MTN464E, Don Jonhston [RIP],got this one brand new at Shorties, Regards Larry.

I drove this AEC dump truck on some of the McAlpines contracts up and down the country. It was a company called Hobsons Of Eggbourgh plant hire. The trucks were ultra reliable. The problems came when we came to move them on the main road and they were not taxed so in a convoy of 12 trucks the front one had a trade plate on and the back one had one but the rest didn’t have anything. They were all registered and on some jobs they were taxed because we had to run them on public roads.

Ive spotted what looks like a Mercury ergo unit in Blockleys yard at the side of the Driglington by pass ,the reason i say looks like is because it has the larger (hub reduction?) axle and the diesel tank isnt AEC, odd shaped thing not the usual rounded 1 so it could be Leyland ,anyway it looks like its being restored

Hi Ramone, it could be a Mercury as suggested , some of them had an oblong tank with rounded corners on the ends.

Hi LB,
The tank looks familiar but i`d say it looks like its from a Leyland or Albion its on the off side

Hiya …someone asked if a volvo 4 wheeler changed the british lorry industry i would have thought if AEC would have made the MK5
a standard 4 wheeler they would have sold like hot cakes…PLP looks a well smart machine.

i dont think so it was new to the TRRL at Crowthorne then went up to Birmingham and was sold firstly to Mike Wells who did nothing with it , then it was parked on a farm in Essex for a couple of years and i dont know what happened to Mike anyway i got to hear about it from Graham Edge and went down to |Southminster to have a “recce” never thinking of buying it as we feared it would be a hope less case, but when we got to the farm where it was being stored and saw what good condition it was in we bought it there and then and i was all for driving it back home but i thought twice as we had gone down in a lowloader and decided to load it up and haul it back , i went for a drive in the AEC which had not been started up for a couple of years and in true AEC fashion it started first time,so we put it on the trailer and came away with it on the way back we went round via Turners yard where Graham was working at the time to let him (Graham) have a look at it and it caused quite a stir

it was given more than a paint job and when people can comment on things they know nothing about it amazes me. ramone, seeing that and after hearing what someone has been saying about this lorry i will get cracking on that promised picture show. poor old Ron is dead so i will have to put the story straight for him.
