Alternative careers?

In the current economic climate and me being a nosey git, I was just wondering how many members on here have moved on to other types of job and what sort of work people are going to instead of trucking

Hmmm, one time there were several jobs I could have gone back to, like Builder, Dumper driver, off road forklift-driver etc. I can’t do any of those now, on a site, as you need bloody ponsy cards, CS?? something or other. :imp: Yeah Health and Safety, well they had that back when I was doing it, but with no ponsy cards

i’ve become a leather settee comfort tester, and if i fancy some overtime i test the range of the tv remote !

im currently moving into an au-pair role indoors

im body piercing in between agency shifts. cant stand all the chavs that come in tho. looking at doing adr to try and widen my prospects.

Well i have just done a test for a c.s.c.s. card so i can go to building sites and i have just finished a 5 day course for my sia licence so i can do Security work am looking into doing flt soon. Doing courses is the only thing keeping me sane at the moment. Every thing i have gone for lately they never phone you back. :frowning:

Glad you brought that up.I have put several jobs i found in the Farmers weekly magazine.Positions such as farm managers/combine and tractor drivers etc,in the UK and overseas, some with 3 bed cottage/house or mobile home offered.Someone said my posts were ridicolous and silly, apparently.

I will just say from where i’m sitting peter mill, the jobs you post up, although sometimes can be slightly abstract, not in a bad way though :exclamation: and if I was a little older and had more driving behind me [for the driving positions] I would have no hesitation to apply for them but I’d be at the bottom of an ever increasing pile of applications if I did apply. So please carry on posting roles which you see/know of, and if people are moaning about the content of said postings, they should grow up and not put down a guy for trying to offer leads to other folk.

politics!

im NOT joking

i could become,
a vosa officer, “corrupt of course”.
a corrupt politition, as that is a requirement.
a male prostitute, but the wife won’t let me.
a traffic commisioner, but i’m too inteligent.
a senior manager at morrisons, so i can sack the lot of those jobsworth tossers.
a missionary in the mountains of Afghanistan. that’ll teach bin laden that phils the daddy.

Sod it i’ll just keep driving.

Bus driving, cant find a class 2 job for love nor money round here :imp:
Its doing my head in, some woman went off on one today because I couldnt give her 10p change and expected me to get some money changed up just for her and wanted it before I went for a ■■■■ - err no!!!

Taxi driving currently since Janury 03 this year as no class 1 work within a 40 mile radius so frankly to me it’s not worth driving 80+ miles per day round trip for £7.50-£8.50 per hour. Taxi work entertaining but not for me long term. Looking forward to things improving in the haulage industry so I can return to a nice big wagon!

wen r firm r quiet and they lay a few drivers off for the day or 2, i always go back on the spanners for the days that r quiet, still got about 5 grand of tools in out garage that i keep covered up until i use them, its good in a way because i can usually get a full weeks work even when its quiet

Those tour/holiday company websites being refered to,seem to remember 2 jobs there, one with “Nomadic” as a guide/pcv/hgv2 driver in Summer season in Morroco, and t`other with “Hot rock” or similar naming company for hgv2/pcv for long trip from India to Singapore. Those 2 positions i saw on “Rapido” job website too.Lord Toby.MBE.OBE.MRCVS.BA.MA.hons.

I registered as an interpreter/translator. Much better money, paid from the moment I am living my doorstep to the moment I am back on my coach, mileage paid and up to 17.50 per hour BASIC (self employed).

Downsides: You have to deal with that part of Polish emmigration you won’t like to meet here (to be honets, I would not be happy to meet them in Poland as well… If someone lives here 5 years and did not made a single effort to learn English, like my last client, it says everything about what kind of people they are). Also, they expect me to be not only the intepreter, but also advisor, advocate, ATM machine etc… And it’s boring while at the same time it’s a big responsibility. I told my agencies, that I am still happy to drive for them from time to time, as it’s much more enjoyable… Today I was doing Co-ops arround Dunbar - what the lovely countryside.

I’m back bus driving whilst at the same time studying for my IT qualifications…should complete the exams about the same time as the economy starts to pick up again.

And for all the doom and gloom merchants who say there is no IT jobs…there are twice as many IT vacancies down here as there are driving jobs
