I tipped at DHL Wetherspoons a few weeks back. Security guard goes through all the crap of “have you been here before” etc so I said no to spice it up even though I’ve worked there before.
Anyways he starts saying if I hear a fire alarm I go outside but if I hear the ammonia alarm I must go inside. So I asked him what they sound like, is there a difference and which one is which and he couldn’t answer which was helpful
Ammonia alarms sound different to a fire alarm, also either orange or green beacons will also be flashing. Upon hearing an ammonia alarm you certainly wouldn’t want to be going inside a building, be no different to putting you in a gas chamber. Who ever told you this is totally wrong, also if you did follow this procedure the management would be put into prison for not only manslaughter but also prosecuted for failing to have a proper ammonia escape procedure written by someone such as myself. Every ammonia cold store has to have an ammonia escape procedure written by an ammonia qualified engineer with specialist knowledge by law. Every ammonia cold store has to have an ammonia partner such as myself to inspect their premises on a regular basis and have a regular documented service and maintenance record. To add to this the ammonia plant has to have every pressure safety valve inspected and tested every 5 years.
Thank you very much for the reply. I don’t suppose if you know of a mask that would be something like a mouth and nose only mask. Like what you might use spray painting, or an externinator?
I would be concerned about my eyes as well as my respiratory system to be honest.
I’ll take a stab in the dark here…your boss couldn’t give a flying fugg about you,or your health or well-being,so you need to look after yourself…buy some gear !!..you only get issued one set of lungs/eyes
I think we’ve established that it’s not ammonia and that the OP only thought that because it’s what he was told by his drivers mate, but that still doesn’t tell the OP what it’s likely to be and is it in any way harmful.

If it is from domestic fridges and freezers then it is not harmful. It would be classed as an irritant at the worst case. As for what it could be all depends on the age of the appliances and what they are etc, etc. Not harmful to breathe in so no real worries as no domestic appliances ever used toxic gases for years. The amount of refrigerant that is used in a domestic sized appliance is ounces and not enough to cause any harm other than to the ozone.

Definite +1!
This is a forum about Lorries NOT fridge’s and freezers i think the beast of Bejams needs to keep stroking their ego but why keep doing it on a forum about drivers and driving? Fair enough the driving threads can be interesting straw hauling and the like! But most of us don’t need reminding that you can keep our shopping cold
Always thought Phish were rubbish, much preferred the Grateful Dead and at least they sung about Truckin!!

I have no idea of what your talking about, why does everyone jump to conclusions, I answered a thread about refrigeration? Should I not answer it or something?

You could do worse than carry one of these…they keep out Rusky nerve agent apparently,I daresay new canisters can be obtained…and no,I’m not taking the pee surplusandoutdoors.com/briti … 77649.html

if your going to do it,then go for the full spec model.
It sounds like the op is collecting old fridges and freezers for scrap…so theyre just chucked in the back of the lorry without a care in the world…well theyre going to the recyclers anyway…so i would assume that whatever their filled with has leaked…refrigerant maybe…lol…and once the doors were opened there was a smell…how it stayed up your nose for 3 days is anyones business…but as has been said…its harmless…wont kill ya, but possibly leaves a nasty taste in the mouth…crack on…if your earning a living and gaining experience.

Sorry but this is bull[zb], the way it works is that if everyone becomes paranoid every time someone mentions a fridge new members will be chased away, sure a few people will get great pleasure from chasing off new members who they second guess (sometimes rightly sometimes wrongly) to be trolls but that’s hardly beneficial to a good discussion forum.
Most of us want to get rid of the perpetual trolls who seek to disrupt the forums or post simply to big themselves up, but we’ve learned from recent experience that within a very short time some trolls cannot help but make it abundantly clear that they are trolling, until then sometimes it’s better to give new members the benefit of the doubt for a short while so as not to throw the baby out with the bath water (for want of a better expression).
Sorry but it seems that with a few people a desire to attack other members, whether they’re trolling or not, sometimes reigns over common sense and a desire to have free open and reasonably sensible discussion on Trucknet-UK.
I appreciate that not everyone will agree with this but it is my opinion to which I’m entitled, at-least until I’m daft enough to make a post mentioning a fridge apparently

I think you are spot on with this, I was gobsmacked at how everyone even an admin jumped allover this and immediately I was to blame for this post. As you say, common sense should prevail in order to have a proper and open discussion on this subject.
