Was that Scammell pic taken in Reading? I noticed JB in the reg, old Berkshire number and I’d guess from the hideous buildings in Reading they were built in the era of that lorry.
Must be from round Reading area somewhere - its got Beedon Haulage on it just above the step.
Steve
I thought it said Beedon but wasn’t sure so I took a guess from the JB, and the fact so many old houses in the background were being knocked down, it reminded me of the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke where they’ve reconstructed how the town used to look like before the war and before prefabs invaded. It’s also got a good Thorneycroft exhibition…
Apparently the picture was taken in Swindon and the building being demolished is the former Great Western Railway hospital.

Hello, heres another gem from Toshboy, hope the driver was ok
Cheers Bubbs,
We had one happen like that Marc, near here with a Sed/Atki six wheeler mixer belonging to Nash Rocks, the drum saved the cab from being crushed, same as that one.
Cheers Dave.

OK, thats enough now, isn’t it past your bed time! On the subject of Smiths Muckaway, do you know/remember a mate of mine who was on there for a few years called Gary Edwards?
Regards Chris
Yes I do, bloody good careful driver who always kept his wagon spotless. He never broke the speed limit either, was one of the easiest people to work with.

I thought the GWR Hospital still stands in the Railway Village, unless they replaced it with a later building? There’s certainly a building there which says GWR MEDICAL FUND on it but I think it’s a community centre now.
Yes Gary is like that at everything, steady & cautious, never 1 to jump into anything, it all had to be just right & immaculate! We grew up next door to each other, I kept trying to get him to go for his Class 1, but he was a home bird & never liked the idea of clearing off for however long & not really knowing when you’d be back, thats fine though cos each to his own!

Looks like a Leyland, from the lettering.I think the name is too long for Albion, the Dodge had flatter front than the other two.
Cheers Dave.
This was a lucky escape for the driver, one of the first Premix o/ds-he was unhurt and able to get stuck in and help get 6 cu yds of concrete out of the drum assisted by the Fire brigade who high pressure force pumped water and cleared most of it, unassisted by todays jobsworths of H&S ! he was back on the road within a month after chassis re-alignment etc,i believe it was a super comet. toshboy

Stanfields’ pics of Chipping Sodbury wagons brings back memories; I used to go with Dad down there during school holidays when Smiths were quiet to pick up Type 1 for stock. I’ve been down there a handfull of times as a driver but Smiths changed to RMC Roadstone/Cemex for their Carb-stone several years ago so I stopped going down there.
With Dad, I could never get over the size of the crushing plant and the fact that 2 of those big Cat dumpers could tip into it while a third (the backup was a Terex) waited for the hopper to part empty before tipping. I always remember FG Bonds 4 wheel ERFS (E/ES6s’?) being polished whenever there was a wait at the coating plant.
The Scammell tanker; I’m sure that ended up at Sodbury as a bowser? I remember seeing one somewhere…ARCs used to have ex army Bedfords as explosive wagons down there aswell…
Hi Nathan
A little more up to date info for you…
Now Komatsu dumpers (Jap crap…), about 60 tonnes capacity tipping into a 600 tonne an hour crusher… Coating plant ‘mothballed’ because of building downturn, probably never to re-open. 40 years old but better than most of the new ones…one of the last of the Stothert and Pitt plants…
I can’t ever remember a Scammell bowser but I may be wrong. I do remember a Foden Haulmaster with knackered power steering - they put the tank right on the back and it was fine when it was full…
All the ex-army stuff has gone now, elfing safety saw them off because you had to use the wheel ring to get in the cab and there was a risk of slipping! Bloody nonsense
Many congrats to you and the good lady on the new addition to the fleet, make sure you enjoy the formative years as much as possible because it won’t be long and he will be as big and ugly as the rest of us!
No driving the pram on the grass either…
Hello Piston Broke
If I remember rightly, the Scammel tanker was driven by Jimmy Bateman & I never recall it becoming a Bowser either. One thing that has tripped my memory from those Sodbury lorry photos is the ERF 8 wheeler, I only ever remember there being one of those on the fleet & it was driven from new by Keith Hooper, Trouble is I thought it was a K reg but the one in the photos is an M reg. I’ll have to email Skinny & ask him.

Don’t think it would be a super comet being a 6 legger double drive, the normal 6 legger lightweight chassis for mixer operation, particuarly with the LAD cab was the Bear.

Basil, you sly old fox…
Obviously you have the advantage of a few more years than me to remember these things…
I can only think that that ERF that Keith had new never went too fast then, nor did a full days work! Nice bloke but Jeez, he was tired!
Give Skinny my regards please? I haven’t seen him for about 18 months when he was up here knocking around with a bird…
Ask him if he can remember the words to Blue Velvet? I seem to recall him breaking into song at most opportunities…
