[Agency] Update on how's the look of work landscape

dozy:

Winseer:
I’ve always had the work ethic that:-

“If the pay is good enough, I’ll do whatever job is asked of me to remain in top pecking order to carry on working there”.

A simple example question on that note would be:-

“Would you for £30 an hour - clean the toilets, if you were told sorry bud, you don’t have a run tonight”.

OR… Would you rather be sent home, and likely cancelled the rest of the week for “not being flexible enough”?

I had that years ago if you pick the litter up/ weed / clean the windows in the yard , we will sign you up for your 10 hrs and you can go home early , if you won’t do any of those things you can sit in the canteen until you’ve done your 10 hrs , I told them [zb] if I wanted a job picking up rubbish I’d get a bin mans job for the council
Made me sit there day after day while the spineless [zb] went out picking up rubbish , [zb]
As for cleaning toilets , never , mrs does it , I paint the walls , cut the grass , wash the cars

You left out the “After being sent home early, that’ll be it - you’ll never be asked back here.

How is it? No Christmas’ build-up yet? Agencies quiet?

How is it? No Christmas’ build-up yet? Agencies quiet?

My phone rang…

Last week. It was an agency I did two shifts for over 3 years ago.

‘Hi, how’s my star driver then?’

‘I dunno, let me know when you’ve rung him’.

‘The reason I’ve called is because we’re looking really busy for the next three months and we’d like to know that you’re available to cover for lot’s of shifts paying top money?’

‘I’m gonna put the phone down now’.

Because the industry is quickly turning into a final miles peripheral activity of the warehousing/logistics sector.
Every 400 truck miles transferred from road to rail = 10 hours work ( call it a shift ) lost for the truck driver. Checkout how the rail freight industry is ■■■■■■■■ about how many truck miles it supposedly won’t be able to take from road because of the cancellation of the Northern section HS2.
Bearing in mind the big fanfare made by the big supermarkets as to how many truck miles they’ve already taken off the road.

Apart from the 12 hours maximum shift, that sounds like my job… :grimacing:

I’m just as out of touch with the driver’s mood as this conversation is off-topic

On the other hand, seems that some of you got a good grasp of my idiosyncracy as a driver, I do relate to those comments and phone chat transcript

In fairness, even the agency wouldn’t be desperate enough to ring up Carryfast.

I dont think that there will be much of a Christmas rush in future. Like lots of others I dont bother with sending cards, Bah Humbug. So much of what was R.M. work is now done by the white van people.

Bonus points days 4 on 4 off no London runs Scotch and night out once or twice per week.
This topic is officially declared a warehouse to wheels and rail freight free zone

An agency offered me a shift for Oakland in Corby at 12.2 GBP/hour flat rate (both AM and PMs) Monday to Friday pay.

That used to be Corby Chilled Distribution site. I set foot on that site back in 2005 and got paid 20 GBP/hour for a Sunday

Oakland get the calibre of driver that they so richly deserve. I’ve rarely come across a whole company who’s vehicles are driven by incompetent, clueless and downright shocking drivers.

Is there work out there? Simply put, without geopolitcs ramifications nor macro-economy analysis

I begin to get texts and calls from agencies asking me for jobs I do not do, but it is getting closer… feels it is gaining momentum.

I do not know the reason why nobody says anything on such relevant topic:

  1. Everyone too busy to post

  2. Forum derailling from what a driver’s forum is admittedly meant to be for

  3. So little work that everyone’s avoiding losing an edge by giving up information to an avid community lurking in silence

I live in North East Manchester and have found this year very quiet.
Been with the same agency for four years mostly working in Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton areas.
Had to change agencies as I was only getting 3 to 4 shifts a week even in September unlike previous years when it was 5 to 6. My main concern was Jan-Mar 24 as that period this year was dire, 1 or 2 shifts per week only!
I’ve taken a winter contract Oct-April(ish) 4on 2off delivering Propane in a rigid tanker to homes and businesses. It’s a 24/7 365 operation.
At 55 yo it’s hard graft compared to trunking for parcel companies that I’ve been doing for the last four years. Fortunately my shift pattern gives me 24th and 25th Dec off and NYE but I’ll be in bed at 21:00!

I had to do something as I estimated my annual income would be £10k down on last year and that was £5k less than the year before.

…The firms that can only afford to pay £12ph - go ■■■■-up next, either getting taken over, and their drivers being the main prize gained - or just left to fail, their drivers either going onto an agency’s books just ahead of a recession - or deciding to hang up their keys, as they are over 65 by this point…

As for how “quiet” it is… It’s been quite this past week - so far.
That measure of yours “too busy to post” - seems a good one.
