Ameys--anyone there?

Muckaway:
What pit replaced Dorchester, Sutton Courtenay?

Hi Nathan . The Dorchester pit (oxon) was replaced by Queenford (berinsfield) when it was worked out.

Did Queensford have a new plant then Ivor or did they dumper it across the road? I can vaguely remember some tipping going on at Wally Corner…

I do remember you, Paul how are you? I take it you heard about Steve? Awful to have that happen right at the end of his career. There’s a thread on it on the Prof Drivers’ Forum (search for Cyclist killed in Oxford) it’d be good to have your input as you worked for him.
Len’s ok still on Kidlington I’ll give him your regards on Monday. I’m in Gill Mill on the loading shovel at the moment. I moved over to help out on a
trial and I’m stuck with it for now but with new motors coming there could be an opening. I’ve put some photos of Kidlington on the Smith and Sons thread.

Talking ARC, Hansons’ are really quiet at Sutton Courtenay; Dad does Blackthorn premix out of there now and he said about 8 tippers were stood for most of Wednesday.

Hi Nathan, Yes Queenford was a new plant and conveyor fed and was not generally fed with dumper but any inaccesable areas would at times would be dumpered to the plant, i was not based there but the Premix plant was one of my charges to visit.

Hi Mixer, There were never many coloured lads when i was with aggregates and one we knew as Lee was a regular at feeding our Horspath Premix plant 4w comet but from Stanton (dix).and fits your description --a real nice guy ! must be him.

Hi toshboy that will be him,he and my dad were good frieds. I havnt seen colvin 4 years now, the last time i did he was coming out of horspath in a new leyland demonstrator 4 weeler, it was around the time b m w moved in at cowley coz i was coming out of b m w plant with the mixer, i should imagine he,s retired now?

Hi Toshboy,

Did Colvin have a ERF E series 6 wheeler around F reg I think ?

Evening gents;
Colvin Lee finished up with an ERF 6wheeler, a E8 or something, on an F reg. I didn’t know him personally but when I started driving he’s always flash his lights. AW Cleaver had a franchised one slightly newer just like his, Herbie used to drive it.
Anyone remember the 2 ODs who ran Volvo FL7 6wheel tippers, they had P.Moss and P.Mulligan on the doors? WJ Wyatt of Standlake bought both of them and the last one was only retired about 3 years ago…very worn out, Mick Hayes (ex Sands and Gravels) used to drive it.

Hi toshboy, muckaway do you know the name of the pit out on the henley road from wallingford on the left hand side? they used to do as dug ballast, hoggin all very flinty.
I remember one day with my dad he went there on a job running with Bob Parry he was a company driver on a leyland bison, low sides long wheel base my dad was on his second day on his new truck a scammell routeman dont remember reg but it was an S reg he used to hate going there coz he said it cut the tyres to pieces running on the flint. They used to load you there with a drag line, or they did the day i was there.
Paul

There was a hoggin pit near Benson, when I worked for Sheehans they were putting an inert cap on top of the old landfill there and it was called Brightwell Baldwin. The tip waste kept being ploughed up hence why a layer of muck was levelled over it. There were also ballast only pits at Eynsham (the old bomb store on the Stanton Harcourt Road near the old railway station) and another along the Church Hanborough Road (New Wintles and City Farm pits) that McKennas backfilled.
There was another at Hardwick called Brasenose which was between Smiths Concrete and Kingston Minerals.

Just remembered, out towards Henley from Wallingford might be Oakley Wood, near the Ewelme turn? Landfill full now just a recycling centre there.
Grundons had a gravel pit at Ewelme, always amazed me how tjere was gravel way up that hill.
Anyone remember when Dixs’ at Stanton was dug, a lot of ww2 bombs were found as it used to be Raf Stanton Harcourt?
For anyone interested google Raf Stanton, some great stuff on how it was turned to a gravel pit. Talking of which there used to be an asphalt plant there on the old airfield perimeter pre quarrying.

Hi Mixer, Yes that def was Oakley Wood .Pit manager was a chap name of Holloway IIRC ,terrible flint for concrete making though .done trial mix once which ended up as my garden path –

I don’t know where it’s gone but I posted earlier that I’d heard Sutton Courtenay is to close. This is true, confirmed by several people today (Smiths Concrete have been emailed). Men there on a months notice, gravel plant to be mothballed, asphalt plant to be demolished and replaced with…the Tytherington plant.
Kidlington railhead will stay open and gravel to be sourced from Coln (Lechlade). This wont last as Coln is almost finished.

Tytherington quarry, asphalt plant and concrete plant to close also.
