Larry, that AEC MK5 would have been a top motor in it’s day,did it have the 6-speed box and the AV690 though?

It had the AV. 690. But only the 5 speed box. 37 mph, but it was a good puller, they werent too far behind the faster ones overall. Regards Larry.

They were a lot behind the later MK5s with the 2AV690 and 6-speed box Larry, right at the end of MK5 production in 1965.I had one and I was loath to part with it and go onto a Mandator artic - about 1970. I only moved uppards for the money which I was always after.

My dad always said the same Chris he had a `59 mkv with a 9.6 and 5 speed box he said it was ok until they put a trailer behind it,but he said the 11.3 with the 6 speed box were like chalk n cheese, mind i dont think the 9.6 and 5 speed was designed for trailer work ,he said it refused many a hill

You are spot on Ramone. One of the first jobs I got with Evans when I started in 1969 was to load a “brand new secondhand” ex-Shell MK5 MM,XYP 107,with a load of crude benzole out of South Yorks Chemicals near Rotherham. Five - speed box, little engine,a right pain, not as good as the old MK3 that I had.
It was “issued” to one of our Chesterfield drivers…talk about being disappointed.

I think “sniffy” put this photo on,if not apologies in advance,I just think it’s a great photo of a new MK3 outside Tillotsons. Mind you,it would have some work to do when let loose to BLT

John - Check out on the 2nd clip at about 2.15 – an AEC much like yours with a bit of steam!
hi lads, worked for thomas bell (bero flour) AEC MANDATOR 414CBB was the motor that i drove, had a 9.6 engine with a 5 speed box flat out 28mph up hill and down dale as they say, even with the draw bar trailer on, at that time it was 20mph for wagon and drag, so speed didn’t matter, aberdeen was a 4day job and inverness 5days when pulling the drag trailer, one trip when returning home from dundee it developed a bottom end knock, rang the work shop explained the symptoms of the knock and that the oil pressure was normal and plenty in the sump, bring it home was the answer, when they dropped the sump discovered the crankshaft was broken many moons later had a scania113 360 that broke its crankshaft, but it didn’t make it home, bumper
