Anyone any info on the aircraft refuelling. applied threw Monarch last year for Northern Ireland airports and have had a few emails to say i am on the system and when a role becomes available they will be in contact. just wanting to know what the work is like and rates of pay. any info would be great…
Used to work out of Belfast city. Got to know the refuellers quite well and had some good banter with them. They liked it but that said their pay underwent bad times during a takeover. They were with Air BP when I was there but that was some years ago. Seemed like dead mans shoes kind of job in Belfast city airport. All bowsers as no ground based fuel system. They’d come to us in flight deck, have some banter, get the figure, go outside and set it up. Then we’d sign the paperwork and chat some more and they’d head back the 200 feet to the small base where the lorries were kept. All the local crews knew the refuellers and tug drivers.
Bit different at large airports. No one knows anyone. Mechanic/ground engineer liaises with refueler and sets up fuel panel on large aircraft and balances the tanks.

Anyone ever done this ?
My nephew has got an interview with Monarch Refuelling , he asked me if i know anyone who has done it before and whats involved .
I’ve never done anything like that so thought i’d ask on here .
Are you sure it doesn’t involve re-fuelling one’s truck?
I worked at Gatwick airport for Monarch Personnal for 11 months. The work it’s self was very enjoyable but there was the normal trouble you would expect with agency.
I was on £12 an hour there and the monarch Personnal guys were the lowest paid at Gatwick. I had a contract that gave me a 162 months. This would be on a shift pattern of weird and wonderful hours. Basically they use you to ‘gap fill’ covering core staff sickness and holiday. As time went on to the quieter months I was still getting paid for 162 hours a month. Great you might think but when your only getting a weeks work these hours are ‘banked’ so basically if you want to work over on the rate £16 an hour you can’t as you still owe them the basic banked hours. So say I would go in to December oweing them 80 hours plus the full 162 from the next month. In truth your never get out of the banked hours and you can kiss the over time rate goodbye.
I was lucky because at Gatwick, due to high turn over of staff if you leave within a year you will owe monarch personal £1500 if you leave or want to leave. Apparently this money is for the training and uniform. Yet you need to be trained to do this job and you don’t get to keep the uniform , not that you would want to covered in fuel.
I have to say that if an agency guys does the smallest of things wrong you will be in for a severe bolloxin. Disaplinary hearings and so on. The core guys just get a gentle talking too. But they will drag this out for weeks until someone can come down from head office to fill out mountings of paper work against you for your file.
Pay was often short. Some months I would work a full 162 hours and be £600 short. We use to laugh at this as some poor sod would be short the next. It’s like they didn’t have enough cash to pay everyone at once and someone would more or less take it turns to go short.
Again the job is good but gets very boring. You stand there just waiting for the plane to fill up whilst management secretly spy on you for some distance away to see what they can pull you up on next.
When I came to leave Craig steed the director tried to take me to court for outstanding work hours owed. Needless tho say I didn owe him a signed thing. As periously mentioned I got trained but the training is useless in any other job as I didn’t even have an ADR out of it and he had all his PPE back, he still tried it on though.
If you go here I would do so with an air of caution. Always keep an eye on your back as someone is always ready to put the knife in. From North air themselves or the monarch personal. If I was offered another job I wouldn’t go back as they are crooks. Due to not being on a taco you can expect 9 hour gaps between shifts and used and abused. It’s a real shame this lot have the monopoly on the refuelling game as they are crap to deal with and work for.
I was offered a tanker job in purfleet for hall fuels through monarch personnel. But im not sure about This as craig is The Guy i spoke to And is arranging everything hmm

Try City airport? Always looking for drivers though so not a great sign either…but not far to go!
