Anyone ever done this ?
My nephew has got an interview with Monarch Refuelling , he asked me if i know anyone who has done it before and whats involved .
I’ve never done anything like that so thought i’d ask on here .
Very easy work (or it used to be)
Way it was in the RAF
Start work do standard vehicle checks, drain some fuel check for excess water or “other” substances (fungus etc)
Hook hoses onto tanker and flush about 500 gallon through to clear hoses and stir the fuel about a bit in the tank check for leaks etc.
Once you are out refuelling and aircraft:
Most large aircraft normally have a platform connected to the wings or refuelling point.
Pull up connect earth lead.
Connect hoses to platform.
Aircraft techies work out how much fuel required (normally to do with take off weight) and normally sit on board switching tanks etc.
They tend to talk in pounds, kilo’s and tons you talk in gallons and litres.
Once you get the signal to start pumping your away.
Pump until it’s full or the techie stops the flow from his end.
Disconect and store hoses remove earth lead.
Any paperwork to be signed etc get techie to do it.
Move to next aircraft as required.
If you’ve no paperwork to sign leave refuelling log blank.
Go to Bulk Fuel Installation
Fill tanker back up deduct whatever you put in from your tank capacity and log that against aircraft.
I.e your tanker hold 7500 Gallons you lift 3500 thats what you gave the aircraft.
Some airfields don’t even need you to do that now.
I was in Ascension and they had Leyland Roadrunners
Plugged one hose it the ground fuelling point and one into the platform and away they went.
Simply recorded the reading from the gauge and back to the section straight after.
If he arrives at the interview and already knows the rules to uckers he’ll be ok
If not it’s easy enough to learn.
my dad who was on fuel tank for 40 yaers took a job on east mids airport in mid 90,s refueling planes think he lasted 3 months wasnt a bad job was just bored out of his skull
Only done it in a Blackburn Buccaneer flying for HM off The Ark in the 1970,s
Yes I have done aircraft refueling but only for the MOD something similar to the guy that worked for the RAF but we carried a max of 9500 gals and we also did defuels calibrations and hotpits.
When I drove petrol tankers in London I knew a guy that worked for Ultramar that went to work on refueling at Heathrow.
At the time the pay on petrol tankers was excellent but at the airport it was even better.(shift work)
As far as I know the money is still well above average but as someone said it can get boring after a while but then so does driving up and down a motorway.
Each to their own but I would recommend it rather than most driving jobs.

I heard today Monarch hire drivers through an agency and if that is true maybe that is the reason the pay is not so good.

Hi all Im a Newbie on here .First Post.
Just thought I would try and ask about this Job as it seems there is some useful Info on the Forum.
I am ex Mil, and done a Bit of Trucking Drawbar a Few Years ago in Civvy Str, and haven’t driven much big stuff since 2007 .
Any way I have my Class 1 and don’t have much Artic experience at all but willing to do some refresher Training also ADR.
I am in Edinburgh but was wondering if any one has done this Job and what sort of training do Monarch put you through for this type of Role ?
Any info appreciated , as I done a bit of this Fuelling Work whilst serving in The RAF Regiment .
Any information would be much appreciated as I am going to apply after New Year .
Thanks in advance.
To: 4270wilso,
Looks like the ADR is a pre-requisite, so there’s your starting point to get your foot in the door…after that-go for it!!! There will be a degree of ‘on the job training’ or site inductions or both as all tanker jobs vary regarding tankers/equipment/loading procedures/site safety etc.
Leeds/Bradford Airport Refuelling £9.75 per hour for ALL shifts with some overtime available.
Crap rates for ADR surely?
Although normal Class1 is being offered up in my part of the world at as little as £7.50 an hour, and someone is taking those jobs!
My dad worked for shell at Manchester for meny years was very good job back then easy work have to remember its a 24/7 op so Christmas Day and bank holis if your rostered to work you work
Cheers Guys for prompt replies .
Yeh gonna go for ADR Class 111 Tanks again .
Oh how I hate that course ,very boring indeed Classroom work for a Week. Arrrgh .
Thanks again Guys, Im liking this Forum .
I’ve refuelled a Cessna 206 from a jerrycan with a funnel and leather. At night.
Oh…you’re talking slightly bigger…
Just a small point, there is very little bowser or tanker work on civil airports. Basically you drive a meter and pump vehicle, pull up to aircraft, connect earths, plug hose in the ground to the fuel pipeline, other end in the aircraft and pump poundage required. See flight captain in for payment by card.
This is how Stansted operates, All major airports are on the national fuel pipline grid, Stansteds fuel depot , if you can call it that, is a huge pipe fed reservoir at Saffron Walden.
