Hello, heres another gem from Toshboy, hope the driver was ok

Cheers Bubbs,

I thought it was an LAD cab of some description…

Looks like a Leyland, from the lettering.I think the name is too long for Albion, the Dodge had flatter front than the other two.
Cheers Dave.

This was a lucky escape for the driver, one of the first Premix o/ds-he was unhurt and able to get stuck in and help get 6 cu yds of concrete out of the drum assisted by the Fire brigade who high pressure force pumped water and cleared most of it, unassisted by todays jobsworths of H&S ! he was back on the road within a month after chassis re-alignment etc,i believe it was a super comet. toshboy

Don’t think it would be a super comet being a 6 legger double drive, the normal 6 legger lightweight chassis for mixer operation, particuarly with the LAD cab was the Bear.

What were you trying to post, Toshboy? It gets a pain when a quote is requoted and so on, I leave out quoting in these instances (or quote the original posting)

There was an L A D cabbed Leyland Retriever with a 600 engine offered as a mixer chassis.

The Retriever–sounds familiar ,was this the model with a transfer power divider box and propshaft to each axle? if so this was probably the one. . toshboy

The Bear had the transfer box and twin propshafts, here’s an article on them,

Thanks for that interesting link. cannot really identify the truck in question though we knew them as Super Comets ,the name Bear never mentioned ,come to think back though i cannot remember any of them being badged,i’m sure they were 20 ton at that time (around 66/67) i note there were 2 wheelbases and can remember problems in obtaining propshafts being of a shorter length -we had to cut and shorten them from the tipper version, these were of the single prop drive, so that rules out the retriever drive train model.i am sure the engines were 401s , knowing Amey Group they probably specified hybrids !! the link shows that there was a Super Comet 20 ,perhaps i’ll settle for that.–toshboy

Leyland Bear of C W Griffiths in1973 parked at their Dolyhir garage. If you zoom the pic to 400%,you will see the badge saying Bear on the nearside of the grill.
Cheers Dave.

I remember that The Bear was produced for those operator’s of mixer’s and tipper’s who felt that the large Ergomatic cab was too fragile for that work, the same as Foden continuing with the S39 cab on mixer’s when their main cab would have been the more vulnerable S80. Weight also came into it with both vehicles, the older cab’s were a lot lighter.

Pete.

In that respect, Daf should’ve facelifted the Foden 4000 for tipper operators to save weight.
I’ve remembered another Amey pit; Whitehill on the A40 at the Widford turn near Burford. Smiths own it now, but it was originally run by Haines’ of Witney. It’s not been open as such for about 20 years but I went in there with Dad loading brash for the construction of Witan Way in Witney, around 1987. This was the section near the then under demolition, Mount Mill, now Sainsburys.

Seeing that pic reminded me of an OD from the Lechlade area who ran an A reg F6 4wheeler until recently. It had a green cab and ran out of Coln and Horcott. There was also a small operator who ran some Volvo FLs on E regs until a short time ago also from Lechlade area. Had red stripe across cab I think they were Derek West?

There was a Derek West from Kempsford, who ran out of Ameys for years. Haven’t seen anything of his for a long time, Derek would be getting on a bit now if he’s still about, he had a son who maybe still running.

That’s him, his lorries never seemed to age. He had an FL artic aswell I think and I’m sure he was one of the first to have the automatic side to side sheets on his lorries.

Hello,Toshboy asked me to pop this on here

Cheers Bubbs,

HI Bubbleman
It was brilliant to see this old girl again.
122 ERO was the vehicle that many years ago as a 21yr old I learnt to drive HGV’s on, Bob Blowing was the regular driver and I was the mate She was 22.5 tons empty and would carry 45 tons which wasn’t bad for the late sixties early seventies. We also had a steering dolly which enabled us to carry long loads like concrete beams for example.
