[Agency] Update on how's the look of work landscape

I am all ears

Any feeling of a Christmas’ build-up emergence?

Early days , if you are looking find out which agency does Royal Mail in your area.

Thanks for the ‘early days’ clue.

Royal Mail used to demand drivers their cages pulled in and out of the wagon. Still so? Last time to my recollection was in 2015, I kind of suspect that didn’t change, please surprise me

I did some R.M. work about 2012, just on 7.5.tonners. Well paid easy work but very badly managed. It was only 12 cages so no real hardship there.

Really? is there a problem pulling cages?

Sadly for a lot of drivers, yes there is. Anything other than sitting behind the wheel is seen as some heinous crime that shouldn’t ever be asked of a driver.

Cages…

Are alright if you know what you’re doing.

They’re not alright if the floor of the lorry is like a ploughed field, the cages are loaded top heavy and some numbnuts has put the drops on in the wrong order. Then you start questioning why you took your class 1 in the first place.

The only other memorable tale about cages is when City Link were running. A good mate of mine had a huge row with them when he refused to pull cages at the hub on his break.

Unbelievable whingeing about shifting some cages. As opposed to tipping and loading a loose loaded trailer all handball floor to ceiling each shift.

The thread obviously a wind-up, I mean rolling RM yorks is about the easiest work going and I don’t think class 1 get involved in it to be honest, it is just the delivery office runs.

Courier warehouses are quite high-tech these days and the large conveyors actually go inside the trailers while warehouse staff throw the boxes on. Actually very quick and much weight saved by not transporting cages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmDfFogJjEA

Yeah, yeah yeah. We all know you are a workshy bore … change the record.

A wall of loose loaded freight is a wall and handball means what it says.Regardless of the conveyor which just gets it to and from the wall quicker.
Substitute 53ft with 45ft and the laughable ‘unloader package handler’ ‘warehouse staff’ job description with driver forced under union agreement to unload and load during a hub sort you get the picture.

All those going on about what’s wrong with cages want to go upto Goole & do 2x double deckers , 1 single deck of beer , cans , pallets of beer etc etc , 200 odd cages !! In a shift , I’ve done it often in the past & it’s bloody hard work , add in dock levellers you can’t get level & it’s a bloody nightmare ( though I’m getting on & not in best of health )
Getting back on the original question , agency complaining they can’t get the hours or extra shifts , hours are a bit up & down , more up in my case , extra shift no idea , I get contract enforced on o/t , so maybe it costs too much or they ■■■■ office off by dragging ■■■ out job

I’ve always had the work ethic that:-

“If the pay is good enough, I’ll do whatever job is asked of me to remain in top pecking order to carry on working there”.

A simple example question on that note would be:-

“Would you for £30 an hour - clean the toilets, if you were told sorry bud, you don’t have a run tonight”.

OR… Would you rather be sent home, and likely cancelled the rest of the week for “not being flexible enough”?

Sounds to me a “work ethics” of not much elevated principles, it rather reminds me of the morals of a ■■■■■ or a mercenary e.g.

I registered for two agencies and didn’t hear from them, they said we would discuss placements…
Are they luring me in order to mischievously acquire and sell my personal and banking details to The malign?

Last time I looked, we agency folk were not commonly referred to as “Work-Ethicked-Steering Wheel Attendents”, but rather more often by the label you’ve provided above, that has an attachment of honour about it these days… :stuck_out_tongue: :grimacing:

(Unless you’re an actual one-of-the-above, in which case you see the illogical stance of them protesting in favour of a regime that would surely stone her to death on sight, should she ever venture over to that part of the world…)

I had that years ago if you pick the litter up/ weed / clean the windows in the yard , we will sign you up for your 10 hrs and you can go home early , if you won’t do any of those things you can sit in the canteen until you’ve done your 10 hrs , I told them ■■■■■ if I wanted a job picking up rubbish I’d get a bin mans job for the council
Made me sit there day after day while the spineless ■■■■■■■■ went out picking up rubbish , ■■■■■■■■■■
As for cleaning toilets , never , mrs does it , I paint the walls , cut the grass , wash the cars

Recruitment agencies and transport offices seem to me like a sump filled with school drop-outs and maladjusted egos

Yet others prepared to do the work that has always been part of lorry driving, eg moving cages (paid exercise) are finding shifts, could there be a theme developing here, just wondered.

Fine so long as it stops at moving cages as a minimal necessary part of the job.
But it’s obvious that many employers actually see the ‘lorry driving’ as just a peripheral activity not the core job.
In which case be honest call it what it is warehouse operative/driver in that order.
Others prepared to do the work given that job description then fine that’s their choice.
